CALMAC manufactures IceBank energy storage tanks. When IceBank tanks are added to a conventional

cooling system the storage tanks capture and store efficient half price nighttime electricity, of which a growing portion is comprised of

renewable wind energy. Here’s how…

At night the IceBank tanks are charged with a chiller using cheaper, more efficient, and cleaner night time electricity from the grid. Night time charging of ice tanks creates a load for renewable wind energy too, which blows mainly at night.

According to the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), off peak electricity is the only form of energy not to increase in price (when converted to today’s dollars) in the last 40 years.

During the day, the building is cooled in a conventional manner with electricity supplied from the grid which may contain renewable energy if available.

As the day heats up the wind may subside and clouds may fill the sky reducing the renewable energy available and creating heavy electric demand.

As the cooling and occupancy peak occurs the demand for electricity becomes very high stressing the grid. When demand goes up, so does the price. Peaking units come on to improve reliability, but they tend to be expensive and dirty.

When cooling loads are excessive, costs and demand are high, the stored cooling is used, reducing the demand of the building on the grid while lowering cooling costs for the user20 – 40%.
