Our celebrations last Friday for St Patrick’s Day were a significant occasion for the community. The students’ participation in the Mass was conducted with a high degree of reverence shown. Father Liam challenged us all to have Faith, and to demonstrate our Faith. The following ‘Great Morven Race’ generated a big buzz around the College and surrounding streets. It was a wonder-ful sight seeing nearly 250 students race past the rest of the school in four different age races. Congratulations to the following placegetters on the day:-

SHORNCLIFFE SHUFFLERS One week to go before Shore to Gate. This Sunday we will enjoy a run around the local community. Meet at 6.55am in the plaza for a 7am start. CIC boys who are not at top fitness levels must have a parent accompany them. We don’t want any

Ms Marthy Watson Campus Minister

At 6am Sunday 10 March, 21 ladies from the St Patrick’s community (staff and parents) hopped on the school bus – all dress in pink and green – to partici-pate in the RSCQ International Women’s’ Day 5 km Fun run/walk at Southbank. This is an event that supports the Mater chicks in pink. They make a real differ-ence to women with breast cancer both by providing for immediate needs of women undergoing treatment at Mater and by contributing to research at Mater Medical Research Institute to find better treatments.

Fun was had by all and the quick paced walk was toppedoff by a hearty break-fast prepared by the gentlemen (staff and husbands of the walkers) who took the Paddies Van down to Southbank. A big thank you to all the participants. We hope to double the number of entries next year. So watch this space and sign up when the call comes around.

PINK STUMPS DAY Our school supports the Jane McGrath foundation and raised $500-00 last year for breast cancer awareness with our Pink Cupcake Day held here at school. We decided to build on this tradition and our First Cricket team took up the Pink Stumps Day Challenge this

year. They played with pink hats, pink wicket keeper pads and pink stumps on Saturday 9 March against Villanova. By hosting this event, St Patrick’s has helped to make a difference to the lives of Australian fami-lies experiencing breast cancer. To date the McGrath Foundation has 81 McGrath Breast Care Nurses working in communities right across Australia who have helped support more than 19,300 Australian fami-lies experiencing breast cancer. Thank you to all that have supported this event. The raffle for the Brisbane Heat shirt signed by Alister McDermott will be drawn on Assembly next Tuesday.

PADDIES GREEN FINGERS GARDEN CLUB As we move into the colder part of the year, we would like to invite parents to join the Greenfingers Club. We meet every Thursday afternoon after school (3:15pm)in the garden. We are planting and propagating plants and already have a number of different herbs growing in pots. We are urgently looking for the following equipment. Please phone the Ministry Office (3631 9089) if you can assist. Thank you to Mr Russell Oakes who donated a small water tank and compost bin to the garden. We need: any size plastic pots or punnets to plant seedling in, any seeds (herbs and winter vegetables) are welcome watering cans and a wheelbarrow HARMONY DAY: Harmony Day celebrates peace and harmony amongst all cultural groups in our society. To celebrate we will be holding a harmony games tournament where students will be able to represent their country or cultural background in various games over two lunch times on the 26 & 27 of March. Last year the Pacific Islander team won and hopefully they will return to de-fend their title. Harmony Day Sign on - Could all students wishing to sign on for the Harmony Day games to held on 26 & 27

of March form a team and email Mr Corfield at [email protected] MINISTRY IN ACTION Meeting this Friday morning at 8:00 – 8:30 am in Waterford Meeting rooms. All welcome.

FR MODESTUS INSTALLATION The St Patrick’s College community would like to congratulate Fr Modestus on his Installation as our Parish priest. We wish him every blessing as he leads our local Catholic community over the coming years.

Marcus Reed India Immersion

In trying to describe my time in India, I could explain our itinerary and nearly four weeks of amazing activities and sights. However, on reflection I think a more effec-tive way of explaining my true experience of India might be by sharing this simple story. The following story how-ever does no justice whatsoever to express exactly how loving and caring some people are towards us. Brother Cyril is from St Joseph’s Christian Brother school in Kolkata India. He is one of the most spiritually devoted men that I have ever met. He is an amazing person and in the way that he comes across is highly humble and gener-ous of his time and patient. He has much knowledge of the world around us and brings the best out of people through his wise words and the way he structures his words. I was hanging on every word he would say and how he displayed the Indian culture to me really made me see just how beautiful and heart warming the people are. I will never forget him in the Mass that was put on at St Joseph’s by his cousin Father Cyril and sharing oneself in as many aspects as possible. Brother Cyril then extended on being rich of soul. The way he described it as learning from the uneducated and through students much younger than us and taking

in the fact that they have nothing yet they are still willing to give. By give I mean there whole hearted and individual attention so to give of themselves. That is why the India culture is so joyful, mazing and beautiful in its own way. How they have literally nothing and are so welcoming and happy is just unfathomable. It shows ones true self.

Brother Cyril is the epitome of the Indian culture in giving ones full self in rich mind and spirit. I can’t wait to go back to Kolkata and just sit and talk with him again I will cherish this perception of life for many years to come.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

At the beginning of last year the College purchased a pro-gram known as Turnitin. This program is used for the sub-mission of assignments and is quite common in a number of schools. Students are required to upload assignments into Turnitin. As a consequence the program will check to see if the work is written by the student or taken from another source. It is most important that students are submitting work which is their own and not the product of an internet site. Students using work from an internet or any other site must ensure that their work is referenced correctly. The procedure for referencing is explained in the students diary. Turnitin also allows us to archive assignments and will check the author-ship of a task against work submitted by students in previ-ous years. We believe that this is a much fairer system.

We have been using Turntin throughout the term. Students across all year levels have been required to upload work into Turntin. At times this was a bit frustrating as the uploads were not always successful. Modifications have been made and all should be well now. Please note carefully the following re-quirement. All students will be required to submit a Turntin digital receipt when handing in their hard copy. As per Col-lege policy a hard copy is still required for all assignment submissions. Hence final copies cannot be submitted through Turntin, The hard copy must match the work sub-mitted through Turntin exactly. I will provide more information at a later date regarding other year levels and subjects utilising Turntin.

DEBATING NEWS What a fantastic way to complete the first round of the QDU Debating competition in 2013, with our Year 8’s pulling off a gripping 1 point victory over St Paul’s. The team, Max Marson, Ethan Green, Joe Grew-Figuerola and chief tactical support man Dillion Weatherhead, demonstrated the benefit of competing in the Year 7 Junior competition last year. The boys were confident and engaging in arguing that we shouldn’t ban contact sport, the adjudicator even noting that our boys presented a case that matched the complexity of those displayed in Year 10. It was great to see so many parents and siblings out supporting the boys (and super novice coach Ms Harris) as they made their official start in the QDU competition. With such an impressive first round we shudder to think just how good these boys might get.

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

EXIT PROCEDURES FOR YEARS 8, 9 AND 10 All students in Year 8, 9 and 10 will be required to complete a form before they exit from Term 1. The form has been included in the Student Diary on Page 58 and 59. It will be required to be signed off by various staff members and parents. laptops by their classroom teachers, library books by library staff, lockers and locks, by House Deans, assessment, by Mr Campbell and incomplete duties/detentions by Mr Torrisi. The form has been developed to make students accountable and serves as a check that your son has completed all his duties at school. Students who do not complete this form will be required to attend school until 3.00pm on the final day of school. TERM 2 UNIFORM: A reminder that all students are required to wear the college tie from the beginning of Term 2. Also all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 students require long trousers and blazers. These are available now from the Uniform Shop. LOST PROPERTY: There is an abundance of lost property in the Student Office from lunch boxes to uniforms and particularly shoes (black leather and sporting). It is disappointing that these items are not labeled. It is important that all items are labeled so that they can be returned to its rightful owner. At the end of this term we will be doing our usual donation to St Vincent de Paul and the Uniform Shop of any lost property which has not been claimed before then. Please come in and check it out. BLAZER: A reminder that all boys in Years 10, 11 and 12 will be required to wear their blazers to and from school during Term 2 and 3. In preparation for this I ask that if dry cleaning of blazers is required, that this is done over the next couple of weeks for the commencement of Term 2. MOBILE PHONES: A number of students continue to ignore the Mobile Phone Acceptable Use Policy. This

causes disruption to classes and the normal operation of the school day. Detentions have been issued to these boys and I ask all families to be familiar with the policy located in the Student Diary and to reinforce these guidelines with your son. PUBLIC TRANSPORT: St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. LAST DAY OF TERM: All students will be dismissed at 12.30 pm on Thursday 28 March. It is expected that all students attend school until 12.30 pm. Students will commence the day with an Easter Liturgy followed by the Shore to Gate. All buses will complete their normal Bus runs departing the College at 12.30pm.

Mr Terry Chapman College Old Boys

The Old Boys hold a meeting every 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Sandgate Hawks Aussie Rules Football Club, Lemke Rd Taigum at 7pm. These monthly meetings are open to any Old Boy’s who are interested in the direction of the Old Boys and listening and taking part in organising events. Most of the committee are present each month.

The more input we can get from Old Boys the better we can make our association. Generally we chat about what is on, what is coming up and any other business people want to raise. It's a good chance to have a beer and chat with other Old Boys. All are welcome.

LOST HATS Please check that your son has the correct hat - lost hat with the name of K OBERMAN. If found please return to the Student Office.

Mr Tim Walker Volleyball Round 7 / March 23

St Patrick’s College hosted St. Peter’s Lutheran College last weekend, a rematch of our trial round in week 1. Winning performances by 13A, 13B, 13C, 14B, 15C, 15B and 15A were recorded. Whilst our 1st VI did go down to the undefeated St. Peter’s team, I must commend them for their efforts on the sidelines cheering on our younger teams to victory. It is great to see the older students taking the ‘servant leadership’ role with two hands. This weekend is our last round of the season against St. Laurence’s College at Brady Hall. Our volleyball teams are looking forward to the challenge.
