Daniel This award recognizes an individual who has made significant contri- butions to the sports turf industry through his or her research, teaching or extension outreach, Their influence may be highly visible or behind- the-scenes. Criteria: Member of STMA, conducted research or devel- oped or executed teaching/extension programs relevant to the sports turf industry; research, teaching/extension programs enhanced the understanding of the sports turf industry; research has practical impli- cations; rcechmg/cxtension provide technical background and/or Pt'"> tical training'; research was published in a professional journal; teaching programs channel outstanding individuals to the sports turf industry. George Thma The George 'Ioma Golden Rake Awards acknowledges the superior performance of a sporl.S turf crewmember in "on the jub" activities and in community service. This 24-inchdiameter cement light pole was not pulled fromthe ground but actually broken at the base, andsubsequently fell on the field, crushing fencing net-ting and bleachers not to mention turf The poleremained on the turf for more than 2 months untilthe cily could find a crane company that was avail-able: to lift the poles off the field. Shortly after thisphoto was taken the field was rebuilt entirely withvolunteer labor and funds and featured on ABC's"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" reality showthat aired last March 30 as a rebuilding eilort afterthe Hurricane season of 2005.
