Several years ago my husband’s bishop tried initiating a diocese-wide call to the catechumenate to engage those preparing for confirmation in a period of study and formation. We call it confirmation class or catechism, something generations of Lutherans have gone through. But this was a new experience for the Episcopalians in his diocese. He set about developing a curriculum for prospective confirmands, only to encounter resistance. How do Lutherans get participation in multiyear catechetical instruction? I told him: “Five hundred years of hazing.”

We do have a history of communicating the faith from generation to generation. Martin Luther wrote the Small Catechism after the Saxon Visitation of the late 1520s, which examined the religious practices in the parishes of that part of Central Europe. He discovered a stunning lack of understanding of the basics of the Christian faith among laypeople and pastors. So in the Small Catechism he gives a concise but rich explanation of the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostles’ Creed, the commandments, baptism, communion, the Office of the Keys and confession. The Small Catechism became an important part of faith formation in families. Millions of us throughout the centuries and world have studied and memorized it. Catechism has been a rite of passage in the Lutheran movement. It could be argued that no other experience is more universally Lutheran than studying this little book—not language, not hymnody, not cuisine, not worship style.

“What does this mean?” and “This is most certainly true” are two of the most recognizable phrases in Lutheranism. It’s been said, “Youth is wasted on the young.” I’m not suggesting that studying the catechism isn’t beneficial to middle school students. But confining catechetical instruction to that age group and expecting fully formed disciples at the end of the process is probably a little unrealistic.

All of this has me wondering how we can bring our Lutheran traditions, unashamedly and gratefully, into our relationships with ecumenical and interreligious partners. The ELCA is fully committed to ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. We have six full communion partners: the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Reformed Church in America, the United Church of Christ, the Episcopal Church, the United Methodist Church and the Moravian Church. and moved by the Spirit we want to tell everybody the good news. Some argue that emphasizing our Lutheran identity is an impediment to dialogue and evangelism. I would argue that if we aren’t clear about who we are and what we believe it’s not possible to have deep and authentic encounters with others. It’s hard to have meaningful give-and-take with mush. There was a time in the 1980s when church growth experts urged us to shed denominational identity in favor of more generic, and so appealing, names for congregations. St. Paul Lutheran Church became the Church at Pheasant Run. It’s like selling our inheritance for a mess of marketing pottage. Of course we are baptized into the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church. Of course our identity is in Christ and not in a 16th-century Augustinian monk. But there is something distinctive about our Lutheran voice that needs to be heard in ecumenical and interreligious conversations and in the public square. If we aren’t clear about this we run the risk of sliding into relativism. It might be time for all of us to dust off our Small Catechisms (or find it in Evangelical Lutheran Worship, 1160) and take another look at the basics of the faith. Staff at the Lutheran Center in Chicago will be doing just that this fall. My guess is that places like Microsoft or McDonald’s take great care in immersing their people into their corporate culture. We are Lutheran Christians. With great humility we can be unapologetic about being Lutheran. It would be wonderful if we as the ELCA prepared for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 by studying the Small Catechism together. We have a common language with which to talk about faith, engage Scripture and make sense of our world. Catechism is not just for the young. This is most certainly true.

women (ages 12 and up) from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday,

The Van Wert Self Defense Team conducts the class,

which is designed to teach women how to avoid

dangerous situations and what they should do when

faced with unavoidable, unsafe circumstances. Class

participants will gain confidence, knowledge, and the

skills to protect themselves in this hands-on program.

Topics covered will include situation avoidance and

prevention, self-defense, and improvised defense tools.

The first part of the class will be discussion and the last

hour or so will be hands on. Participants should wear

loose-fitting and comfortable clothing.

Caring & Sharing Food Pantry Update Thank you to everyone who supports the Caring & Sharing Food Pantry throughout the year. Pastor Karen serves on the board of the Pantry and is privileged to volunteer on a regular basis. In May the board held its annual meeting and received the final reports for 2016. Your donations of personal care products, food, and money made it possible to:

Serve 417 families 1,591 times throughout the year;

That means 1136 people in Paulding County received nutritious food;

35% of those served are children; and 12% were senior citizens.

COMMUNITY MEAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Once again this fall we will begin our free community meals. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board for hosts. The dates are: Wednesday, September 13 – 5:30 p.m. St. John Members hosting Wednesday, October 11 – 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 8 – 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 13 – 5:30 p.m. Hosts choose the menu, enlist volunteers, and oversee service, set-up, clean-up, etc. The meal can be whatever the hosts choose. Reimbursement is available – please see Pastor Karen for more information.

We will welcome Maria Wolever from Soles4Souls to our worship services. Maria will be with us to share the stories of how they are serving God’s people everywhere.

We will also do a blessing of all the shoes we send out to those in need. We need a volunteer, preferably with a truck, to haul all the shoes to Defiance the week of September 11. Please see Pastor Karen if you can volunteer.

Very shortly it will be Back to School time and also time to fill backpacks for Lutheran World Relief. Our goal this year is to have 125 backpacks ready to send overseas in September. The easiest and most economical way to help is to shop the sales that will be coming up soon. There are lists and containers for your donations in the Narthex. If you would prefer to have me do your shopping, there is a blue folder marked “Backpack Donations” beside Pastor Karen’s office door. Please help with this worthy cause! Community Garden Update On Thursday, July 20th, Ann's Bright Beginning's children were invited down for a tour of the garden. The children got to pick basil to take home, help harvest radishes, learn how to weed, and vine up the cucumbers. After the stations the children got to do some taste testing. We had pesto pasta, three different kinds of zucchini bread, and caprese for the kids to try. They even got mini zucchini breads to take home and recipes for everything they taste tested. The kids had such a great time that they asked if they could come back and help pick more produce.

Also on Thursday, July 20th, we had a work day in the garden. During the work day we staked up the tomato plants, picked the rest of the basil, harvested and planted more radishes, cut the chives, fertilized, watered, and weeded.

On Saturday, July 22nd, we took our first batch of produce to the food pantry. This included basil, radishes, and chives.

On Sunday, July 23rd, we picked our first round of zucchini and harvested more radishes.

We hope to have Ann's Bright Beginning's back again sometime to help us harvest. A lot of harvesting will be done in the near future! If anyone is interested in volunteering to maintain the garden for a week you can contact Susan Farr at 419-399-7507.

ST. PAUL COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS June 20, 2017

Pastor reported that 13 people had signed up for the Ephesians Bible Study class that began the first week of June.

Community Connections Committee reported that they will be seeking hosts for fall Free Community Meals. St. John will host in September.

Council voted unanimously to place an ad on the Past Time Café new menus at a cost of $175 for a year (or possibly longer).

Evangelism and Member care announced a ministry fair for Sunday, September 10 immediately following worship. Each Committee is encouraged to make up a display letting members know what the committee does and how they can participate.

The council received the resignation of our volunteer cleaning crew. For personal reasons they are no longer able to clean the building effective June 30, 2017. Council decided to talk with the PC Workshop about the possibilities of partnering with them to clean our facility. Pastor Karen will follow up with the director.

The Shared Ministry Team announced an outdoor movie night this summer. Details to be determined.

Joan Mapes informed council that VBS planning was going well although more volunteers were needed.

Free lunch program: Pat Ross agreed to coordinate; we still need volunteers.

Council voted to remove Kurt Temple as a signer on the Otto Jacob Fund account and add Dan Wilder.

ST. JOHN COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS June 24, 2017

Council thanked Lula Mae and Rex Ankney for having our fire extinguishers checked and recharged.

Council changed our communion service from September 3 to September 10 due to Pastor Karen’s vacation. Jay Schmidt and Patti Stoller will lead the service.

The Community Meal scheduled for September 13 – the menu will be sloppy joes and hot dogs. Jodie will coordinate; we have Thrivent funds to cover the costs.

Council voted to purchase $1,000.00 in propane for this winter in advance to lock in the current low price of $1.29/gallon.

Jay Schmidt reported that our Certificate of Not-for-Profit status has been updated.

A draft of a sexual misconduct policy will be presented to the congregation for consideration at the August 6 congregation meeting. This policy is required by our insurance carriers.
