Illinois for the recently completed the construction of a building addition and renovation of the Chemistry Annex Building. Faculty, instructors, and staff of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as well as degree- seeking fine art students are not eligible to apply. PROJECT SUMMARY The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign committee is seeking to purchase artwork in a variety of media in three-dimensional for the interior and exterior of the recently completed Chemistry Annex Building. 1 The renovation and addition project consists of approximately 43,000 sf of existing laboratory and support space and an addition of approximately 9,000 sf of floor space of the University of Illinois Chemistry Annex Building, 601 South Mathews Avenue, Urbana, Illinois. The finished product is a new state of the art facility including instructional laboratory and support spaces. Because of the historic nature of the building and its many activities the committee is seeking to purchase artwork in a variety of media to be placed in focal areas in the most- public parts of the building and building surrounds. ARTISTIC OBJECTIVES The committee has created the objectives for specific areas to complement both the building and its uses. Choice of media for this project is quite open and includes a variety of media in three- dimensional pieces. Location 1: Exterior area east and/or west of north entry (see appendix for additional Information) Medium: Three-dimensional, ground mounted, material to be suitable for exterior exposure Theme: Piece or pieces should draw on the history of chemistry to emphasize the excitement of discovery and celebrate curiosity. Medium: Three-dimensional, suspended from the ceiling or the walls, metal, glass, ceramics or other material suitable for interior exposure.

Theme: Piece or pieces should draw on the history of chemistry to emphasize the excitement of discovery and celebrate curiosity.

PROJECT SITE The artwork will be located both indoors and outdoors in public areas. Final placement of the artwork will be decided by committee, the using agency, and where appropriate in consultation with the artist. Building floor plans are attached that show the areas identified for art.

BUDGET DETAILS The budget for the both pieces of artwork shall not exceed $79,000.

This budget covers all expenses associated with, but not limited to the design proposals, design, labor, fabrication, project management, materials, tools, contracted services, operations and meetings, travel required to complete the artwork plus installation, related permits, licenses, taxes, insurance, transportation and delivery of the work to the site, as well as documentation of the completed project. Any expense that exceeds the contracted amount will be the artist's responsibility.

If special installation requirements are needed for large and/or complex pieces, the artist is responsible for working with the University of Illinois Facilities & Services Art-in-Architecture Program, the using agency, and other relevant partners to oversee all aspects of the installation. Facilities & Services will provide a foundation for the exterior mounted artwork and structural supports for the interior artwork

SELECTION PROCESS Artists/teams may submit their work for consideration as defined below. The artists work that is selected will be announced on the AIA website. Letters will be sent to the selected artists/ teams with details of the proposal process and contracts.

Do not send a proposal unless you have been contacted by the Art-in-Architecture Coordinator.

LEGAL AGREEMENT

The University of Illinois Art-in-Architecture Program reserves the right to alter any aspect of the selection process or overall project in any way for its own convenience at any time. This Request for Artwork does not constitute either an expressed or implied contract and these provisions are subject to change.

Artists, artisans, and artist-led teams interested in the project should e-mail or post ONE copy of each of the following labeled with the artist's name as well as the project name and number.

Up to 15 JPEG images of the proposed artwork. If provided on a CD, please label it clearly with artist or team name as well as the project name and number. Please provide the images in the following format:

o One image per JPEG o Maximum file size per image: 1MB

o Name each image: project #lastnameimagenumber.jpg. for example: U1070miro01. o A corresponding numbered, annotated image list with title, media, dimensions, location, brief

description. date of the work. and project partners. if applicable. o When submitting by e-mail. please send images as attachments and not in the body of the

e- mail. References of at least three professionals (commissioning agency or organization. design or arts professional. architect. landscape architect. engineer. etc.) who have a detailed knowledge of the artist's work and working methods. Include contact name. complete address. telephone number. and e-mail for each reference. Optional. One PDF file of additional support material. including press clippings or other relevant information on past projects (maximum 1MB file) PowerPoint presentations are not accepted.

Please Note: Send art as JPEG files ONLY. Slides will not be accepted nor returned. All submittals become property of the Capital Development Board Art-in-Architecture Program and will not be returned. Submissions can be made available for public viewing. The artist retains copyright.

How AND WHERE TO SUBMIT Interested artists must send images of the artwork materials by Friday, January 20, 2017 at 4:00 P.M..

Submissions received after this date will be kept for review for other Art -in-Architecture projects.

ABOUT THE ART-IN-ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM The Resolution for an Art in Architecture Policy approved by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees on January 20, 2011, established a policy for all new building and major remodeling projects requiring Board approval to devote 0.5% of the construction budget to securing works of art that shall be placed within public areas at the project site.
