CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS AT THE 2011 ICM

The International Council Meeting (ICM) is the most important meeting for Amnesty International

worldwide. Representatives of all AI sections and structures will meet in Noordwijkerhout, near

Amsterdam in the Netherlands, from August 14 to August 19 or 20, 2011 (duration to be confirmed in

    January 2011).

The 2011 ICM will tackle issues that are vital to our movement, including how to implement the One

Amnesty model adopted by the 2009 ICM, strengthening Amnesty Internationals global democracy,

moving from assessment to distribution, and how we can best grow to better respond to and reflect the

perspectives of rights-holders and human rights defenders with whom, and on whose behalf, we work.

Volunteers from the membership are a key factor in the running of a successful ICM. Volunteers will

receive on-site training and will be organized in teams to ensure that meetings run smoothly, delegates are

kept informed, and problems are resolved.

The international budget has made provision for accommodation, food and incidental expenses for 40

volunteers, although volunteers themselves will be responsible for organizing and paying for their own

travel to and from Schiphol Airport. Transportation will be provided from Schiphol Airport to the site.

All volunteers will be expected to arrive in the Netherlands on August 8 th or 9th for training and to start

preparations for the meeting. Some volunteers will be expected to stay until August 22nd to help with the

    closing of the event.

All volunteers will be accommodated in shared rooms. Volunteers will be asked to work shifts within

teams; the work will be hard and some of the shifts will be outside normal working hours. However, everyeffort will be made to provide an opportunity for all volunteers to listen to the debates and to meet and

socialize with delegates. Please note that volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

The following skills and characteristics are needed:

    1. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills2. Ability to be good team player and willingness to work collaboratively with the ICM

Organizational team, Volunteer Coordinator and Deputy, team leaders and other team members

    3. Willing to work long and often demanding hours4. Excellent communication skills with knowledge of English and another language (French or
