Richland Hills, Texas, took home titles at the Cheetah Championship, the seventh stop on the 2008-09 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour. The final round was telecast live from AMF Thruway Lanes on ESPN. Bohn III’s 32nd career title came after defeating No. 3 seed Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas 242-198 in the televised championship round. “I had one ball that worked all week, my Twisted Fury; I had tried to use others, but it was almost impossible to get through the pins,” said Bohn III, who is currently fifth on the list of all-time PBA Tour titlists. Bohn III was the top seed entering the final round after defeating No. 2 seed Patrick Allen of Wesley Chapel, Fla. in Friday’s final position round 279-237. “If it’s a stepladder format, I want to be No. 1 every week, that’s the way I like it” said Bohn III, who only had to win one match on Sunday’s tele- cast to win the championship. Scroggins advanced to Sunday’s championship match by climbing the ladder in the stepladder format, first defeat- ing No. 4 seed and local fan favorite Jack Jurek of Lack- awanna, N.Y., 235-175, then No. 2 Allen, 222-200. PBA Women’s Series Dorin-Ballard defeated No. 2 seed Stefanie Nation of Ar- lington, Texas, to take home the Cheetah Championship trophy and her 2nd career PBA Women’s Series title. “This was a very emotional day for me,” said Dorin-Bal- lard. “It’s Pearl Harbor Day, and my dad was a P.O.W. in World War II, and I felt like he was looking out for me.” Dorin-Ballard defeated Nation 208-204 in the close championship match. Dorin- Ballard threw a clutch strike the first shot in the 10th frame and then left a 1-2-4-10 wash- out, sparing it to force Nation to strike the first shot in the 10th frame. Nation left a stub- born 10 pin to give Dorin-Bal- lard the title. “Stefanie did really well in the 10th, but I got a break and took it,” said Dorin-Ballard. “The lanes were tight and if I didn’t catch it the way I need- ed to, I wouldn’t have gotten the strikes.” For the first time in PBA history, the Women’s Series final was shown first on the telecast, followed by the men’s stepladder competition and men’s championship round. The Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour continues next week at the Lumber Liquidators Shark Championship at Coun- try Club Lanes in Baltimore, Md. The finals will be telecast live on ESPN at 1 p.m. ET. TRAVELLEAGUEBy Alice

MeglemreANAHEIM—The Vegas

travelers bowled at Linbrook on Monday for the first of four consecutive weeks and Car-rie , at the control desk, was the greatest. Also, we were so pleased to see Pat Will-more this week. Pat had to quit bowling this year but Nan McGill sees to it that Pat drops by for a visit often and we look forward to seeing her again a week from Monday when she celebrates her 90th birthday.

Super sub Teri Hefner led the honor roll this week with 212-585, followed by Doris Lewis 211-571, Margo Mc-Clain 202-570, Cil Moons 204-507, Dee Phipps 238-541, Kathy Parrish 531, Bernice Bennett 529, Madeline Majick 528, Melba Knight 200-525. Myrt Owens 517, Jean Morby 513, Norma Payne 503, Gla-dyce Perrin 497, Betty Phillips and Patti Givehchin tied on 495 clusters and Lynette Wil-liams 492.

Doris’ Hair Designs enjoy a 2-game lead with 33 wins, followed by Cerritos #2, 31; Keystone #2, 30.2; Westmin-ster #1, 30, David McNaught CPA 29.2; Keystone #1, 29; Valley View #2, 25; Cerritos #1, 24; Cal Bowleros 23.2; Westminster #2, 22 and the rest of the league trails at 19-18-15- two at 14.2 and cellar team at #12.2.

We hoped to have a report about Berneice King, follow-ing major surgery on Monday, but we are all sending prayers her way to assure a success-ful operation and recovery. Bernice Bennett is taking care of the high games and series scratch side pot during her ab-sence.

More Christmas gifts were displayed Monday when Roberta’s daughter, Dava, brought beautiful jewelry and Joan Roper also had slippers, scarves and bracelets behind her lanes. The Christmas par-ty-potluck is slated December 22, and a reminder again that the optional $10 gift exchange for strikes will be handled by Charlie ‘Santa’ Williams.

BOWLING NEWS December 11, 2008

Jowdy’s Journalby John Jowdy

During the past few weeks, six of the most worthy individu-als in bowling, Tom Kouros, Gene Stus, Lowell Rothschild, Del Ballard, Norm Duke and John Handegard achieved the highest honors in the game. .

Kouros, Stus, and Rothschild selections were the latest addi-tions the USBC Hall of Fame.

Duke, Ballard, and Handegard breezed into the PBA Hall of Fame.

In my opinion, the establishment of an athletic Hall of Fame is one of the most noteworthy institutions society can render to a community, state, or country. It is emblematic of performers whose deeds brought glory, honor, and fame to the area they rep-resent.

A Hall of Fame, in essence, is a shrine for immortals; a sanc-tuary that separates super stars from the less fortunate and lesser talented individuals. These honorees are selected in the perfor-mance category. Additionally, it also honors individuals in the meritorious category; those whose deeds and actions unselfishly contributed to the betterment of the sport.

Principally, inductees must be thoroughly and accurately re-searched. Favoritism, partiality, or biased opinions must be set aside. Selections to Halls of Fame should never be founded on a popularity basis.

Nonetheless, bowling has had its share of biased opinions. It was rumored that Buddy Bomar’s delayed induction into the ABC Hall of Fame was principally due to the fact that Joe Wil-man, a Bomar foe and a major force on the Hall of Fame Board, used his influence to block Bomar’s path to the hallowed sanctu-ary.

Several years later, the ABC Hall of Fame board came under stern criticism when a dozen or so members were admitted to the Hall of Fame in a block. The selection committee reasoned that time was fleeting; that these particular individuals were on their last go-round and would soon be by-passed and forgotten. It befuddled many bowling writers around the nation but more than that, it infuriated several Hall of Famers who felt the actions had diluted the quality of the Hall; that it diminished the luster and honor that symbolized a seat in the elite shrine.

On a happy note, I‘d like to express my glee in the selection of Tom Kouros and Del Ballard to their respective Hall of Fame inductions. This is not meant to demean others who were selected but Ballard’s and Kouros’ inductions were LONG OVERDUE.

In my opinion, Tom Kouros is the most knowledgeable in-dividual in bowling. He is a bowling proprietor. He was an out-standing bowler. Although he never achieved Hall of Fame status in the performance category, he was a highly respected bowler in the Chicago area. He is one of, if not the best bowling instructors in the world. Kouros has coached and helped coach many of the most outstanding amateur and professional bowlers in America and throughout the world, including women bowlers. In fact, the World Bowling Writers instituted the annual Tom Kouros Out-standing International Coach Award in his honor, an honor recog-nizing his reputation as a coach. He has authored two of the most comprehensive bowling instructional books. He is a graduate of Illinois University with a degree in physics, a degree that he has successfully applied in his bowling philosophies. He is an excel-lent writer and has penned interesting and informative articles in the International Bowlers Journal for many years.

Despite all these attributes, Kouros’ belated selection to bowling’s highest honor has, in all likelihood, been stunted by his frank and outspoken opinions…a trait that can occasionally rile, irritate, and annoy his critics. Nonetheless, I admire Kouros’ straightforward candidness far more than I do individuals who placate those with diverse opinions just for the sake of “getting along”.

Del Ballard’s selection to the PBA Hall of Fame was inevi-table….a mortal cinch. His induction, as well as that of Norm Duke, was delayed when the present PBA hierarchy originally ruled that no one could qualify for Hall of Fame status unless they were retired for five years. Fortunately, the rules recently reverted to the original PBA requirements and Ballard’s selection was a mere formality.

On the other hand, Del has failed to meet the required 70% vote for induction to the USBC Hall of Fame by the narrowest of margins, simply due to the fact that the competition was so strong. Furthermore, because of recent PBA/USBC rule chang-es, Ballard may be further delayed. The new regulations for in-duction into the USBC Hall of Fame have opened the doors for all-time greats like Marshall Holman, Mark Roth and Johnny Pe-traglia. With all due respect, these players will further complicate Ballard’s chances to receive the required 70% vote for election. The eligibility of Holman, Roth, and Petraglia have certainly dampened Del’s luck for the time being.

As in many other sports, there is a lot of luck involved in at-taining hall of fame status. When classes of quality hopefuls for induction are so competitive, a 70% margin of approval can be a difficult task. Consequently, a very worthy candidate may have to wait for what may seem an eternity to enter the prestigious club of immortals….the USBC Hall of Fame.

Nonetheless, sooner or later, Del Ballard’s USBC Hall of Fame plaque will be placed among bowing’s greatest achievers.

CERRITOWS—Steve An-derson was the best as he won his fIrst ABTA Title at Cerritos Lanes finally downing Ale-jandro Garcia in the title game.Steve, who joined last month made the best of it as he won from the top seeded position in the finals.

The scoring was decent at Cerritos as it took Men +66, and the Ladies +16 making the board on Saturday and the 10:15 AM Squad Sunday morning had Men +43 Ladies +26. Super Seniors added to the board were Leo Tartamel-la, Art Lindsey and Bobbie Mc Collum.

The Semis took the floor in hopes of making the top 16. Steve Anderson fired a big 279/296 3rd game to vault to the top and be able to sit out and bowl for the title. In 2nd was Tony Tang who received a first round bye and would en-ter in round two of the the top 16. It took a +24 to make the top 16 including 4 women who made the cut.

In round one of the finals Single elim losing were Bheth ”Ms Bite” Alcayde, Jeredei Harnpatananakitpanich, Buth Obrar, Rey Joseafat, Anna Bautista, Anthony Dancel Rogelio, Esquivel, and Bar-bara Burgess. They got checks of $100.

Round two saw Glen Mabilangan, Emilio Flores,

Gino Mansilungan, and Oscar Ibardolaza lose out. They got checks for $110 in 6th thru 9th places.

Round three saw Bobbie Mc Collum take out Steve Domon 191/175. Alejandro Garcia outstruck Tony Tang 267-226. They were 4th and 5th with great bowling and $120 with Bobbie and Aje-jandro to meet for the right to bowl Anderson for the title.

This game was a good one but the splits got to Bobbie and Garcia wins at the end easily 228-181. Bobbie was 3rd with great bowling and $200 with Garcia off to the title game.

The title game now under-way. In a close match as both had had one open in the 2nd frame. Garcia took a lead with a double, then had a washout. After 6 frames it was near even inc the handicap differ-ence. But Garcia had opens in frames 7-8 and just couldn’t make up the difference. Ander-son wins it 178/197 to 144/177 and proved that spares mean a big thing on a semi tough con-dition. Congrats Steve on a great win and title #2 is in your future. Steve is very Likable and we are glad to have him in the ABTA.

Alejandro Garcia is also likable and almost got the win.. He is an up and coming bowler who gives his all on the lanes. He will win one soon .

Great Bowling by Bob-bie, Steve Doman, and Tony Tang. Anyone of these could have won the title at Cerritos. Tourney. Hi Qualifiers were Red Hot Jhon Tan +167. Bar-bara Burgess led the ladies +55. They each get a paid en-try to any regular event.

The doubles were topped by the Bowling Mansilungans Carlo and Gino, 1460, good for $170, edging portsiders Alan Basto and Danny Eguilos 1455 $150. Andrew Lung and Jimmy Wong 3rd 1415 $140.We paid 18 places and $1,430 in the doubles.

The Match Game was UN-Matched at 236 so with the carryover of $2,060 we esti-mate $3,500 this week at West Covina Lanes.

The Match Series was Matched at a 570 by Som Seng and Paul Fenner worth $320. They got $160 each. We estimate the Match Series to be $350 this week and only $2.00 to enter.

Anthony Dancel was last up in the 3-6-9 roll and missed on shot #1. We go for $1,100 this Saturday at West Covina. He got a $50 Consolation for beer money.

Champ Steve Anderson is from Redondo Beach and used a Cell drilled by Arvo at Gil’s Pro Shop. He is a proud father of Paige a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

He thanks coach and Mentor Roy Walker for the help in his bowling. He hasn’t bowled much for 20 years and making up for lost time. Kudos to the Merry Makers (League) at Mar Vista Lanes and to Bob and the ABTA for a great tournament.

Alejandro Garcia is from Glendale and used a Bash drilled by Brandon at Jewel City Bowl. He is single and he surely thanks his pretty Mom Vilma for support. Vilma is at most every ABTA Event also, and Looking like his sister not his mother :-)

Bobbie McCollum is from La Habra and used a Vibe drilled by Mikey Wahl at Cer-ritos Lanes . She thanks hubby Jack for support and Grand-sons Caden, Cole, Casey, and granddaughter Dylan and the ABTA Family for support.

We had 9 new members at Cerritos and first time cashers were Jeredei H. , Jimmy Na-tividad, and Robert Fales.

Bobbie Mc Collum 3rd, Steve Anderson (Champion) Alejandro Garcia (runner up ) Vilma Garcia Alejandro’s Mother and #1 Fan!

Match Series Winners: Som Seng, Paul Fenner

Winners of the Fight pick-ing Pacquio in round 8 were Ace Cordero $100 and Dan-ny Eguilos $50. Nine people picked him in round 8 and these won the bowl-off for the cash. I predicted a Pac-quio win and if De La Hoya were a warrior he would have fought as the real fighters do. He is not a warrior but smart and could see that if he did so they must have the ambulance ready for sure :_). He didn’t want to go on a stretcher :-) he is very smart! Great Go-ing by Manny Pacquio a true champion who gives so much to his people esp the poor. He is Most Deserving.

Drawn for a chance at the Hot Shot Pot was Gino Manis-lungan. He missed so the Hot Shot Pot is $1509 this week. Free to our members. Gina got a $25 consolation.

Thanks to the Super Cerri-tos Staff, Paul, and Crew, esp. Maria, and Jackie for a superb job they are just great there.

It’s History folks as Steve Anderson enters the archives as our latest champion. This Saturday, we are hosted by West Covina Lanes in West Covina in a 0ne Day event. Qualifying squads are 12:00-1:00 2:30-4:00 & 6:00 PM and Semis at 7:45 PM.

The Following Saturday (One Day) Christmas Event at Bowling Square Lanes in Arcadia 12:00-1:00-2:30-4:00 & 6:00 PM. Lots of Gifts and Prizes. Check in Early. Gifts on every squad.

LAKEWOOD — Only in Southern California can you have a va-riety of weather in a week. First it was rain, then cold winds, then sunny days with temperatures around 80 degrees with a possibility of rain for the weekend. In the higher elevations during the winter, you can throw in some snow for those skiers. So everyone gets their choice of weather. People are feeling festive as they decorate their homes with Christmas lights and decorations. Take a ride around your neight-borhood and enjoy the sights. It can’t help but make you feel happy and the kids really enjoy it. Here is the Cal Bowl Bowling Report...

STUDIO CITY — This article now stands for what we believe in NON-SEQUITARs. Indeed the College BCS Series is upon us and we can not celebrate the hometown favorite University of Buffalo Bills in the International Bowl...ok, so sorry, I mean USC isn’t in the BSC title game. We have our own champions that may or may not have attended college.

PINZ ADULTS These dirty Gators are the sole reason to come in and see them fl o-ride through other teams. Their scores are like cutting through a brick of wigmore cheese (the food not his commentary). The good-ness spreads like butter and we all love butter on a hot day in the swamp. Here’s the scores: Tavern Guild: Jeff Pifko 233/633, David Quam 236/622, Tony Annibale 213/605, Jan Chambers 222, Curt Zellers 222, Rick Kondo 213. PINZ JUNIORS We missed Mrs. Lee very much this week, not just because she was at the Steelers game. We wanted to thank her for all of her contributions to the sport of bowling and football fanship. She has her very own Troy Polomalau bowling ball that continually bowls strikes. Yet, you have to wipe it off occassionally, the hair may be too long (only for NFL people). Here are the tangent fi lled scores: Adult Junior: Brad Spector 215/596, Ethan Bensinger 223/590, Jamie Spector 247/558, Max Korn 192/500, Damond Taylor 193/493. Senior Scratch: Brittlan Halpern 236/856, Treven Goldsmith 221/790, Natalie Kato 220/781, Nikolai Berk 225/775, Scott Engle-hart 768, Natalie Honda 220. Pee Wee Bumpers: Hugh Cooper 97/168, Art Michener 85/166, Andrew Parker 75/140, Samantha Vargas 75/140, Steven Santiago 59/116.

PINZ SENIORS/LADIES Hi, hello, and good day. These sentiments fl oat around like Sooner’s receivers in a big game. Maybe you like Florida or Okla-homa in the big game, but one thing is for sure; you don’t care about what we write about in this article. Wordums, peace, and go UB Bulls, Here’s the scores: Happy Timers: Ken Burkenheim 235/546, Nelson Hicks 545, Ruth Swick 171/460, Yolanda Dragotta 160/445, Gary Olsen 206. He bowled a 258 game during Twilighters for a 716 series. Yet, the real acclaim is in his candor and good character. Great bowling, Mark. Niceness Quote of the Week: “I told you this week I would not be on topic, how ‘bout that BCS?” Monsignor Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein the Third (squared) esq.

HUNTINGTON PARK—For-give me dear readers for taking an extra week off, but I had an unfor-tunate mishap which I must attri-bute mostly to my carelessness.

Without going into too much detail, remember that this is the holiday season, and that means in-creased vigilance when you go out to the shopping malls and movies theatres. Otherwise, you may lose your important personal belong-ings such as laptops and scores from two weeks ago – end of pub-lic service announcement.

I managed to hold onto your results from Gage long enough to note some fine shooting by Jeremy Glover. I know this is your sec-ond 900 (did I mention Del Rio), but the new season high is now 985. Jeremy’s high 268 game in conjunction with Keyon’s perfor-mance led his team to sweep all competitors. Keyon helped the effort with a 215/779, for a 1764 new season high team score.

Lawrence Merriweather should not be overlooked (how can you) with his 256 and 801 series. Brent Shern followed with a 255/796 along with upstart Brandon Pekins at 225/790. Bowling 200 games were Steven Alford with 218, and Justin Gadaire 202. In the inter-esting 6-man baker match, Team Shirniece easily overtook Team Demenia (or Teamenia) for a vic-tory of a score that fails to come to mind. I’ll write it down this week, I promise.

Before we get to this week, don’t forget about JBT Main Event at Texas Station this Christ-mas. If you don’t know about it, go to www.juniorbowlerstour.com and click on the Main Event link. If you’re looking for an exciting and challenging tournament, then this is it! We’re at Gardena Bowl this Saturday at 1:30, so see you there!

LAKEWOOD—Here is our update for the JAT Farm Club. Our last tournament found us at Cal Bowl on No-vember 16th. Twenty-seven bowlers took to the floor with a “change of pace” format, using the Open division’s for-mat of six qualifying games and bracket eliminations. Taking advantage of the good lineage, we decided to cut to the top 16 for match play.

In the qualifying round, Brett Huntoon gave us our tournament high game with a near perfect 278. He also had a 258 in the mix. However, leading the way was Daniel Updegraff with his first five games of 227-226-258-237-228. He led after qualify-ing at plus 190. Other high scores during the round came in from John McCullin 269-263-224, Mark Myers 259-258, Wesley Low 247-227, Stevn Roderick 246, Brian Hernandez 244-244-235-222, Kaitlin Mayall 244-231, Noel Sosa 244-223, Victor Hilva-no 222-222-237-243, Nolan Smith 227-236, Godfrey Gal-sim 236, Steven Alford 231, Marty McDonald 227, Nicole Shepard 225-223, Alex Fisher 223, and Eric Torrence 221. The cut to advance came in at minus 62.

In the first round of elimi-nations many of the sets went a full three games, allowing the bowlers to get their mon-ies worth. Notables from this round go to Huntoon 258-247, McCullin 258-227, Mayall 230-255, Gary Smith 244, Shepard 238-226, Ran-dall DeLeon 237, Galsim

A.J. Garcia Strikes For His First TitleThe JAT headed over to Lakewood for our annual visit to Cal

Bowl. Luckily someone noticed that the lanes hadn’t been oiled after Rock n’ Bowl the night before so we got a late start after the shot was put down. It didn’t matter to Charlie Hair who led qualifying with a whopping +254 followed closely by Brandon Kraye at +230. Low to make the cut in 16th place was Melissa Pena at +54 while Preston Fukumizu took the alternate spot at +47. After only one upset we advanced to the round of 8 where 8th seed A.J. Garcia took down top-seed Charlie Hair 2-0 while 4th seed Travis Zehntner dismissed 12th-seed Jeremy Glover in two. On the other side of the bracket, 2nd-seed Brandon Kraye strung 12 for a perfect 300 handing DeeRonn Booker a tough 300-278 elimination in game 2. Mark Curtis Jr. took out 6th-seed Devin Bidwell to advance to the semis. In the semi finals, Travis Zehntner took A.J. Garcia to game 3 but A.J. strung 12 of his own for a perfect 300 game and a spot in the finals. Brandon Kraye finally met his match against Mark Curtis Jr. 277-234 in the elimination game bolting Mark to the final match. The two non-champs went at it for their first title with Mark striking first with a 215-184 win but it was all A.J from there 208-196 and 199-168 for the 2-1 win and his first title. Congratulations A.J.!

227, Updegraff 224, and My-ers 224. Surprisingly, some of those high scores came in a losing effort.

In the next two rounds My-ers started to make his presence known with a 269 game in the round of eight and 224-265 in the semis. Others highs were from Galsim 247, McCullin 244, Hernandez 234, Huntoon 231, and Shepard 222.

The finals then placed My-ers against Huntoon, both look-ing for their first title. Myers being the veteran though put all question of concern out of reach going two straight games of 247-217 and 217-199 for his long overdue title. Congratulations Mark.

Well bowlers, you’ve en-joyed a little time off to feast and live life outside of bowl-ing, yeah right. Our next tour-nament is this coming Sunday at Keystone Lanes. Check-in begins at 8:15 and we’ll be running our normal Farm Club format (5 and 5 and finals). This will be our Christmas tournament with a few raffles and maybe some surprises. It would be nice to see the entire Farm roster (plus new bowl-ers) there.

As a quick side note: We will be doing the Open format at least one more time before the end of the season in June, but there will be plenty of ad-vance notice given, as points in this format are doubled along with other advantages to the high shooters. When announced, these are the tour-naments you really don’t want to miss.

Have a good remainder of the week and I’ll see you at Keystone.
