Plastic Disposal

2003 Statewide Study (cont.)– Plastics 9.5% of overall statewide

disposed waste, film plastic 4.4% (again, almost half of all plastic disposed)

– Approx. 1.7 million tons film disposed; 1.2 million tons in commercial, 440,000 tons in residential, 130,000 tons in self-haul

– Plastic grocery/merchandise bags are mostly disposed in the residential waste stream

Plastics Disposal Selected Industry Groups study identified

key opportunities for film plastic diversion in several major industry groups:– Wholesale Distributors– Building Material and Garden Retailers– General Retail, both Big-Box and Other

Not much film plastic in C&D, Self-haul, or Drop-box waste

Film plastic is 7.8% of MRF residuals, estimated to be approx. 580,000 tons statewide

Hospital Blue Wrap Collection

Metrics–Number & percentage of

participating hospitals– Aggregate amount of film

generated and collected by region
