    Yosemites granite landscapes moved John

Muir and Ansel Adams. For Bono and the

U2 boys it was the desert harmony of JoshuaTree. Even George Lucas found his inspiration

for the alien worlds of Endor and Mos Eisley

aer exploring the North Coast redwoods

and Death Valley. What will Californiainspire in you?

happy go lucky. then go hiking.

Lace up your hiking boots and hit the trail

at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve in San

Diego, where the footpaths lead through

    groves ofPinus torreyana(the nations rarest

tree) to take-your-breath-away viewpointsand long stretches of empty beach. en

cruise down the coast to Mission Bay, Ameri-

cas largest man-made aquatic park, where the

    outdoor footwear varies from wakeboards

and kayak booties to canvas deck shoes andbare feet for beach volleyball.

    surf something other thanthe web.

You can try to resist, but eventually on a tri

to California, youre going to nd yourselfsaying I really need to learn how to surf.

And there is no better place to put you in a

surng state of mind than Surf City, U.S.A

    Huntington Beach. is Orange County

beachside burg boasts the International SurMuseum, the Surf Walk of Fame and more

than 50 days of wave-related events each

year, from the annual knee boarding festiva

to the Hurley U.S. Open (the worlds larges

    surf competition).

you may want to leave aforwarding address so we canreturn your heart.

Sitting on the dock of the bay is pure

inspiration, but it isnt the only way to savo

waterfront San Francisco. Charter a sailboaand make like the U.S. Americas Cup racing

team based at Golden Gate Yacht Club.

More of a progressive? en escape to Alca-

traz on the nations rst hybrid ferry, powered

largely by solar panels, wind turbines andgrid electricity. Snag a big one on a sport

shing boat out of Fishermans Wharf or a

home run ball out of McCovey Cove on a

rented kayak during a Giants game.

Art imitates life is Californias outdoor creed. Its a place where the great

escape isnt just some dreamy state of mind, but a million different ways to get

your hands dirty, your heart pumping and your mind inspired by Mother Nature.

Inspiration can come from anywhere. But,it usually comes from California.

more than a quarter o the state protected by

parks, open space and wilderness areas, its easy

to get your hands dirty in Caliornia. Tats

because Caliornias climate begs you to break a sweat no matter

what the season. Natures ootprint in the Golden State

is truly grand, an open-air playground that spreads

all the way rom the High Sierra to the Pacifc shore.

through the soaring trees o the Del Norte Coast Redwoods in

the ar north, as pristine today as it was a thousand years ago.

Clamber to the top o Mt. Diablo in the Bay Area or a view

that takes in more o the earths surace than just about any

other place on the planet. Cruise the gigantic Oceano Dune

Ride, a rough and tumble trail south o Lake ahoe. And

then wind down (with a splash o Caliornia wine) a

For Beth Rodden, climbing is more than a spare time hobby,

its a lifestyle. Of course, it wasnt always this way. Growing up in

Davis, Beth had a normal childhood until a local climbing gym

opened in her town. From that point on, her life has revolved

around one obsession: climbing. As one of the worlds most

accomplished female free climbers, Beth has many credits to

her name, including being the rst woman to free climb two

routes on El Capitan in Yosemite, where she currently resides.
