Certified Farmers’ Market or Swapmeet/Flea Market Fruit Seller Safeguarding Requirements

If screening/netting is used, it must be raised at least ½ inch off all fruit and vegetables listed on the exotic fruit fly host list. This prevents the female flies from laying eggs through the screening/netting into the fruit. Plastic sheets can be in direct contact with fruit listed on the host list. Safeguarding methods not listed must be approved by the Project before implementing. Back Stock 1. All exotic fruit fly host material (FFHM) not on display must be safeguarded away from the display area at all times by covering with plastic sheets, screening/netting, or tarps (all sides of the boxes or bins must be covered to the ground), or kept within an enclosed vehicle with all doors and windows closed. 2. All plastic sheets, screening/netting, or tarps used must be in good condition. All torn plastic sheets, screening/netting, or tarps must be repaired or replaced. 3. Do not store boxes of FFHM below the display tables. 4. All back stock FFHM that has not been properly safeguarded is subject to immediate seizure for destruction. Display Tables 1. All plastic sheets or screening/netting used must be long enough to hang below the display table at all sides. This prevents gaps that the flies can pass through to get to the fruit. Do not overstock the display tables if it raises the plastic sheets or screen/netting and creates gaps between the FFHM and the display table. 2. All plastic sheets or screens/netting used must be in good condition. All torn plastic sheets or screens/netting must be repaired or replaced. 3. Plastic containers with lids or tied plastic bags are approved safeguarding measures. Mesh bags or plastic bags with holes must be kept under plastic sheets or screening/netting. 4. All FFHM on the display table that has not been properly safeguarded is subject to immediate seizure for destruction. 5. All FFHM on the display table that has been properly safeguarded throughout the market day poses no risk of infestation and may be removed by the seller at the end of the market day.
