The lodge is their home and it sits in the water.

Beavers also build dams to hold the river water back.

Beavers use parts of their bodies to do their work. They use their teeth to cut down trees.

A beaver has back paws that are webbed. These paws help push the water when the beaver swims.

Beavers have a coat of fur. Special oil keeps it dry. Beavers use their claws to comb their fur.

The beaver’s tail is big, flat, and scaly. It helps the beaver move through the water.

When there is danger, a beaver hits the top of the water with its tail. It makes a very loud sound!

15

A beaver’s eyes are small—so are its ears. They can see and hear very well in and out of the water.

16

Beavers need to live in a place where there is water and there are trees.

17

Beavers like trees that grow close to the water. A willow is a kind of tree that grows near rivers.

18

The roots of a willow tree like lots of water. Water in the river helps the willows grow.

19

Willows make lots of tiny seeds. They fall from the tree and float on the water.

20

New willow trees grow along the bank of the river. When they get bigger, beavers can use them to build their homes.

Beavers eat the leaves, the bark, and roots of willow trees, too. They like to eat the willow sprouts.
