ZUGUNRUHE The Inner Migration To Profound Environmental Change, Jason McLennanby Marilyn Farmer, AIA, LEED APZUGUNRUHE - The Inner Mi-gration To Profound Environmental Change is not like McLennan’s other books that provide philosoph-ical insights into sustainable design for the building industry, or provide a dumb architect’s guide for select-ing the right glazing for a building, or how to become an ecological engineer. This is a very personal journey of what it means to live in this moment and how we can and do shape things to come. As the book title suggests, this is about the personal inner migration that will be required to effect the desired change to a more sustainable world for our children and children’s children— a Living Future.

ZUGUNRUHE offers a series of peaceful, thoughtful and very personal introspections that inform and inspire us all to begin to create our own road map to the profound transformation and change that will be needed to create a future in which we and future generations can thrive. It is the inner journey that makes the outer journeys of sustainable design informed and possible. McLennan, in his most recent book, takes his message per-sonally with unexpected twists and turns, dealing with the same daily challenges and paradoxes that face us all, but particularly those in the fields of design and building.

One of the seemingly most perti-nent parts of this book is a section dealing with getting stuck in a rut. In my world, it seems that feeling seems to come ‘round on a

Credentialing Simplifiedby Stacey WhiteWisely, with the creation of the tiered system, USGBC instituted a required credentialing maintenance program. Those of you reading this with an architectural license, or members of the AIA are very familiar with the credential main-tenance idea. With USGBC, all units are self reported through their online CMP tool. Keeping your professional credentials up to date is critical to remaining informed and relevant in today’s rapidly ever-changing building market.

These units come in a whole host of formats. Fortunately, our tri-county region with a local chapter of the USGBC, is well positioned to give you access to achieving these units, in a low cost, high learning impact way.

There are eight basic ways to earn units. Here they are with some advice about how to easily find opportuni-ties in each category:

Education Reviewing Body-approved activities: These are courses that have been officially approved by the USGBC. C4 offers quarterly events that qualify under this category. Check

your regional category for opportu-nities.

• You earn 1 CE hour for first hour; 0.5 CE hours for each ad-ditional full half of an hour

• 2 CE hours for time spent de-veloping content for instructors

• Limit: None. The same instruc-tional program can be counted only once.

Live presentations: This includes attending or present-ing real-time presentations to an audience or via broadcast technol-ogy. C4 has monthly (free to mem-bers) presentations that qualify for this category! Check your regional calendar for opportunities.

• You earn: 1 CE hour for first hour; 0.5 CE hours for each ad-ditional full half of an hour

• 2 CE hours for time spent de-veloping content for presenters

• Limit: 50% of required CE hours for attending and present-ing combined, 5 CE hours for attending

Self-study: This includes participating in struc-tured study (audio, audio-visual, written, online, etc.), an examina-tion, or reading.

• You earn: 1 CE hour for first hour; 0.5 CE hours for each ad-ditional full half of an hour

• Limit: 5 CE hours

College and university courses:Completing or teaching courses offered at accredited colleges or universities. Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo has a variety of courses that they offer that qualify in this area. Are you student with a Green Associate credential? You can easily acquire your credential, maintain it and work toward your bachelor and or master degree all at the same time!

• You earn: 1 CE hour per class-room hour

• 2 CE hours for time spent de-veloping content for instructors

• Limit: None

Certificates, professional licenses, and credentials: Initial earning of a certificate, professional license, or credential related to green building.

• You earn: 1 CE hour for certifi-cates

• 3 CE hours for licenses and credentials

• Limit: None. (Sample designa-tions listed in Appendix D.)

Committee and volunteer work that support the LEED system:Admittedly this is probably my favorite CMP credit category. C4 has opportunities galore for you to participate here! Care about educa-tion? Volunteer for Green Schools. Design green homes. Volunteer for Green Homes. Care about it all? Volunteer as a Regional Council leader or Board Member. See here for opportunities to come play: http://usgbcc4.clubwizard.com/HowtoGetInvolved.cfm

• You earn: 2 CE hours for hold-ing a leadership position

• 0.5 CE hours per meeting at-tendance

UCSB Ocean Science Education BuildingJordan Sager, LEED AP UC Santa Barbara’s Ocean Science Education Building (OSEB), a collaboration between the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) research group and the University of California, Santa Bar-bara (UCSB), broke ground in early 2010. A state of the art educational facility, when completed it will con-nect visitors through a compelling hands-on program.

The 7,190 SF office building will function as the primary admin-istrative space for operation of the CINMS. Space types include private and open offices, meeting rooms, library, kitchenette and changing room.

The 9,730 SF Outreach Center for Teaching Ocean Science (OCTOS) is intended to serve groups of K-12 students and adult audiences. The project will include a live deep reef habitat, supplemental dry exhibits and a virtual immersion experi-ence through use of a multimedia interactive technology theater and research classroom.

A passive, low energy and user adapted HVAC scheme was designed for this project, utilizing natural ventilation for cooling the majority of the year. Taking advan-tage of the predominantly south to north summer wind direction, operable skylights atop the two story atrium will help drive natural

ventilation through the buildings core and open offices. The project also takes advantage of thermal mass principles for temperature regulation.

Mechanical cooling water require-ments for the facility will be pro-vided through heat exchange with the campus sea water distribution system. This is possible through the use of low energy cooling systems that operate at higher water and air temperatures than traditional cool-ing systems. Radiant slab heating using in-slab piping will provide heating for the occupied zones. Two building control zones will be cre-ated, each with an individual mani-fold and temperature sensors. Two internal thermostats will control the circulation of water within the slab and will reset based on outside air temperature. T-8 light fixtures with dimmable ballasts and day lighting controls will maximize natural light

and occupancy sensors will be in-corporated into the lighting control system to maximize efficiencies.

Build SMART Clone Makes Its San Diego DebutWally Geer, AIA, LEED AP

The C4 BuildSMART Trailer has played a significant role in spread-ing our sustainable design and construction mission. At the Santa Monica AltBuild Green Trade show last year, the trailer caught the eye of executives from The Califor-nia Center of Sustainable Energy (CCSE), a San Diego based non-profit with a mission dedicated to creating change for a clean energy future. Upon returning home to San Diego, the management of CCSE decided that this was a great way to further their outreach mis-sion. It’s been said that imitation is the finest form of flattery. Con-gratulations to C4 because CCSE recently built a BuildSMART Trailer clone for use throughout San Diego County.

The CCSE trailer, a stunning new 26 foot monster that is towed by a propane truck, recently made its debut at the San Diego Home & Garden Show. Over the next 12 months, the CCSE trailer will travel to events attended by over 500,000 people, including the Miramar Air Show and the San Diego County Del Mar Fair.

Our mission continues to spread as a result of our efforts. Here’s hop-ing more BuildSMART Clones will show up in other regions. It appears C4 has starting something that will hopefully continue to spread. C4

Emerging Professionals Leadership AcademyKirsten Adair, LEED APIn April of this year, 43 Emerging Professionals were selected from chapters around the country as well as four countries outside the U.S. to participate in the first ever Emerging Professionals Leadership Academy. The goal of the Leader-ship Academy was to empower Emerging Professionals to become more effective leaders in their chap-ters and create a stronger network within USGBC. In this six month long program, each Academy participant is responsible for taking on a specific project in their chapter that would challenge them as lead-ers and benefit their local chapter.

In July, participants of the Leadership Academy met in Pine Mountain, Georgia for the Emerg-ing Professionals Studio, held in conjunction with USGBC’s Mid-

Year Meeting. The intensive four day retreat was filled with keynote speeches from USGBC found-ers, break-out sessions, visioning charrettes, training sessions, tools to take strategy to action and a fun-spirited competition that raised over $3,000 for Project Haiti.

During the retreat, Emerging Professionals worked to analyze the current state of sustainability and “what’s next” for the USGBC. The group chose to pursue three goals to help advance the mission of USGBC and our local chapters.

1. Developing a clear volunteer leadership path that is un-derstood at all levels of the organization

2. Creating a “50 innovative sto-ries” library depicting how we are moving towards net zero

3. Expanding the Emerging Pro-fessionals Leadership Academy by doubling the number of participants each year

The leadership participants left the studio recharged and ready to infuse their chapters with ideas, a can-do attitude and new leadership skills. Throughout the retreat the theme of “be leaders, not victims” reminded emerging professionals to aim high and go big in setting goals, achieving them and helping chapters be more successful than ever before.

Note: The C4 representative at the Leadership Academy, Kirsten Adair, has chosen to work with C4 leadership to launch a Social Media Campaign and encourage a green building dialog and network in our central coast community. Be sure to look for C4 and BuildSMART on Facebook, LinkedIn and coming soon on Twitter! C4

Net-Zero Strawbale WorkshopPaul Poirier, AIA, LEED APThis past August, USGBC C4 and community volunteers came to-gether with Semmes and Company and Paul Poirier + Associates Archi-tects to participate in a strawbale construction workshop at the new net-zero energy residence of Jane Alexander and John Flanagan, in the Santa Ynez Valley. About thirty volunteers from Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Santa Ynez and Atascadero showed up to learn first-hand from Turko Semmes and Paul Rose about the details of strawbale construction, the nuances of the bale detailing, usage of their vintage hand bale saws, and the properties of the rice straw bales.

Paul Poirier, the project architect, provided a description of the overall sustainable goals for the project. The specific aspects of green design included: orienting the building for solar photovotaics and passive solar heating and cooling, designing an efficient building envelope with icy-nene foam ceiling insulation, using FSC lumber and non toxic finishes, designing an efficient solar sup-ported hydronic heating system in

the building slab, and emphasizing natural daylighting and ventilation. Robert Adams, the landscape archi-tect, described the overall sustain-able landscape plan which includes drought tolerant and native plants that will minimize water for irriga-tion demands, as well as planting

an orchard and raised planter bed garden.

The weather cooperated with us, as it was an unusually pleasant summer day in the valley, and a good time was had by all. Thanks to all who helped out, and we are looking forward to completing this unique residence soon! C4

the first LEED Gold certified mu-nicipal project in Ventura County.

KDG (Los Angeles) was the Architect of Record for this project, and also provided in-house LEED consultation for the City during the design and construction phases. KDG’s Engineers that assisted with LEED design and construction oversight included The Sullivan Partnership (Glendale) for me-chanical and plumbing engineer-ing; and Pacific Engineers Group (North Hollywood) for electrical engineering. The landscaping and irrigation was designed by the City of Simi Valley. The Commission-ing Authority for the project was Architectural Energy Corporation (San Francisco), and the General Contractor was SBS Corporation (Westlake Village).

The office expansion project includes a 1,104 SF addition to an existing 2,811 SF structure. Because the building is situated up against a sloped hillside and the addition filled in the original overhanging structure on two sides, the expansion created some design challenges. However, the design team was able to salvage over 95% of the building structural system and 56% of the building non-structural components. During the 11 month construction period, the General Contractor was able to recycle nearly 97% of the construc-tion waste.

The City of Simi Valley is commit-ted to integrating water conserva-tion measures throughout all of their City facilities. For this project, the design team integrated native and/or drought tolerant plants reduced landscape water usage by 57%. Additionally, new low-flush toilets, valves, and fixture aerators all contributed to a building water use reduction of 42%.

The mechanical design included a spilt system with new efficient air handlers and heat pump units that replaced the outdated equipment. Each of the work spaces have per-sonal temperature control points for occupied and un-occupied periods, and variable air volume (VAV) terminal boxes. High performance, tinted exterior glazing, and batten

insulation from recycled blue jeans also helped contribute to this energy efficient system. These materi-als, combined with new T-8 high efficiency florescent light fixtures and personal lighting controls at each work station resulted in a energy savings of 25%. The efficient lighting system has also contributed to a reduction of light pollution from the building and increased nighttime visibility. High effi-ciency MERV filters and entrance mats have been installed to help keep particulates from circulating throughout the building interior and mechanical system. All of these measures help provide a more comfortable and healthier work environment for the Simi Valley Transit (SVT) staff.

The sustainable materials incor-porated into the design include marmoleum flooring made from linseed oils, Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood from sustainable harvested forests, and carpeting, paints, and other materi-als that have very low levels of vola-tile organic compounds (VOC’s). Similarly, the new cabinetry has no harmful amounts of urea formalde-hyde in the resins.

The City of Simi Valley and KDG remain committed to providing sustainable designs for all projects. A close collaboration between the City, Architect, Engineers, and contractors has helped attain this goal by implementing measures that reduced the carbon footprint of the City of Simi Valley. C4

daily basis, at times feeling like the whole world is stuck in quicksand. McLennan’s anecdote is tied to an analogy from the philosopher, Lao Tzu and titled, WU WEI AND WATERY PERFECTION wisdom that “Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.” Using nature as our guide, water is “is formless, never forcing its own shape upon other substances and always traveling along the most efficient path. As conditions change, it has the ability to adjust its physical structure from liquid, to gas or solid. Always in balance, water forever finds its own level state.”

Other inspirational lessons are sprinkled throughout the book and offered up as GWERSI, or a series of short succinct lessons. Here are a couple of favorites:

GWERSI XXVSpending too much time ponder-ing how something should be accomplished

Can be as destructive as spending too little.

The systems we use are not the result.

Therefore, spend the majority of your energy

On the actual effort

Rather than the approach to the effort.

GWERSI XXVIIf a given approach is not work-ing, then change it.

If it is only working somewhat, then tweak it.

USGBC-C4 is pleased to be host-ing Jason McLennan in San Luis Obispo on Friday, October 14th as a keynote speaker in conjunction with the Bioneer’s Conference.

Everyone is invited to a wine and cheese reception prior to the key-note, and a book signing afterward. For more information or to register go to: www.usgbcc4.org C4
