Claicut formally known as Kozhikode, is a major city in the state of Kerala and is located at the Malabar Coast. Due to its favourable location the city was and still is the hub of trade. It has been trading spices with Chinese, Arabs, Jews, Phoenicians, Dutch, and Portuguese from centuries. The city is also known as the Gateway of Kerala, as it is the city that greets the foreign national traders and merchants. The city takes pride in being the first city in the country where Vasco da Gama put his foot in 1498. He landed on the Kappad beach which is 18 km from the city's centre.

How to reach Calicut

When someone is about to visit a city/town, travelling is a thing that always concerns him/her. The good thing about Calicut is that it is very well connected to all major cities and states of the country. If you are to visit Calicut in time arriving soon, then following information may come handy to you.

Arriving Calicut by plane ­

The city has its own International Airport and many national and international flights arrive at the airport. This airport is very well connected to Mumbai by daily flights offered by Jet Airways, Indian Airlines, and Air India. These are also the airlines that offer cheapest airfare. Besides Mumbai there are direct flights from Trivandrum, Coimbatore, Chennai, and Bangalore. Mumbai being the closest city to Calicut, takes the least time to complete the journey, whereas the Delhi to Calicut flight and flights from Chennai take the longest. If in case you are having problems to get direct flights to the city, then a good alternative is to land at Mumbai International Airport and then take train or flight routes.

Arriving Calicut by train ­

Besides flights, trains are the fastest ways to reach the city. The Kozhikode Railway Station connects the city to all states of India. Although getting the seats confirmed is an easy affair, but during festive seasons, it does gets difficult. All reservations can be done on the Indian Railways official website. 

There are a handful of direct trains from Mumbai to Calicut travelling via the beautiful Konkan Railway route. Typically it takes around 24 hr to cover the distance by Mumbai to Calicut trains. Besides that there are 4 direct trains from Chennai, Cochin, and Trivandrum.

Arriving by road routes ­ 

The city is also well connected to all of its neighbouring cities and states by road routes. If you are visiting the town from Mumbai or Bangalore, then road trips are actually fun. There are several direct buses running from Thiruvananthapuram, Mangalore, Kochi, Chennai, Bangalore, and Coimbatore towards Calicut. The distance between Mumbai and Calicut is 918 km and ideally takes around 20 hr to complete the journey.
