Centre City Citizen Perception Survey 2011
BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY
Survey Background
Ten core neighbourhoods comprised of Chinatown, Connaught Centre, Downtown, EastVictoria Crossing, East Village, Eau Claire, Stampede Park, Victoria Crossing Centre, WestConnaught and the West End make up the heart of the city of Calgary and collectively
encompass the target neighbourhoods for the Centre City Plan.
The City of Calgarys Centre City Plans vision is to make Centre City Calgary, a place forbusiness (right now over 159,000 Calgarians work in the Centre City sector) and to develop itinto an urban living environment encompassing arts, culture, recreation, tourism andentertainment to enhance Centre City for residents, visitors and businesses alike.
To do this, plans have been implemented to enhance safety by increasing and targeting
City of Calgary police and bylaw officers; improving transportation to and from the core andenhancing the quality of life and beautifying the area through the redevelopment of parksand the enlargement of green spaces. Certainly, the expected increase in Centre Cityresidents in the next decade, up as much as 50% from 33, 574, implies that this holistic visionfor the heart of Calgary is being realized.
The need to develop solid benchmarks based on citizen views and perceptions is essential to
ensuring the Centre City Plan is executed successfully. This was achieved in 2009 inpartnership with Ipsos Reid. After several initiatives aimed at addressing citizen concerns, TheCitys Centre City team is now re-engaging citizens to assess progress against the establishedbenchmarks.

Survey Methodology
A telephone survey was conducted with a randomly selected sample of 1,000 Calgariansaged 18 years and older between October 27th and November 8th, 2011.
Sampling quotas were established to ensure that a large enough representation ofindividuals living in three key target groups was interviewed. Those groups include:
Sampling Quota #1 Residents who live in the Centre City: A total of 336 telephone
interviews were conducted with residents of the Centre City. Residents will live within thefollowing FSAs: T3C, T2R, T2P, T2G. Results based on a sample size of 336 would be accurateto within 5.6 percentage points, nineteen times out of twenty.
Sampling Quota #2 Residents who work in the Centre and live elsewhere in Calgary: A totalof 333 interviews were conducted with residents who work in the Centre and live elsewherein Calgary. Results based on a sample size of 333 would be accurate to within 5.6percentage points, nineteen times out of twenty.
Sampling Quota #3 Residents who neither work nor live in the Centre City: A total of 334interviews were conducted with residents who neither work nor live in the Centre City. Resultsbased on a sample size of 334 would be accurate to within 5.6 percentage points, nineteen times out of twenty.
The margin of error for the total sample of 1,003 is 3.1 percentage points, nineteen times
out of twenty.
The final data were weighted to ensure the overall samples quadrant and age/gendercomposition reflects that of the actual Calgary population aged 18 or older according to
