¿Qué significado tienen las tierras silvestres para la humanidad?, ¿qué importancia conlleva en estos mo-mentos tan decisivos su permanecía?

En los espacios naturales, aquellos donde el hombre industrial no ha dejado huella, podemos redes-cubrir nuestro pasado, contemplar el presente y vislumbrar el futuro.

La especie humana vivió y evolucionó por cientos de miles de años en un mundo totalmente sil-vestre. Quienes somos ahora físicamente se lo debemos a ese medio ambiente original. En ese viaje a lolargo del tiempo, los recursos naturales y la biodiversidad nos permitieron sustentar culturas y civiliza-ciones. Hoy el gran abanico de oportunidades que trae bienestar a nuestras sociedades depende de quelos sistemas ecológicos del planeta prevalezcan saludables.

Por ello, en Transcontinental creemos que para garantizar nuestra propia permanencia es funda-mental trabajar conjuntamente para encontrar modelos de uso de los recursos naturales de una manera sustentable. WILD9, el noveno Congreso Mundial de Tierras Silvestres, nos presenta esa oportunidad.Éste llega a América Latina, y en particular a México por primera vez, gracias a un aliado nuestro, Unidospara la Conservación (UPC), organización mexicana con la que hemos colaborado desde hace 20 años,en campañas de comunicación con temas sobre biodiversidad y espacios silvestres.

Unidos para la Conservación ha sido seleccionado por The Wild Foundation, organización inter-nacional promotora del congreso, como su aliado local en esta iniciativa, misma que Transcontinental ha decidido apoyar por medio de la impresión y donación de este calendario y otras publicaciones similares.

Distinguidos delegados, este calendario conmemorativo de WILD9que tienen en sus manos es ya una tradición entreUPCy nuestra empresa, donde hemos buscado concientizar a la sociedad mediantediversos impresos, usando la fuerza de las imágenes fotográficas como un primer paso para reencon-trarnos con nuestras raíces naturales ancestrales.

El Congreso Mundial de Tierras Silvestres (World Wildlife Congress o WWC) fue con-cebido en las tierras silvestres de África, luego nació en Johannesburgo en 1977, y cre-ció a medida que fue convocado en Australia, Escocia,EE.UU.(Colorado), Noruega,India, Sudáfrica yEE.UU.(Alaska). Gracias a la dedicación y al compromiso de mu-chas miles de personas, organizaciones y gobiernos, el Congreso ha tenido un grannúmero de logros prácticos y momentos inspiradores a lo largo de su camino por elmundo. WILD9constituye una nueva etapa del Congreso Mundial de Tierras Sil-vestres en la que se lanza el concepto detierras silvestres en un idioma, una cultura y una región nuevas. A medida que hemos venido trabajando su realización con la colaboración y la buena voluntad de muchosaliados, hay algo que ha quedado clarísimo: debido al ritmo cada vez más acelerado del cambio climático,aunado a una población y a una demanda de los consumidores ambos en rápido crecimiento, nunca anteshabía habido un momento más importante para proteger lo silvestre que el actual, por motivos nunca antestan claros y presentes como los que ahora enfrentamos. Desde luego que sí tiene sentido, y sí es lo “correc-to”…pero también es necesario. La naturaleza silvestre nos sirve y nos puede salvar a todos si solamente per-mitimos que viva, funcione y evolucione.

The World Wilderness Congress (WWC) was conceived in the African wilderness, theborn in Johannesburg in 1977, and grew up as it convened in Australia, Scotland(Colorado), Norway, India, South Africa, andUSA(Alaska). Through the dedication andcommitment of many thousands of people, organizations, and governments, the Chas achieved many practical accomplishments and inspirational moments along thal trail.WILD9is a new phase for the World Wilderness Congress as we introduce winess astierras silvestres in a new language, culture, and region. As we do so, workin

with the collaboration and goodwill of very many partners to make it happen, one thing is very cleescalating pace of climate change, coupled with booming population and consumer demand, there hbeen a more important time to protect wilderness than now, with never more clear and present reaare facing us now. Yes, it certainly makes sense, and it is the “right” thing to do… but it is also Wild nature serves us all and can save us all, if we simply allow it to live, work, and evolve.

El hombre es un animal que basa sus decisiones en gran medida en su evaluación visual. La fotografía comomedio le ha permitido llegar a un conocimiento más profundo del mundo en el que vive. Hoy sería impen-sable comunicarnos sin el uso de esta valiosa herramienta ya que las imágenes fotográficas ilustran día a día prácticamente todos los medios impresos y electrónicos.

En mi trabajo como conservacionista encuentro que uno de los retos más grandes que enfrentamos losfotógrafos es lograr una imagen que capture el espíritu “silvestre” de un espacio natural. ¿Cómo transmitirvisualmente la gran sensación de soledad de un desierto o el frío seco de un cielo abierto en la alta mon-taña?, ¿cómo sugerir gráficamente el sonido melódico de un ave en cortejo o cómo retratar la diversidad de

olores de un bosque lluvioso?Los territorios silvestres evocan sentimientos muy diferentes en cada ser humano, pero nos pueden uniren un mismo objetivo. Por ello, decidimos destinar los calendarios de Unidos para la Conservación/Trans-continental 2010-2011 para celebrar a WILD9, como una edición conmemorativa y exclusiva de este con-greso. Con este fin, invitamos a 30 creadores de imágenes de la Liga Internacional de Fotógrafos de la Con-servación, seleccionados por su habilidad al plasmar en repetidas ocasiones la esencia silvestre de las regionesque han documentado.

Este calendario es un ejemplo del llamado que WILD9presenta a la comunidad internacional; en esta ocasión, el mensaje de los fotógrafos como embajadores de las tierras silvestres es de gran belleza, pero tam-bién, su compromiso individual por la conservación del planeta es un ejemplo a seguir.

Mi esposa Patricia me ha acompañado en mi búsqueda por capturar fotográficamente el espíritu de losilvestre. Muchas han sido las montañas y las horas de frío que hemos compartido juntos. Por su granpaciencia y apoyo quise usar una de sus fotografías para acompañar esta carta. La imagen fue el resultadode un encuentro entre varios amigos fotógrafos y esta pareja de coyotes que dormía no lejos de nosotros.Después de unos minutos de compartir la misma escena, me moví unos metros. De pronto, uno de los co-yotes se levantó; mi ángulo no era muy limpio. Afortunadamente Patricia capturó el momento en el queambos coyotes aúllan, imagen memorable en la que casi podemos escuchar su llamado silvestre.

Man is an animal whose decisions are largely based on visual assessments. Photography as a medenabled him to gain a deeper knowledge of the world in which he lives. Communication today wiuse of this valuable tool would be unthinkable; every day, photographic images illustrate just aboand electronic media.

In my work as a conservationist, I find that one of the biggest challenges we photographers faducing an image that captures the “wild” spirit of a natural area. How can one visually convey thefeeling of solitude of a desert or the dry chill of an open sky atop a high mountain? How can one ly suggest the melodious sound of a courting bird or portray the variety of smells in a rainforest?

Wilderness evokes very different feelings in each human being, but can bring us together for a pose. This is why we decided to celebrate WILD9 with a commemorative edition exclusive to thiof the 2010-2011 calendars of Unidos para la Conservación/Transcontinental. To this end, we invimage makers from the International League of Conservation Photographers — chosen for their sking time and again the wild essence of the regions they document — to contribute.

This calendar is an example of the appeal WILD9 is making to the international community. Onsion, the message of the photographers as wilderness ambassadors is extremely beautiful, but theircommitment to the conservation of our planet should also serve as a role model.

My wife Patricia has accompanied me on my quest to photographically capture the spirit of thehave shared many mountains and many icy hours. For her wonderful patience and support, I wantone of her photographs to accompany this letter. The image was the result of an encounter between several photographer friends, and a pair of coyotes sleeping not far from us. After some minutes ssame view, I moved a few meters away. Suddenly, one of the coyotes rose up, but my angle was ngood one. Fortunately, Patricia captured the instant when both coyotes began to howl, a memorabthat almost lets us hear the call of the wild.

La Liga Internacional de Fotógrafos de la Conservación (International League of Conser-vation Photographers oiLCP) y quienes la integramos, sentimos que es nuestra obligación y responsabilidad informar, inspirar y comunicar ideas complejas de la manera más sencilla queexiste: mediante recursos visuales. Todos compartimos el sincero compromiso y la responsa-bilidad personal de hacer el máximo esfuerzo a nuestro alcance, a fin de asegurar que nues-tras imágenes tengan utilidad concreta en lo que a conservación se refiere.

No obstante, hay entre nosotros quienes —como el joven fotógrafo cuya hermosa fo-tografía de una cabra montés engalana esta página— tienen el valor de hacer a un lado sus cámaras y ale- jarse del tripie por un tiempo para encargarse de la tarea, a menudo tediosa, pero igualmente indispensa-ble, de asegurar que los objetivos de conservación se hagan realidad. Jaime Rojo, el artista que captó esta imagen, cedió generosamente dos años de su vida y su desarrollo profesional como fotógrafo para dedi-carse a organizar y llevar a efecto la cumbre WILD9, una reunión internacional cuya relevancia para la con-servación sobrepasará, indudablemente, sus logros personales y los de todos nosotros en conjunto. Los fotó-grafos de laiLCPqueremos reconocer su labor de liderazgo y honrar, al mismo tiempo, la devoción y elcompromiso que ha demostrado hacia nuestra profesión. Estoy segura de que su esfuerzo motivará a incon-tables personas y servirá como modelo del tipo de trabajo que el resto de nosotros debemos emprender.
