REPORT FROM LAST MEETING

Speaker: Lynn AldrichOur March speaker, Lynn Aldrich, fascinated the group with her imaginative use ofmaterials, many coming from her shopping excursions to Home Depot. Among her manypieces, she has turned hoses into waves; sponges, brushes, and gloves into coral reefs;gutter downspouts into waterways; sewing thread into light rays; and ink pads into abstractpaintings. Lynn evolved from being a painter to a sculptor and installation artist, pushingback against what was critically acclaimed at the time that she got her MFA at Art Center

in Pasadena. She is currently represented by DENK Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. She has created many public art pieces and her work can be currently seen at thesculpture garden at Agensys, east of Bergamot Art Center; in a group show, "Welcome tothe Dollhouse," at MOCA Design Center in West Hollywood, and at UC Irvine. She isthoughtfully critiquing cultural consumerism as she shops for her materials and assemblesthem. She did include in her comments that among her many successes over the past 30years, she has had discouraging moments, but it is evident that she works very hard at herart practice. She currently lives in Glendale where she has a home studio. She isconstantly working with new materials, finding out how to work with them, to comment onsome aspect of our culture.
