Buster Brown Shoes Neon Sign, 1945. Buster Brown, one o the earli est comic stri p characters, was created byRichard Felton Outcault in 1902. Buster Brown and his dog Tige were licensed by the Brown Shoe Company in1904 and have been their mascots ever since. The neon sign shown was used or point-o-sale advertisementaround 1945. Neon signs enjoyed their peak popula rity during that era, when nearl y 2000 sign shops wereactively producing the gaudy, g lowing displays we’ve come to love.

Mixed Matchbooks, 1945 – 1955. Patent attorney, Joshua Pusey is credited with the invention o the matchbookin 1889. He sold his invention to the Diamond Match Company which rode the wave o cigarette popularity untilits eventual decline began. Diamond rst introduced mass advertising to their matchbooks with Blue RibbonBeer. An immediate success, competitors ollowed quickly and matchbook marketing became ubiquitous by the1920s. Matchbooks provided useul advertising every business, rom a national hotel chain to the corner tavern,could easily aord.

Cigar Bands, 1895 – 1903. During the peak o their popularity, beautiully produced and designed cigar bandsand boxes were produced by cigar manuacturers or brand recognition and di erentiation. The colorul, ornatebands produced in the United States, Cuba and Germany oten considered the most beautiully produced. Earlycollectors oten simply cut slots into notebooks to store their collections. Today, treasured labels are kept inpolypropylene sleeves with acid-ree paper inserts. I t’s estimated there are over 100,000 dierent designs,created during the sought-ater chromolithographic era.

Mexican Hand-Painted Rice Flour Triptychs, 1985. This hand painted, three-dimensional d iorama was createdthrough a collaboration o three di erent Mexican olk ar tists. The individual gures are sculpted rom a mixtureo rice four, water and paste and painted in b right colors. A protective coating o clear lacquer is app lied tohelp keep the color rom ading with age. When complete, the gures are careully arranged in scenes andglued into place. The display case was crated rom pine and hand pain ted with water-based acrylic pa ints.

Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test, 1966. The Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test is a simple but precise methodo measuring the acuity o ind ividual color discrimination. The test is used to identiy persons with normalcolor vision into classes o superior, average and low color discrimina tion. For those with less than norma lcolor vision the test can be used to measure the zones o thei r color conusion. The test shown is romthe mid-1960s. It came in our wooden cases, each with a pair o hinged panels to house—in roughly evenamounts—its 93 pigment caps.

Seine Twine Gauge, 1880. In 1851 James Strat ton Shepard purchased a th read mill and began the making twineor seine nets. Usually long and fa t, seine nets are lined with foats on the top edge and weights along thebottom. Fisherman use them to “ence in” schools o sh by circling the net a round them rom a boat. In 1896,Shepard’s twine earned t he Gold Medal award at the Centennial World’s Fair. The sample thread cards showndisplay various thread counts sold by The Linen Thread Company.

A ew actoids about the rocks in thiscollection rom Quebec: Apatite is used in ertilizer as a source o phosphorus. Mica is a key ingredient in jointcompound or lling seams between gypsum wallboard. Anhydride, when exposed to water, transorms to themore commonly occurring gypsum.

Mixed Pencil Collection, 1960s. Pencils have been around sin ce the mid -1500s. Pencil lead is a mixtureo powdered graphite and clay, with the ratio determining the ha rdness. The sotest is 9B (with less clay)and the hardest is 9H (with more clay). The collection shown, gathered rom junk stores, garage stores,antique ma lls, and fea markets across the Midwest, include samples rom about 1960 to 1980. There aremany penci l collectors across North America with collections o the more than 150 brands and thousandso thousands o pencils with promotional imprints.

Oregon Hardwoods Specimen Tray, 1955. This collection displays branch cross-sections o various trees oundin Oregon. Each year a new ring o growth is produced. The darker areas that can been seen in some o thesamples, is called the heartwood. These heartwood cells lose their ability to conduct water. The resins, gumsand tannins they oten contain create their dark appearance. The lighter areas o each ring is called the sapwood.These cells act as tiny pipelines that draw water and minerals rom the soil and deliver it th roughout the tree.

Blickenderer 6 portable typewriter, 1906. Historians have di cultly citing an exact da te or a si ngle i nventoror the creation o the typewriter. The mechanical writi ng device we think o when we think “ typewriter”was actually an amalgamation o several inventions that evolved almost simultaneously. Although alternativekeyboard layouts have been used the QWERTY layout, estab lished by Sholes & Glidden i n 1874 became thestandard still in use today. The Blickensderer 6, an ea rly portable, introduced in 1906, used a DHIATENSORkeyboard layout, with a QWERTY layout, available on request.

Cardboard Lithograph Toy Soldiers, 1896. A pioneering publ isher who specialized in the color print ing technologieso his era, John McLoughlin Jr. was joined by his younger brother, Edmund, in 1855. McLoughlin Bros., Inc.published a wide variety o chil dren’s books, games, paper dol ls, puzzles, cards, and novelties until the rmwas purchased in 1920 by Milton Bradley. The 50 Soldi ers on Parade game shown (circa 1896) was printedusing the planog raphic process o chromolithog raphy. Each cardboard soldier is tacked onto a tiny woodenblock, making them easy to stand upright.
