Looking to pick up a unique and engrossing hobby? This course in fly fishing is designed for beginners, with no experience required. Through slides, demos, and hands-on exercises, participants will learn about the equipment and techniques for fly fishing in streams, lakes and ponds. Students will also learn some basic aquatic entomology, how to “read” water that holds fish, a bit of game fish identification and biology, and introductory fly casting techniques. Students will have the opportunity to practice their casting skills on grass and on a local farm pond.

She has facilitated dream groups since 1994 and lectured extensively on dreams throughout the U.S. Her “Dreams for Healing” process examines the depths of dreams and the power they possess, the distinct “language” of dreams, and guides learners to put their (night-time) dreams to work in fulfilling their life’s blueprint. Organic foods have comprised one of the fastest growing sectors of the US food industry for over two decades, yet many people are not aware that the roots of the modern organic ag movement date back nearly a century. In this workshop we will explore:• The evolution of organic agriculture

Learn how to make your own delicious sausage in Cal Poly’s new J and G Lau Family Meat Processing Center, home to state-of-the-art facilities for product development. In this workshop, participants will work with resident managers to learn the history and art of making sausage from fresh ingredients – some of which are grown right on campus. Four basic recipes will be taught: breakfast sausage, Italian sausage, linguica and bratwurst. Participants will be given tips on how to create their own recipes and will leave the workshop knowing how to safely prepare sausage at home.

Grains have been called the “staple of humanity” due to their important, historic role in human nutrition and civilization. Unfortunately, many heirloom grain varieties have been lost or taken out of cultivation in modern agriculture. This workshop will include: • An introduction to the vast diversity and cultivation

of heirloom grains

• A discussion with farmer John DeRosier on his role as a grain grower and grain’s historical importance as a local crop

• A demonstration by Chef Maegen Loring of the culinary use of grain in Niner Winery’s beautiful new kitchen facility

Hinduism with its many-armed deities and colorful worship services has the oldest roots of all of the major religions. For centuries, it has drawn westerners toward the “mysterious and mystical orient.” Yet, despite its allure, it is also probably the most misunderstood of all the major religions. Is it really so polytheistic? What is the ultimate wisdom of the East? How does it relate to yoga? This course will explore the roots and meaning of Hinduism, which has become by some accounts the fastest growing religion in America.

Religions are not objects of curiosity to be perused like artifacts in a museum. Rather, they are lived experiences that provide profound meaning for those within them. Our religious traditions have endured for so many years because they have profoundly touched so many lives. The life of Gautama Siddhartha, known as the Buddha in the West, has inspired people for over two millennia. However, he did not reveal a new god or new spiritual worlds but rather a new way to see ourselves and the world around us. His message has been woven through nearly all the cultures of Asia and shifted as it travelled, but it also has relevance to our lives now in America. This course looks at the foundational teachings of Buddhism within their historical context in order to bring alive its message for today.

Chinese Religions | NCR 9643

Before the west had its Plato and Aristotle, the Chinese were contemplating the wisdom of Confucius, Lao Tzu, and the Buddha. Their teachings percolated into every part of Chinese culture and sustained its development well into the 20th century. The genius of Chinese religions has been their ability to stand in productive tension with one another, forging a religious worldview that is both unified and diverse. This course examines the Chinese worldview and ponders its future in the rapidly-developing China of today.

Forensic science uses the scientific method of gathering information and examining it to determine what happened in a situation. We will investigate forensic technology, forensic reconstruction, print identification, chemistry, mathematics, and anthropology through a series of inquiry-based activities. Campers will learn how to lift and test fingerprints, use chemistry to identify mystery substances, and analyze chromatography. Campers will form teams to analyze their own scientific questions and reach their own conclusions based on the evidence discovered. The week will close with an imaginary crime scene investigation brought to you by local law enforcement officers.

Campers will also enjoy campus exploration activities, touring real research laboratories, pizza, bowling, the famous UN-magic show, and a family showcase to show off the fun activities from the week.
