A Job Within A Job – Sasol UO&I

Early on in the Sasol – Lake Charles Chemicals Project planning stages, Cajun leadership decided to subsect

the mega-project into four major parts. The Sasol project consists of Cracker - Unit 50, LL – Units 60/63, Underground Piping and UO&I. Included in UO&I are 20 separate units. The highlight of these units is Area 80, a 13 bay, 7,400 CY cooling tower with a basin 630’ x 130’. An aggressive schedule for the cooling tower was a requirement by the client. The team led by Steve Henderson and Scotty Hebert, successfully planned and executed ahead of schedule and an under-budget product for the client. The UO&I area is led by Site Manager Charlie Granata, Project Superintendent Martin Solis and Safety Manager Logan Zeferjahn. They have done an excellent job juggling many different clients’ needs, along with keeping the ever-changing and complicated areas safe and productive for our team.

Superintendent Jeff Amos and Assistant Project Manager Randy Mace lead Boiler – Unit 53, a large unit which just set its three modular boiler structures on Cajun poured foundations without incident. Ted Thomas and Brock Moore run Area 52/55 – Utilities encompassing four large sumps, five compressors and four tanks. Andrew Bradley is leading Cajun’s efforts in Unit 20, both the unit itself and a very large 170’ x 150’ deluge sump. Oscar Giron will be leading the 24 tank - Alcohol Storage Unit 86.

Assistant Project Managers Brock Moore, Randy Mace, Andrew Bradley and Oscar Giron, have really stepped up to the plate and have worked effectively in overcoming issues, managing progress, safety, cost and schedule. Cajun is proud of each one of these men as they grow every day in their abilities.

Cajun would like to thank all of these managers and, more importantly, every craft professional in

the UO&I area for leading the way on the Sasol – Lake Charles Chemicals Project. Their exemplary efforts have convinced the client to award Cajun more work areas. This is due to the safe work practices, productivity, quality of work and the “can do” attitude of the Cajun UO&I Team.

On January 28, 2016, Cajun IDC kicked off the inaugural classes of its “Site Leader U” program. The program name has

dual meaning, with the “U” representing both the individual and the University style training of the participant’s experience. The program was developed with the purpose of training and educating current and future project site leaders on the key leadership skills and business acumen needed to successfully lead projects. It is available from construction manager level to general foremen level personnel. The program consists of 11 days (88 hours) of training over the course of 8 months.

The curriculum includes training on leadership, project management, estimating, business development, work force development, QA/QC management, ethics, supervisory indoctrination training, human resources management, safety management and three NCCER Certifications in Leadership, Project Supervision and Project Management. The course also includes a full day site visit to the Sasol Project. Each subject is taught by a different individual that specializes on the topic, with several courses being taught by experts from outside the company.

Participants of this class are required to submit an application for executive review and are hand selected to participate based on their desire to become a better leader on our project sites. The participants in the inaugural Site Leader U class are Shannon Boggs, Tony Cavalier, Mark Deville, Toby Guillory, Brandon Ranches and Chance Toups. We are very proud of these men and applaud their efforts to become better leaders within the Cajun organization.

The feedback received from the participants has been overwhelmingly positive and as a result we anticipate beginning a second Site Leader U class in early summer 2016. Email notices for applications will be going out to our project sites over the next few months.

Cajun Looks Forward to Building Houston

On January 13, 2016, representatives from Cajun Industries, Cajun Constructors and Cajun IDC met

with Dr. Melissa Botkin. Dr. Botkin is the Coordinator for Career and Technical Education at Galena Park ISD as part of the Construction Maintenance and Education Foundation. Cajun has entered into a partnership with the two High Schools in the ISD with goals of providing students with the opportunity to explore the many facets of the construction industry and the career opportunities available. This partnership will also provide CTE teachers with resources and new connections to current happenings in the Industry.

In addition, it will provide them with opportunities to meet industry leaders and become aware of the numerous job opportunities for their students. Galena Park ISD is used to assess industry craft needs and deliver NCCER curriculum in heavy equipment operations, carpentry and welding.

Cajun is also participating in the Construction Careers Youth Committee (CCYC) which was formed in 2006 as a joint effort between Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), Construction & Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF) and Houston Business Roundtable (HBR). The mission of the Construction

Careers Youth Committee is to promote and support construction industry workforce education in public schools.

Cajun Industries, LLC has a total of 10 high school partners in the Baton Rouge and Houston areas.

Construction Industry Advisory Council

In January of 2016, Cajun IDC became a

member of the Texas A&M Construction

Industry Advisory Council (CIAC). Joining

CIAC will give Cajun access to directly impact

the Construction Science Department,

influence research and studies, gain greater

access to students seeking internships and

full time positions, a reserved position in two

career fairs, current employment statistics

and the opportunity to speak during select

construction management classes.

The majority of universities in Texas focus on

commercial construction. Joining CIAC will

give Cajun the opportunity to increase the

industrial footprint at Texas A&M, and in the

process, become a leader in the field.

In early February, Project Coordinators

Craig Kaspar, Taylor Hill and I attended the

CIAC Spring Construction Science Career

Fair. During this event, several students let

us know they became interested in Cajun

through the direction of the professor in

charge of CIAC. After the two day event, we

were able to conduct interviews with several

students seeking internships, and full time

employment. Later this semester, Cajun

will attend the bi-annual CIAC meeting,

as well as the Spring CIAC Company Day.

During Company Day, Cajun will be able to

showcase everything we, and the industrial

industry as a whole, have to offer, as well

as attend construction science classes

currently scheduled.

Crane Safety

As we approached the end of 2015, a need was identified to provide our office and field staff with

more education and training on crane safety. With the help of Cajun Equipment Services President, Mike Bates and Cajun Constructors’ Industrial Operations Divisional Trainer, Sherri Pearson, we were able to connect with H&E Equipment Services to identify a course agenda that would meet our needs. In January, our team in Houston, including Cajun Constructors and Cajun IDC sent the first two groups of Cajun employees to attend the H&E Hydraulic Crane Safety Class.

The training was scheduled with the intent to give our office staff (estimators, project managers, etc.) better information on topics such as how to properly size and

select a crane during the planning and estimating phase before work begins.

The course material was designed to achieve these goals by providing a more detailed “nuts and bolts” version of crane training rather than just a high level overview of the basics. The classroom portion of the course included discussion on the history and evolution of hydraulic cranes, detailed crane safety, operation and inspection, OSHA and ANSI regulations, as well as information on crane attachments and hardware. Attendees were also taught how to interpret crane load charts, determine mat sizes, figure weight deductions and calculate crane capacity based on different operating variables (boom length, boom angle and load radius).

Following the classroom instruction, each participant was given the opportunity to actually operate a hydraulic crane. This hands on experience allowed each individual the opportunity to apply what was learned earlier in the day and was very effective in enforcing the key points of the class.

Following the class, feedback was unanimously positive and many of the students stated that they left not only with a new perspective and appreciation for crane safety, but also the knowledge and understanding to apply the information that was presented.

Sasol Unit 50

Cajun’s presence on Sasol’s future Cracker Unit (Unit 050) has been widely known from all around Westlake and Lake

Charles. I find myself in local grocery stores, restaurants, shopping centers, etc. overhearing and being asked about the “Sasol Project” and the amount of equipment, dirt, pipe, concrete and people on the job. Hearing about the Sasol Project is impressive, but, there is no comparison to being present on the jobsite. The drone visuals, pictures and conversations that occur are wonderful representations but have no comparison to the actual work that takes place when you can personally see the craftsmen working in the field, with smiles on their faces, as they give this job their professional attention.

From the beginning, Cajun’s team hit the ground running, led by Earthwork Superintendent Albert Mott and his right hand man, General Foreman Alonzo England by unleashing a fury of Komatsu trackhoes that tore into the dirt and bath tubbed out over 250,000 CY of dirt. As the earth was being brought to the engineer’s

desired elevation, Project Manager Adam Zayor and Site Superintendent Darin Benoit began diligently and precisely scheduling and planning what will soon become a 70,000 CY concrete universe.

Cajun has battled massive rain and thunderstorms that stole 20 working days. Working days are defined as days not worked but also not made up. Despite the weather and site flooding adversities, Cajun’s Concrete Superintendent Henry Harris and General Foremen Patrick Cox and Marvin Harris have managed to pour to date 52,472 CY of structural concrete. Area Superintendent David Stroud and General Foreman Troy Matte’s team have completed 18 out of 20 massive sumps and are on schedule to finish the remaining two. Area Superintendent Corey Duet and General Foreman Warren Boersma’s team were responsible for completing Sub Areas 70 and 71 as well as building one of the largest compressor decks in Cajun’s history, and are on schedule to complete two more. General

Foreman James McDonald, responsible for Sub Areas 74 and 75, and Area Superintendent Toby Thomas, responsible for Sub Areas 72 and 73, combined, have constructed and poured more than 150 individual foundations. Project Superintendents Merlin Comeaux, Chris Reed, David Humphries, Terry Darbonne and George Bullock have installed and tested over 8,875 LF of underground pipe (ranging from 72” cooling water, 18” firewater, 24” RCP, to 8” oily water pipe). Last but not least, we cannot forget the backbones of our team, Cajun’s Safety, Rod Buster, Quality Control, Rigging, Tool Room and Survey crews, led by the cool, calm and collected Superintendent Scott Carpenter followed by lead Quality Controls Tech Milton Bartholomew, Crane General Foreman John Keith, Tool Room General Foreman Tommy Washington, Safety Manager Johnny Cowart and Survey Party Chief Kevin DiMartino.

Cajun’s Unit 050 Team has managed to achieve a cumulative 1.17 performance factor. Even while losing 20 working days to weather delays Cajun

The Cajun Connection | 1st Quarter 2016 | 9

has still managed to stay ahead of schedule in all disciplines including: concrete by 5%, OW Pipe by 7%, FW Pipe by 4% and cooling water 100 %. Project Manager, Adam Zayor stated, “Our managers and foremen spend a relatively large and consistent portion of time planning, coordinating and communicating. This is one of the major reasons that have led to our success.” Cajun management meets every day at 6:00 AM for a plan of day gathering, then at 11:00 AM for a concrete coordination session and once more at 2:00 PM for an end of day coordination meeting. All superintendents conduct daily planning meetings in the field with their foremen to set goals and keep them informed of any pertinent changes. Unit 050 Site Manager, Darin Benoit, stated, “There is no way we would have been this successful if we would not have implemented these planning and communication sessions, they have been extremely helpful.”

However, nothing would be standing if it weren’t for the dedicated men and women who spend their days unloading and installing rebar, building and wrecking formwork, flagging and directing equipment, and excavating and backfilling while always remaining aware of safety. It’s because of these tremendous efforts that Cajun is successful. These accomplishments would not have been possible without our outstanding field supervisors and craft personnel that dedicate themselves day in and day out to the tasks at hand. They have expended in excess of 1,033,209 safe man hours to date and we couldn’t be more proud.

The project still has ample work to be completed including; 6,246 CY of medium and small size structural foundations 12,293 LF of underground pipe, 80,000 CY of backfill and 12,000 CY of area paving. Cajun is confident that our team members will continue to work safely until the last man hours are spent on this project and it is turned over to Sasol.

Cajun’s Unit 50 supervisors would like to thank our families and our personnel’s families for the love and support they continue to show us through this demanding time and we would like to personally thank our craft personnel for their hard work, dedication and sacrifices they

make for this project and to Sasol. We ask God to continue to watch over and bless our families and thank him for giving us the opportunity to provide for them. We send a special thanks to the following managing personnel whose planning, time, dedication, teamwork and commitment made this all possible: Form Specialist Manager Jim Mejeur, Overall Site Manager Kevin Rodrigue, Senior Construction Manager Tim Willis and Senior Project Manager Joey Goscha.
