It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the Fourteenth International Water Technology Conference. This conference has already established itself as a key event in which the most influential researchers in the different Water-related fields and regulators from related governmental bodies and firms can come together to exchange insights and to influence each others' agendas.

Such a dialogue has never been more important. We live in a world in which water resources are being depleted rapidly and in an increasingly threatening form. Over the past few years, the problem is manifested in the shortage, contamination of available water resources and incompatible reuse of wastewater resources.

The value of this conference lies in the opportunity it provides for an in-depth dialogue between regulators and the industry. It will provide opportunities for water quality professionals engaged in research, extension, and education to share knowledge and ideas, to identify and update emerging issues, and to network with related partner organizations.

I would like to see much more of this kind of collaboration. This is an opportunity for us all to come up with a sufficient vision of our current needs and future demand of water management technologies in the Arab region and the world. It is our work which will ultimately impact regulated firms. So, it is your chance to influence, please seize the opportunity to the full.

The Pyramids and the Sphinx

You won't want to miss one of Egypt's top attractions, the last surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Pyramid of Giza. There are in fact three main pyramids in Giza; the Great Pyramid of Khufu (or Cheops), The Pyramid of Kafhre and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaura. Each Pyramid is a tomb to a different King of Egypt. In front of the pyramids lies the Sphinx, or Abu al-Hol in Arabic, "Father of Terror". Carved out of a single block of stone, this enormous cat-like sculpture has mesmerized millions of visitors.

Sound and Light Show

A sound and light show centered around the Sphinx is a nightly occurrence. Although it may sound too touristy for some, everyone ends up learning some interesting facts about the Pyramids and shows are in several different languages. Khan EL Khalili Bazaar

It is famous for its unusual, typically oriental souvenirs, and handmade crafts. The Medieval atmospheres of this traditional market; together with the labyrinth layout of the streets; gives visitors o lot of pleasure and a glimpse into what medieval markets once were like.

Every visitor can take the opportunity to safely enjoy the walk through the narrow streets of Khan El-Khalili.

The Citadel of Saladin (EL-Qala)

It is located on a high hill that overlooks the old city of Cairo. Saladin built this fortress to protect the old city of Cairo, and it mainly consists of enclosure walls and watchtowers, as well as many, many gates! As every 120m there are gates into the Citadel that were built at various times in history. The architectural plan of the fortress resembles many of the ones that were built in Syria and Palestine at the time of the Crusades. Later on, the Citadel became a major training centre for the Egyptian army.

Egypt is rich with many museums; in fact there are more than 34 museums all over Egypt. They usually have collections from a specific period, or part of the Ancient Egyptian history. The Open Air-Museum of Memphis

The Open Air Museum at Memphis is one of the “must see” sites in Egypt! The trip from Cairo only takes 45 minutes, it is only 20Km to the south, and the entrance fee is 21LE.

Water Technology Association is a non-governmental Association no. 1623 for 2004. It was established by a panel of experts and university professors. The aims of this association are to:

1. highlight the importance of water issue both socially and economically at the local, national and international levels.

2. highlight the importance of preserving water and its resources. 3. support and spread out modem technology concerning water treatment and

desalination. 4. organize training courses in the field of water management and treatment. 5. organize scientific meetings which aim to raise the awareness of people

concerning the water issue and its dimensions. 6. conduct research studies and projects in the field of' preserving the aquatic

resources and water management. The first activity of this association was participating in the organization of the 8th International Conference for Water Technology. The association aims at organizing a number of training courses in the fie1d of protecting aquatic resources against pollution, the technology of water desalination and water treatment.
