Winter School in the Tropics

3 – 7 August 2009

Tanks Arts Centre

Reclining Nude – Fu Hong

ARTescape 2009 is fast

approaching, 3 – 7 August is only a few months away now. So we’re gearing up for a very successful “Winter School in the Tropics.” Of our 13 tutors on offer, three classes are already fully booked – Garry Duncan, Fu Hong and Judy Pomroy. Plus many of the other classes are more than half booked, so if you’re hoping to participate this year, I’d suggest you enrol now or you’ll miss out on your preferred tutor. And what better way to spend a week doing art – it doesn’t matter whether you’re a beginner or a professional artist; there is always another technique or skill to learn from the best in the business.

Cairns Craft Centre will be providing our On-Site Store and will cater to all your art material needs. They’ll also have some great discounts during the event. But don’t forget, you can also pre-order or obtain your supplies from Cairns Drawing Supplies and The Art Barn. We also take this opportunity to thank all three stores for their continuing support of ARTescape.

And of course the Tanks Arts Centre is a truly unique venue as part of the Cairns Botanic Cultural Precinct. Adjacent to the Botanical Gardens and Centenary Lakes, our location lends itself to inspire your creative and artistic endeavours

- an opportunity to build upon your individual style.

Even though ARTescape is structured as a 5-day program, we are able to offer limited placements for 2 or 3-day workshops to comply with several requests.

Students will enjoy a BBQ on the Tuesday night and a wine and cheese evening on Friday with an exhibition of their accomplished works.

Don’t miss out – book early!

To secure your preferred tutor, bookings will ONLY be accepted with an Enrolment Form (download from the website or photocopy from the Booklet) and a non-refundable deposit of $150.00. It’s first in, first served. To assist with model fees refer to each tutor for course costs.

Morning and afternoon teas are provided, though delicious salad lunches can be pre-ordered for an extra $50, or you are welcome to bring your own – a microwave will be available.

Mr. Pedantic’s Pertinent Painty Points.

Point No.13 GALLERIES Hello again folks. And Happy Mothers Day if you are one. I’ve been away down south on a quest for a new gallery to supply. Ive been asked “how do you approach a gallery to hang your work ?”. Wearing a kilt and singing shes got a luverly bunch of coconuts was one idea I probably should have thought through. No matter. It seems approaching a Gallery is seen as a lot like auditioning for Australian Idol. But no need to genuflect or bring chocolates. Its just a business. Your artwork is a product like any other, and the deal you strike with a gallery should be mutually beneficial, like any other. The owner, (who likes to be called a “Director) has usually had previous experience in sales and decided that selling paintings sounds like a nice way to spend a day. Where else do you get to acquire free merchandise with limitless retail value, with no outlay beyond the rent? Money for Jam and instant status I’d say! Woo-Hooooo!! Well not quite. A “Director” must build a client base, advertise, promote, employ, hang and re-hang work repeatedly and try and present a well balanced, well lit space to display the work without colours clashing or the Flung Shoe being out of whack. (its some Asian thing about being able to throw a shoe through a gallery without hitting the pottery). Whatever. Anyway…If you get too caught up in thinking you need to impress a “Director” and plea for their favour, you make a grave mistake, because by doing so you instantly put them in the position of power and they will gladly rise to the occasion by turning into some “let them eat cake” Cruella De’Ville character. Your first question is to ask yourself “Would my work fit in this Gallery?” You are also a business person in this deal. You are “letting them” hang your work, not begging for help. Your second question should be “What are you offering me in exchange?” (see Directors task list above)

If they aren’t offering anything but wallspace,….. keep walking. The key words here are “Mutually Beneficial”. If they are going to take their 50% cut they had better be wearing the kilt and singing coconuts. OR assuring you of their commitment to “Directing” your career. Take charge of your business as an artist. Recognise your worth as someone who has invested time, money and effort into their work. Bon Chance! G r e g D w y e r 09. ☺

Volunteering for your Art Society I’ve been a member of the Cairns Art Society since July last year, when I participated in 2008 ARTescape at the Tanks. There were three ladies in my group who had “something” to do with the Art Society – Helen (and her mum, Pat), Ingrid and Sharon – and over the week that we worked together, I got a sense of how much these ladies were actually doing to help the event and forthcoming events run smoothly. I attended a few meetings, got to know a few more people and soon realised that even though the society has around 300 members, the same dozen or so people seem to do everything. When the call went out for people to help with the organisation of the 2009 ARTescape, I put my hand up. I also volunteered to coordinate the roster for the Artists of the North exhibition. I spent about 6 hours collating the roster from the entry forms, have been to the Tanks four or five times and I spend about half an hour per day shuffling the roster and contacting volunteers to ensure they’re going to be there on the day. So far it’s gone quite well, and whenever I put out a call for help I get lots of support. I’ve met more people than I can count, and I’m happy to have relieved the burden from those who are already putting in many, many hours of their own time. I am a new artist and am very grateful for the opportunities members are given to get their work out there and to improve their skills. The DFO gallery, Artists of the North Exhibition, the Open Art Exhibition and ARTescape are wonderful events and they are all organised solely by volunteers, apart from

small administration grants that don’t begin to cover the time allocated. During my conversations with members over the past few weeks, I’ve had a few people preface a comment or query with: “While I’ve got someone from the Art Society …” Well, we are all “someone from the Art Society”. It’s very rewarding to help, you get to meet a lot of wonderful people, and I strongly encourage you to put your hand up. Every little bit helps. Dayle Jordan

Winter in the Tropics Painting Workshop With Geoff Dupree Sunday 28 June to Sunday 05 July 2009 The Workshop will present a sequence of painting problems that are designed to assist both experienced and less experienced artists to connect with some important fundamentals of painting. Virtually all the work will be made from direct observation, using a variety of subjects and involving a range of spatial contexts. Three-dimensional form and space, and the relationships of various objects

to each other, will be explored through exercises in tone to colour, in a sequence of situations that begin from simplicity, and gradually work towards more complex uses of these elements. The relationship of drawing to painting will be considered, and systematic attention will be given to colour mixing. There will be plenty of opportunities for individual and general discussion. Tuition Fees: The workshop costs $860 full fee (including GST) for seven days. Early Bird bookings will receive a discount - $825. Materials not included will be an extra $447. Please Contact: Margaret Gevever Ph: (07) 4093 8835, or Laurel McKenzie Ph(07) 4055 3072 for full details of the course.

The initial event/exhibition was a massive success, involving over 15 local and 2 international artists, attracting over 450 attendees in a 5 hr period and creating Cairns first official legal graffiti wall. In 2009, Tastey, The Upholstery and the soon to be opened Caffiend (*see attached Press Release) are bringing it back in a bigger better way, with the creation of Cairns’ largest public art work and the grand opening of Cairns’s newest and coolest Coffee Bar, as part of the inaugural Alley Project
