  • SUNAL ÍCONO Extreme Altitude Malbec

SUNAL ICONO Extreme Altitude Malbec Wine is a robust yet elegant wine made from grapes grown in four micro-terroirs in Argentina’s Upper Calchaqui Valley. This is a very small vintage you won’t want to miss. Grape Variety: 100% Malbec

Number of bottles: Extremely limited, 5,000 bottles.

Vineyards: For SUNAL ICONO wine-maker Agustin Lanus worked with grapes sourced from four small extreme altitude vineyards, located in three provinces that make up the Calchaqui Valley, Argentina: Salta, Tucuman and Catamarca provinces. The vineyards are located between 2,200 meters and 2,700 meters, making them among the highest in the world.

Elaboration: The grapes are hand-harvested and the wine made using 100% native yeast, cold pre-fermentation for 5 days, soft maceration of 30 days in total, natural malolactic fermentation.

Aging: The wine is aged for 24 months in a mix of French oak, 50% new and 50% neutral used barrels. After bottled unfined and unfiltered have been ages for 15 months.

Tasting Notes: The ultra-premium SUNAL Malbec wine is made from grapes grown at the very limits of where grapes can be grown. The length of time required for grapes to mature at such extreme altitudes results in thick skins and very low yields, allowing the winemaker to produce an incredibly complex and full-bodied wine. The color is a rich purple, with the nose dominated by balsamic notes and black fruits with floral scents and a long finish.

  • SUMAK KAWSAYA unique Malbec made in collaboration with the Los Amaichas community of indigenous peoples

    Grape Variety: 100% Malbec

    Number of Bottles: 5,000

Vineyards: Made from 40 small (¼ to 1 hectare) vineyards owned by members of the Los Amaichas indigneous community in Amaicha del Valle, a dramatic desert setting high in the Andes mountains, 2,200 meters above sea-level. The soils are alluvial with a large amount of sand and rocks. The poor soils, wide temperature variations and long maturation time due to the extreme altitude produce a very hardy Malbec grape.

Elaboration: A celebration of ancient terroir, SUMAK KAWSAY (“The Good Life” in the native dialect) is produced with minimal intervention and a deep respect for the earth mother. The vineyards are tended using ancient techniques and the harvest is done by hand, with the assistance of mules.

Aging: 50% of the wine is aged 15 months in tank and 50% in used French Oak barrels.

Tasting notes: An intensely aromatic wine with scents of cherry, dried fruits and graphite, with notes of honey and chocolate from long barrel aging. In keeping with the traditional methods of the winemaking, SUMAK KAWSAY Malbec is not filtered or clarified and therefore may contain residue.
