North Idaho College is the first two-year college in that state to receive the CAE2Y designation. Missoula College (affiliated with the University of Montana) has also been designated a CAE2Y, becoming the first institution of higher education in Montana to receive either designation. Also among the new CAE2Y designees are Columbia Basin College and Edmonds Community College in Washington State; Houston Community College and South Texas College; Central New Mexico Community College; St. Louis Community College in Missouri; and Terra State Community College in Ohio. The University of Washington, previously a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R), has now received the CAE-CDE designation as well. Several CyberWatch West member institutions received their designations at a ceremonyduring the National Cyber Summit in Huntsville AL in June while others will do so at aceremony at the NICE Conference amp Expo in Dayton OH in November

CyberWatch West assists institutions in developing or revising their cybersecurity curriculumto map to national standards The consortium is also working toward creatingenhancingeducational pathways in cybersecurity to ensure that information assurance coursework istransferable from community colleges to four-year institutions

CSUSB shares how to combine content fromcybersecurity national security programs This summer CyberWatch West hosted a five-session webinar series in which CaliforniaState University San Bernardino (CSUSB) faculty shared the process they had used to createan academic degree program to bridge the gap between cybersecurity and the intelligencecommunity The series was taught by Anastacia Webster a CSUSB adjunct instructor with one of theprograms first graduates and Professor Tony Coulson who is also a Co-PI for CyberWatchWest as guest speakers CSUSB has shared the KSAT mapping tools it used the resulting National Model Curriculum

New Cybersecurity Internship Handbook One of CyberWatch Wests ongoing goals has been to create a replicable national model foreffective student internships in the cybersecurity industry A 20-page internship guide is now available for use by students employers faculty membersand worksite supervisors to make internships a positive experience for all involved

The guide has been authored by Anna Carlin CISA a full-time Computer InformationSystems (CIS) instructor at Fullerton College a two-year college in Southern California Sheaccepted the position after years of teaching classes at Cal Poly Pomona on IT auditcybersecurity and computer forensics While at Cal Poly Pomona she led the internshipefforts for the CIS department and she has been able to adapt the Cal Poly Pomona modelfor use at Fullerton College To download a copy of the handbook as either a MS Word file or a PDF file visit theCyberWatch West website at httpwwwcyberwatchwestorgindexphpfaculty-141internship-model

International Collegiate Cyber Defense CompetitionInvitational Launched at HighlineCyberWatch West member school Highline College organized the first International CollegiateCyber Defense Competition Invitational (ICCDCI) this June bringing together teams from fourcolleges for friendly collaboration and competition Teams from the University of Central Florida Brigham Young University and NamibiaUniversity of Science and Technology traveled to the Des Moines Washington campus thePoliteknik Negeri team from Medan Indonesia participated remotely Patterned after the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition the ICCDCI competitionasked teams to defend the network for the fictional company ldquoAutonoSaferdquo from a ldquoRed Teamrdquoof malicious hackers Because one of the goals of the event was to promote collaboration between cybersecuritystudents from different countries teams were recognized for exceptional performance in avariety of areas rather than one overall winner being selected

All the 2017 ICCDCI competitors gathered at Highline College Brigham Young Universityrsquos team was awarded ldquoBest Remediationrdquo for successfully figuringout how the Red Team penetrated the system kicking them out and preventing them fromgetting back in as well as ldquoBest Inject Scorerdquo The University of Central Florida wasrecognized for ldquoBest Uptimerdquo and Namibia University of Science and Technology receivedldquoBest Professionalismrdquo There was a collective gasp when participants learned the president and vice president ofHighline Collegersquos team which built the event were both still completing their Associate ofApplied Science degrees Participants also said they were impressed that the event was sowell run in its first year Dr Amelia Phillips a tenured faculty member in Highlinersquos CISCS Department traveled toNamibia in October to assist with that countryrsquos third National Cybersecurity Competition Shesaid she hopes to also be able to support the creation of the first national competition inIndonesia and that the next ICCDCI will be held overseas

Participants chatted online about job openings and internships with potential employersincluding Bank of America the National Security Agency and the National Protection andPrograms Directorate (NPPD) component of the Department of Homeland Security They also played a cybersecurity trivia game collected accomplishment badges connectedwith each other in the Networking Lounge and watched two presentations by speakers withexpertise in ways to pursue cybersecurity careers The CAE in Cybersecurity Community which organized the event is exploring the possibilityof holding a similar event in 2018

New Cybersecurity Internship Handbook One of CyberWatch Wests ongoing goals has been to create a replicable national model foreffective student internships in the cybersecurity industry A 20-page internship guide is now available for use by students employers faculty membersand worksite supervisors to make internships a positive experience for all involved

The guide has been authored by Anna Carlin CISA a full-time Computer InformationSystems (CIS) instructor at Fullerton College a two-year college in Southern California Sheaccepted the position after years of teaching classes at Cal Poly Pomona on IT auditcybersecurity and computer forensics While at Cal Poly Pomona she led the internshipefforts for the CIS department and she has been able to adapt the Cal Poly Pomona modelfor use at Fullerton College To download a copy of the handbook as either a MS Word file or a PDF file visit theCyberWatch West website at httpwwwcyberwatchwestorgindexphpfaculty-141internship-model

International Collegiate Cyber Defense CompetitionInvitational Launched at HighlineCyberWatch West member school Highline College organized the first International CollegiateCyber Defense Competition Invitational (ICCDCI) this June bringing together teams from fourcolleges for friendly collaboration and competition Teams from the University of Central Florida Brigham Young University and NamibiaUniversity of Science and Technology traveled to the Des Moines Washington campus thePoliteknik Negeri team from Medan Indonesia participated remotely Patterned after the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition the ICCDCI competitionasked teams to defend the network for the fictional company ldquoAutonoSaferdquo from a ldquoRed Teamrdquoof malicious hackers Because one of the goals of the event was to promote collaboration between cybersecuritystudents from different countries teams were recognized for exceptional performance in avariety of areas rather than one overall winner being selected

All the 2017 ICCDCI competitors gathered at Highline College Brigham Young Universityrsquos team was awarded ldquoBest Remediationrdquo for successfully figuringout how the Red Team penetrated the system kicking them out and preventing them fromgetting back in as well as ldquoBest Inject Scorerdquo The University of Central Florida wasrecognized for ldquoBest Uptimerdquo and Namibia University of Science and Technology receivedldquoBest Professionalismrdquo There was a collective gasp when participants learned the president and vice president ofHighline Collegersquos team which built the event were both still completing their Associate ofApplied Science degrees Participants also said they were impressed that the event was sowell run in its first year Dr Amelia Phillips a tenured faculty member in Highlinersquos CISCS Department traveled toNamibia in October to assist with that countryrsquos third National Cybersecurity Competition Shesaid she hopes to also be able to support the creation of the first national competition inIndonesia and that the next ICCDCI will be held overseas

Participants chatted online about job openings and internships with potential employersincluding Bank of America the National Security Agency and the National Protection andPrograms Directorate (NPPD) component of the Department of Homeland Security They also played a cybersecurity trivia game collected accomplishment badges connectedwith each other in the Networking Lounge and watched two presentations by speakers withexpertise in ways to pursue cybersecurity careers The CAE in Cybersecurity Community which organized the event is exploring the possibilityof holding a similar event in 2018

New Cybersecurity Internship Handbook One of CyberWatch Wests ongoing goals has been to create a replicable national model foreffective student internships in the cybersecurity industry A 20-page internship guide is now available for use by students employers faculty membersand worksite supervisors to make internships a positive experience for all involved

The guide has been authored by Anna Carlin CISA a full-time Computer InformationSystems (CIS) instructor at Fullerton College a two-year college in Southern California Sheaccepted the position after years of teaching classes at Cal Poly Pomona on IT auditcybersecurity and computer forensics While at Cal Poly Pomona she led the internshipefforts for the CIS department and she has been able to adapt the Cal Poly Pomona modelfor use at Fullerton College To download a copy of the handbook as either a MS Word file or a PDF file visit theCyberWatch West website at httpwwwcyberwatchwestorgindexphpfaculty-141internship-model

International Collegiate Cyber Defense CompetitionInvitational Launched at HighlineCyberWatch West member school Highline College organized the first International CollegiateCyber Defense Competition Invitational (ICCDCI) this June bringing together teams from fourcolleges for friendly collaboration and competition Teams from the University of Central Florida Brigham Young University and NamibiaUniversity of Science and Technology traveled to the Des Moines Washington campus thePoliteknik Negeri team from Medan Indonesia participated remotely Patterned after the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition the ICCDCI competitionasked teams to defend the network for the fictional company ldquoAutonoSaferdquo from a ldquoRed Teamrdquoof malicious hackers Because one of the goals of the event was to promote collaboration between cybersecuritystudents from different countries teams were recognized for exceptional performance in avariety of areas rather than one overall winner being selected

All the 2017 ICCDCI competitors gathered at Highline College Brigham Young Universityrsquos team was awarded ldquoBest Remediationrdquo for successfully figuringout how the Red Team penetrated the system kicking them out and preventing them fromgetting back in as well as ldquoBest Inject Scorerdquo The University of Central Florida wasrecognized for ldquoBest Uptimerdquo and Namibia University of Science and Technology receivedldquoBest Professionalismrdquo There was a collective gasp when participants learned the president and vice president ofHighline Collegersquos team which built the event were both still completing their Associate ofApplied Science degrees Participants also said they were impressed that the event was sowell run in its first year Dr Amelia Phillips a tenured faculty member in Highlinersquos CISCS Department traveled toNamibia in October to assist with that countryrsquos third National Cybersecurity Competition Shesaid she hopes to also be able to support the creation of the first national competition inIndonesia and that the next ICCDCI will be held overseas

Participants chatted online about job openings and internships with potential employersincluding Bank of America the National Security Agency and the National Protection andPrograms Directorate (NPPD) component of the Department of Homeland Security They also played a cybersecurity trivia game collected accomplishment badges connectedwith each other in the Networking Lounge and watched two presentations by speakers withexpertise in ways to pursue cybersecurity careers The CAE in Cybersecurity Community which organized the event is exploring the possibilityof holding a similar event in 2018
