How to become a nutritionist Professional practice
CAN I PRACTICE AS A NUTRITIONIST FROM ONE OF YOUR COURSES? Not surprisingly this is one of the most common questions we get asked. The short answer is ‘no’. Nutritionists have undertaken at least three years of tertiary study, that’s around 24 subjects. So one unit won’t make the grade. However, knowing that this is why many people come to us, Cadence Health has worked hard to secure a unique option for you to pathway to the Bachelor of Health Science with Endeavour College in Nutrition or Naturopathy. Generally, cost and time starts at around 3 years fulltime and $40,000.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENT TO BECOME A NUTRITIONIST The minimum requirement to gain insurance and registration to practice as a nutritionist is a diploma (which will be phased out in 2019 and the minimum will be a degree) (see How to Become a Nutritionist on our website). In order to practice safely and with insurance nutritionists and dietitians will register with an industry body and then gain liability insurance. INTERNATIONAL You will find most countries have a similar process consisting of a degree, registration to an industry body and then insurance. In the UK some of the below links will assist you in accessing relevant information to assist in this process: • The Nutrition Society -
http://www.nutritionsociety.org/ • The British Association for Applied
Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy (BANT) - http://www.bant.org.uk/
• British Nutrition Foundation - http://www.nutrition.org.uk/
ARE THERE OTHER OPTIONS? There sure is… if the science is off-putting, or the clinical nature of such a degree isn’t what you are after, or the price tag is a bit rich, we may have just the perfect option for you. Become a Recognised Nutrition & Health Coach…

You have probably had a good look around
at the myriad of courses and providers out
there offering all manner of options and
saying all manner of things you can (or can't)
do with your 'qualification'.
Your credentials, registration and insurance
Cadence Health is a quality provider with a
passion for holistic health and a high degree
of integrity. It was Cadence Health who
originally submitted the modality 'Nutrition &
Health Coaching' to IICT based on a seven-
unit program that has at it's core four units in
nutrition, psychology and behaviour change,
wellbeing coaching and physical and mental
health (along with a minimum of three electives across business, health and education).
You will see providers utilising similar sounding 'programs', some don't even come close to meeting these foundations, and
it's this that is the real issue around accreditation, transparency. Every unit you take with us reflects strong educational
practices, health values and a clear scope of practice.
We know it's all very confusing when it comes to accreditation, the confusing messages by some providers don't help. Some
suggest that you don't actually need any qualification or registration, which is true in a sense. But, what they don't tell you is
that if you charge for a service you become liable for what you say and do in delivering the service. Yep! A pretty
important point to leave out!
You will be awarded a certificate with the formal title of 'Recognised Nutrition & Health Coach' as deemed by registering
agencies such as IICT and insurance underwriters. Registration for those with existing health or fitness qualifications is
available with the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine, and we have more registration options coming shortly for
Europe and further.
It's critical to have robust registration, and even more robust insurance based on a relevant scope of practice that the
training is based on, which directly reflects the modality it's registered under. What’s the point spending money on a
‘program’ that clearly doesn't deliver anything that resembles a quality program? Insurance or no insurance!
