Academic Course Plan
Calculating your Grade Point Deficit Eastern Michigan University requires that all undergraduates have a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 in order to graduate. The University places those with less than 2.0
on academic probation and requires that they raise their overall GPA to 2.0 within three semester of first being placed on probation. With this in mind, it is important to determine the proximity of a student’s current overall GPA
to 2.0. The Grade Point Deficit Scale is used to calculate the deficit points, which provide the student a focus for the objective of a 2.0; remove all the deficit points and a 2.0 or higher will be the result. There are two ways to remove deficit points: (1) by earning grades higher than C, which result in positive points and (2) by repeating deficit grade points, which removes those points from the GPA calculation.
The Grade Point Deficit Scale is as follows:
GRADE CREDITS
1 2 3 4 5 6
A +2 +4 +6 +8 +10 +12
A- +1.7 +3.4 +5.1 +6.8 +8.5 +10.2
B+ +1.3 +2.6 +3.9 +5.2 +6.5 +7.8
B +1 +2 +3 +4 +5 +6
B- +0.7 +1.4 +2.1 +2.8 +3.5 +4.2
C+ +0.3 +0.6 +0.9 +1.2 +1.5 +1.8
C 0 0 0 0 0 0
C- -0.3 -0.6 -0.9 -1.2 -1.5 -1.8
D+ -0.7 -1.4 -2.1 -2.8 -3.5 -4.2
D -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6
D- -1.3 -2.6 -3.9 -5.2 -6.5 -7.8
E -2 -4 -6 -8 -10 -12
To determine the overall grade point deficit at the present time, go to your on-line academic transcript. In the transcript, locate the current transcript totals (this will be just below the most recent completed term of enrollment). Proceed with the following:
1. Multiply the current overall GPA Hours by 2. 2. Subtract that amount from the Quality Points. 3. The result will be the current grade point deficit.
Note: Any questions regarding this system of grade point deficit can be referred to the Assistant Director for Academic Actions in the Academic Advising Center (301 Pierce Hall; 734-487-1207).
I need a semester GPA of ___________ and a cumulative GPA of ___________ to no
longer be on probation. If my cumulative GPA is below ____________ I will be removed from the university.

Meeting with Instructors Benefits of Talking with Your Professors:
Meeting with your professors is very important to your success as a student. Regularly meeting with your professors allows you to:
Personalize your learning in the classroom. Be less stressed as you get a clear picture of expectations and how to meet them. Build relationships with your professors who may be able to write impressive letters of
recommendations for scholarships or job applications
(Wayne State University, 2007)
Progress Reports: You are required to meet at least two times with the instructor of each course you are taking. You must meet after the 2nd and 4th weeks of class, and also after mid-term to discuss your mid-term grade. Other meetings may be required by your academic advisor(s), or your instructors.
