• Some departments require many control courses
• But not many control courses are typically offered from chemical engineering departments!

CPC7 Conclusions
Gatzke Thoughts:• Simulation may not be
sufficient (PCM?)• Need online materials (Virtual
Process Control Book?)• Distance education
(WebCAST?)
• Initial meeting held at CPC concerning online materials
Conclusions
• The number of departments offering graduate control courses is slowly declining in the U.S.
• The job market for the systems area is still healthy, mostly in traditional ChE areas
• Simulation is a critical part of a graduate control course – opportunity for sharing courseware
• Web-based modules can supplement graduate courses – sharing of information to develop virtual textbook
• Distance education could enhance graduate education by sharing expertise and content on specialized topics.

Issues
• Copyright– Usually authors retain copyright, but allow distribution– Creative Commons? Allows for modification.
• Editing and Control– Some want guaranteed level of quality control– Revision and review?
• Time and Motivation– Why write a chapter or clean up notes?

Observations
• Useful resource for new graduate students• Difficult to get contributions
– High load, education on “back burner”?– Many want to “polish” their material
• Various older books available– Other books and chapters that may be useful?

Recent Vision
2007 NSF Engineering Virtual Organization– Gatzke, Hahn, and Parker
• Community driven resources (process control wiki)– Distributed contributions and editing– Reviewers: Not traditional peer review system
• Community news / research / career resource– Community moderated, community generated content– Reviewers: CACHE already exists
• Grow into larger community (CAST 10, etc.)Result: Not recommended for funding, need new vision?
Supported: CACHE effort with multiple industrial participants

Conclusions
We need more content: course notes, book chapter, challenge problems, review articles, presentations, other…
Technology may stay simple for now
Still interested in community driven resource
