Dear Mayor and City Council members:

    Received by

    ity lerk

    Attached

    is

my application to be considered for a position on the Community Activities & Cultural Commission.

    My

    husband's family has deep roots

    in

    Carmel, and when

    we

    were dating, he made

    it

    clear that Carmel

    was

    the only place

he wanted to ever call home. I grew up in the Bay Area, but from the first time I visited, I knew exactly what he meant.

    We moved

    home

in 2003, to raise our family, and plant our own roots in the community. Within the first week, my

    husband volunteered

    to

    be a defensive coach

    for

the Carmel High Varsity football team, and I reached out

    to

    local

community choral groups to find places to sing. Carmel

    is

    special, not just because

    of

    the beautiful landscape and

breathtaking views, but by what the community has to offer. My husband was already established here, but what I found

    was

a warm, welcoming community filled with passionate people and a plethora of opportunities

    to

    be involved. Living in

    Car mel

    has

    made me feel

    as

    if

    I am a part

    of

    something greater than myself. I

    want to

    give back

    to

    my community, and I

feel joining the Community Activities & Cultural Commission

    is

the best fit to utilize my skills and talents to serve Carmel.

I'd like to share with you a story of the day I knew Carmel was more than just a little city by the sea . A few years

ago, I was a school chaperone

    for

    a walking field

    trip

from River School to downtown Carmel. With 24 enthusiastic third

    grade

    rs

, we walked- first through the Mission Trails, where we stopped and admired local birds,

    and

    greeted walkers

    and

    their

dogs. Our fir st official stop

    was the

Outdoor Forest Theater, where we stopped

    to

    look at the memorial site

    of

    "Pal"

and learn about Carmel's dog. There were builders working on the set for the next production, and they

    gave

    us a tour of

the stage and set. They even

    took

our picture Our next stop was supposed to be

    the

Murphy House, but as we walked

past the fire station, a young firefighter stopped us and said, "Hello, Miss Gillooly " The students were shocked that this

man knew their teacher's name. It turns

    out

, he had been a third grader at River School, and Miss Gillooly had been his

    teacher

    tool

    The fire chief came

    out with

little plastic fire hats, and we

    got

    a

    tour

    of the fire truck. They

    also

    took our

picture. Elated, we continued on, when an older man approached and said, "Hello, Pam "

    Miss

    Gillooly began to cry. It

    was

    HER

third grade teacher, from when she was a student at Woods School in Carmel. He told us stories of field trips

    he

    took with his

    class

    around Carmel.

    He

    gave the

    class

    advice. We, of course,

    took

    a picture. We arrived late

    to

    the

    Murphy House, and

    as

we approached, an old man with a scraggly beard was sitting outside polishing shells. He called

    himself "Abalone Joe".

    He

told the kids stories about abalone fishing, and ga ve us a little history about Carmel and

abalone. He taught the kids "The Abalone Song".

    We

    did eventually take

    our tour

    of

    the

Murphy House, but what I took

    away

    that

day was far greater than the history lesson. Carmel isn't just a place to visit, or a place to live. It's a place to

    belong.

    That

    is

    why I want

    to

    be a

    part

of the Community Activities Cultural Commission. The local events and cultural

    activiti

    es

    define who

    we

    are

    as

    a community. We need

    to

    strive

    to

    maintain

    the

greatness that is Carmel's history, but

    also be open

    to

    fresh ideas that

    our

    next generations can build upon.

I look forward to talking with you about this opportunity.

    Please

feel free to contact me with any questions.
