Yes, we recognize the old hangars are now an eyesore... but weren't they already? While the Apron Rehabilitation Project, which will literally pave the way for a future large hangar just east of the Airport's parking lot, has had it starts and stops, the project is moving forward albeit slower than staff would like. There has been a lot of frustration trying to synchronize the timing for the all the necessary components needed to complete the project. This is where we are now: Current status The project bid package is complete and the construction plans have been taken to the City of Upland for approval and permit processing. What is needed? Due to the size of the project, the City is requiring a Water Quality Management Plan and a certified Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). Staff anticipated the need for these plans but once construction started, not as a condition to get permits. This will effectively slow the project way down until these reports are completed. Once these reports are completed and submitted to the City, CCB should get the permits needed to proceed. What is to come? Once the necessary permits are secured from the City, the bid package will be advertised and made available. The entire bid process will take 45 to 60 days. In the mean time, CCB will be slowly dismantling the old hangars and preparing the site for construction which should be well under way by the end of this year.

In June, the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 448 along with the Commemorative Air Force 3rd Pursuit Squadron organized and oversaw the Antique Aircraft Display Weekend which falls on the first weekend where Saturday and Sunday are in the same month. Simply park or display your aircraft in any of the transient parking areas to satisfy the criteria needed for certification that your aircraft was displayed. In order to get credit for displaying your aircraft and/or to receive the appropriate proof of display, you must check in at the Foothill Flying Club beginning at 8 AM on display weekends. If you do not receive your proof of display on either of the display days, come into the Airport Office to get your proof. If you have any questions regarding Antique Aircraft Display Weekend, feel free to contact Bill Cary at 818-519-9137.

Do You Need Maintenance on Your Hangar?Whether it be a leaky roof or door that is impossible to open (or close), feel free to contact CCB's Facilities Maintenance personnel for help at [email protected] or by calling the Airport Office at 909-982-6021.

Do We Have Your Current Insurance?Insurance companies for many of our tenants automatically sends us a copy of certificates of insurance when any change is made to the policy particularly when the policy renews. If you hear from the Airport Office about your insurance, then there is a good chance you have not listed Cable Airport as an “additionally insured” on your insurance policy and we need current or up to date insurance for our records. Being additionally insured is the mechanism that triggers automatic notification. Your insurance company should be willing to list Cable for no additional cost. Also, this saves you and the Airport Office time and energy getting the required certificates of insurance. It is important to remember the insurance requirement within your lease is to protect you as well as the Airport and is required. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Airport Office. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Suspicious Activity?Part of being here at CCB and being part of this great airport community is the ability for everyone to watch out for each other. While there are some cameras in place throughout Airport grounds, their view and purpose are specific. They are not meant to watch everyone's property. While we have gates and security to help protect our personal property, nothing beats the eyes and ears of all of you in noting things that seem peculiar and out of place. For obvious reasons, we only want those that belong on the Airport to be here. While at the Airport, we ask that If you happen to notice any activities that appear suspicious in nature, please let the office know immediately so we may investigate. Being the eyes and ears for the Airport helps us all. Thank you for your help.

Do you have stories and photos that you would like to share with the Cable community via the the Cable Gram and the Cable website? Or do you have an idea for a story? If so, contact Annette at [email protected] and tell us what you have. We are always looking for fun items to share with our family here at Cable Airport!

We would like to hear from you...

The temperature is starting to climb and there is a whole new batch of critters looking for cool places to hang out particularly in areas where food is plentiful. Case in point is the rattlesnake recently found in hangar 173 (pictured to the right). And there have been numerous stories like this one throughout the years. We ask you be careful this time of year. Be alert. Rattlesnakes are sensitive to temperature and will adjust their behavior accordingly. After a cool night, they will attempt to raise their body temperature by basking in the sun midmorning. To prevent overheating during hot days, they will become more active at dawn, dusk or during the evening. Be careful when opening your hangar doors. Snakes tend to crawl and lay where they feel protected such as under the doors or against the walls.

Be Careful...

Temperatures have been warmer and promises to get even hotter. And as we all know airplanes don’t perform their best in these hot conditions. It is important to take precautionary measures when we just have to fly whether it is for training or the need to get somewhere. First and foremost take care of yourself as the pilot and be sure to stay hydrated. Do the homework necessary to understand the conditions of the hot environment which would cause you to fly. Though the hot conditions may not be ideal be sure to understand how the heat can change the aircrafts aerodynamic performance. Taking shortcuts lead to accidents and it is very important that one plans accordingly and stays safe in the process!

For tips on flying in high density altitude areas and how to calculate density altitude, visit the AOPA website at: https://www.aopa.org/training-and-safety/active-pilots/safety-and-technique/weather/density-altitude#WIDA
