Page 2: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 0:06 secondsTo start the trailer there is a wide shot to establish the setting, this is setting the viewers up for the mood and the setting. The skater, bus stop and cars parked up show that the neighbourhood is an average neighbourhood with nothing to worry about which is conventional for a horror to do this makes the audience feel even in a good, happy place and in a neighbourhood that could be similar to theirs, bad things can still happen and it strikes more fear into the audience.

Sound- From 0:06 to 0:24 (parallel sound)There is parallel, non-diegetic sound at the very first scene starts of a peaceful piano playing which sets the mood up to be happy and gives of a nice relaxing feel to the scenes going through until 0.24 seconds.

Page 3: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 0:07 secondsThis mid shot of the characters shows that they are all friends this is because the proxemics of the characters show they are friends by making sure they are close together and they are happy.

Page 4: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 0:08 secondsThis long shot is showing that they are packing for a trip because the bags are bulky and the character is placing them into the campervan. This is introducing the campervan so that the audience know that they are going on a trip. The camera pans this could connote that someone is watching him.

Page 5: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 0:09 seconds to 0:12 secondsThese shots show the characters setting off for the journey ahead personally I don’t think it needs all the close ups and mid shots it wasting time but they are emphasising the neighbourhood and how happy they are.

Page 6: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 0:19 seconds to 0:23 secondsThese shots wide angle establishing and aerial shots are showing the setting and the journey that the characters are embarking on. It is setting up the sense of open space and how low on civilisation the setting is. Meaning if something was to happen to the characters nobody would be able to find them or help them. Therefore the audience know that the characters are vulnerable and will worry about it.

Page 7: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Text- 0:26 secondsThere are no transition until this point, this is because they happy narrative part of the trailer needs straight cuts because they want the scenes to run >>>>>>>> so that they can keep the happy mood flowing. There are transitions throughout after this point the texts have transitions where they are faded in or out this makes the text flow nicely threw the scenes and doesn’t take the audiences concentration form the scenes.

Page 8: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 0:24 secondsLIONSGATE is advertised because they want to promote the company to the viewers and if the film is enjoyed then the audience may seek the company out next time they are looking for a film they want to enjoy.

Sound- 0:24 secondsThe scene of the LIONSGATE logo 0.24 seconds into the trailer of Cabin in the woods the mood changes from happy to scary and enigmatic this is because the sound changes from upbeat and happy to sharp and changes from high pitch sounds for the suspense to low pitch sound for a heart pounding sound. When the LIONSGATE logo comes up there is a Low pitch Sudden echoed noise which is used to emphasis what’s in the seen and also scared the audience keep the suspense. These are all non-diegetic sounds.

Page 9: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Sound- 0:27 secondsThe mood changes and the scene cuts to a place which looks abandoned and deserted the non-diegetic parallel music gets sharp and the pitch gets higher it gives the upcoming scenes suspense. All the sound in the scenes becomes echoed which gives the audience the feeling that somebody else can hear them.

Camera0:26 seconds to 0:30 secondsThese show the state of the facilities around the area that the characters will be staying and its all run down beaten up most of it doesn’t work the windows are dirty and the place is a mess showing that the owner doesn’t car about the place “so why is he there could there be another reason?” The audience will know that the characters won’t have use of any facilities making them more vulnerable, thus making the audience frightened and worried for the characters.

Page 10: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera0:30 seconds to 0:41 The shots show the enigmatic character he doesn't care about offending people because he spits in one shot and talks with a mono expression on his face and monotone voice. The Mid shot of the friends show that even they are concerned now this gives a signal that the audience can be concerned.

Sound-0:31 seconds As this character comes up on the screen the is a dramatic echoed non- diegetic parallel sound is played, this gives the audience the impression that he is an antagonist. As the characters ask for the road that the cabin is on there is a change in the bass as if it is warning the audience about the terror of the cabin.

Page 11: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Sound- 0:42 secondsWhen the scene cuts from the old enigmatic man to the black transition and into the next scene the low pitch sudden non-diegetic echoed noise is used again keeping the suspense to the maximum they can.

Page 12: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Sound- 0:43 secondsThere is a screeching non-diegetic parallel sound in this shot, after the loud low pitch echo noise during the transition noises which add suspense. Because they are amplified more than they should be, which isn't natural making them creepy.

Page 13: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera-0:43 secondsThis low angle shot emphasises the ground and the backdrop. There isn't a clear way of getting out and its all rugged and the surfaces would be hard to walk on let alone run on. The audience may pick up on this and it will worry them. The low angle also creates the feeling of looking up at things making the audience feel small and vulnerable.

Page 14: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Text- 0:46 seconds 0:46 into the film there is text saying “You Think, You Know the Story” the text is white but like most horrors has rough jagged edges to show that the film may be dangerous and rough. It is sending of signals to the audience before they have even watched the film. It is also on a dark background with the grid (force Field) behind it because it is part of the film and it keeps popping up in the film this shows that it is important to the film and the story. This piece of text also has sound to give an impact and to make sure the audience realise they are meant to read it.

Sound- 0:47 secondsA low pitch non-diegetic noise always appear if text comes up so that it doesn’t take anything away from the video being played. It makes the trailer flow together well.

Page 15: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 0:49 seconds to 0:53 secondsThis shot is showing that the mirror on one side is see through this gives the house enigma because if someone can see the characters through a mirror, it will make the audience think about what is watching the characters and from where.

Sound- 0:50 to -0:53 secondsThese shots have high pitch non-diegetic parallel noises to keep up with the suspense.

Page 16: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Text- 0:55 secondsAbout 0:55 into the film once again it is the same text and it conveys the same things as the first piece of text this time it is on a background and the text firstly appears with a shine of light emphasising it this Is good because the scene before it was of a girl looking into a mirror and it is emphasising both scenes so that the audience remember them. The background then goes dark and fades into the next scene.

Page 17: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 0:57 secondsOnce again the establishing shot is showing the open space and the denseness of the population how exposed the characters are.

Page 18: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 0:58 to 1:02 secondsThis is where the characters first see that there is some sort of cage or fence keeping the characters captive so that they cant escape. They show this by using a digital image of an eagle flying into the cage. The eagle is a graceful and respected creature it has great vision and if the eagle couldn’t see its fatal fate then what hope do the characters have. By killing the eagle the creators of the film are making sure the audience is feeling vulnerability and lost hope.

Sound-0:58 to 1:01 secondsThere is a heartbeat non-diegetic, parallel sound in this scene because the sound makes the audiences heart rate increase, it creepy for a person to hear a heartbeat because its unnatural.

Page 19: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Text- 1:03 secondsThere is a scene with an eagle going into a force field then it cuts to more text in the same style as before this time about 1:03 into the trailer, the force field is emphasised in this scene signifying that the force field is important and its getting more important as the trailer goes on drawing more and more attention to it. Maybe to get people thinking about what it is for or to give them the feeling of being trapped making them feel more scared.

Sound-1:03 secondsThere is a high pitch screechy noise with the text it makes sure the text doesn’t take away from the mood.

Page 20: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:05 secondsThis mid shot is showing the enigmatic character that the main characters saw at the run down gas station. He is on the phone talking to someone.

SoundThe non-diegetic, parallel sound quietens down until 1:08 seconds in when the characters says the lambs have come to the killing floor. Then it picks up the drums kick in again and the scenes are getting more enigmatic the characters are speaking about something weird going on.

Page 21: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:07 secondsThis close up of the computer screen shows the audience how vulnerable the characters are. This shot is showing a computer screen with live images of the main characters and the shot could even be a Point Of View shot making it seem as if someone is watching the screen.

Page 22: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:08 secondsThis wide angle shot is showing a high-tech control room with satellites and staff this is showing that whoever is watching the main characters is doing it with good equipment and for either an experiment or for fun this makes it creepy because it makes sure the audience knows that the situation is very possible in the real world and its educated intelligent people carrying out this situation.

Page 23: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:09 secondsThis wide angle shot is showing that the characters can be watched from outside the house this gives the scene enigma.

Sound-1:09 secondsThe sound changes in this scene just after the old enigmatic man says about the main characters being coming to the killing floor. It sets the suspense its non-diegetic and parallel to the mood.

Page 24: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:09 to 1:11 seconds These shots (left – Mid shot) (right – wide angle shot) show that the characters are having a laugh, drinking alcohol and dancing. This makes them vulnerable and the audience will pick up on the vulnerability.

Page 25: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:12 secondsThis close up shows that someone is activating things to harm the characters. This shows you that its like a game and the power comes from theses unknown enigmatic characters. The audience will pick up on the fact that

Page 26: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera-1:13 secondsThe close up of gas is a indexical signal for poison or harm, the viewer will pick up on this.

Page 27: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera-0:17 secondsThe long shot is lit up slightly and then the scene goes dark and the walls shake this is showing how, they can even control the house they are in and that the characters aren’t safe anywhere.

Page 28: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera-1:17 seconds This mid shot is the first shot of one of the main characters being scared this is like way of saying to the audience you can be scared now. The mid shot has been used to show the characters stance and how she is standing because this shows how comfortable the character is, through their body language. Also the mid shot captures the facial expressions and as you can see the character is scared and flustered.

Page 29: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera-1:20 secondsThis close up is another time we see someone pulling levers to activate the traps and harm the main characters. This is continued throughout the trailer making sure the audience know that there is somebody trapping and harming the characters. This thought is creepy but is popular in horror films presently

Page 30: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera-1:21 secondsThis wide angle shot of a head rising out of the water will scare the audience because it is abnormal and creepy. In horrors the more creepy the better nothing can be too creepy because it will always give the reaction the director wants.

I have changed the lighting so that you can see the scene easily but the dark original scene is used in the trailer because it give the scene a more enigmatic feel.

Page 31: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

SoundWhen the scenes become more scary and when something is

chasing the main characters the bass and drums kick in adding more and more suspense and when something happens that is

scary the sounds volume increase to scare the audience.

Page 32: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera-1:22 secondsThis close up is showing the audience that another character is scared in the group and by showing each character as being scared it builds up that fear and the vulnerability In the group.

SoundThe scene before this one Is silent because it then emphasises this scenes sound of the female character screaming

Page 33: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Text- 1:23 seconds 1:23 into the video there is some text, it has changed from the recent texts, maybe because the trailer has become more scary and intense or because it is the producers name but it is now a red tinted background which looks like smoke the text seems the same but I think the red is giving of signals of death and blood to make the trailer more scary and give of the signal that there might be gore.

SoundThere is a loud smashing sound as the text appears to emphasis it and keep the mood to not let the text take anything away from the trailer.

Page 34: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:24 to 1:25 secondsThese shots show two of the main male characters locking the doors and being the typical male narrative of protective, it shows the audience that they are trying to keep something out and away from them. The mid shot shows the struggle and determination of the characters locking the door and the close up shows the lock and this shows that the door is locked and gives the scene some security.

Page 35: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

I have changed the lighting so that you can see the scene easily but the dark original scene is used in the trailer because it give the scene a more enigmatic feel.

Camera- 1:26 secondsThis shot shows the characters proxemics have changed they have changed. The characters are closer together because they are scared so they are closer together. The audience will pick up on this and it will make them nervous.

Page 36: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:27 to 1:28 secondsYou can see from these close ups that the characters are scared and gender narrative is put into action in these shots this shows that the female is scared and driven by emotion whereas the male is driven by action as you can tell this by their faces.

SoundThe male character talks about staying together which is a good idea.

Page 37: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

I have changed the lighting so that you can see the scene easily but the dark original scene is used in the trailer because it give the scene a more enigmatic feel.

Camera- 1:28 secondsThese shots pop up everywhere so that the antagonistic characters are involved and it keeps the horror and tension up this is an effective way of keeping the tension.

Page 38: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Text- 1:29 secondsThis piece of text introduces a person then places an intertextual reference of the hit ‘CLOVERFIELD’ this is bringing other films to back up the new one. It can make someone's expectations change and they may want to watch the film more. In this case I would like to watch ‘Cabin In The Woods’ because I enjoyed ‘CLOVERFIELD’.

Page 39: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:33 to 1:36 secondsThese shots show that the characters are thinking about a plan of how to escape this nightmare. The close up shoes the facial expressions well and the audience can get a better idea of what the character is thinking. Whereas the mid shot is showing the expressions of more characters the body language giving the viewer a better insight to what the majority of the characters feel.

SoundIn this scene the character in the first shot talks about splitting up, it shows that the characters can be manipulated. The audience will know that the characters are vulnerable and will become cautious thus becoming more jumpy.

Page 40: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

I have changed the lighting so that you can see the scene easily but the dark original scene is used in the trailer because it give the scene a more enigmatic feel.

Camera- 1:36 secondsThe villain has penetrated the cabin and the once safe cabin has turned into an unsafe place to be (Clover ).

Page 41: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Text- 1:38 secondsThis piece of text is giving the audience a date to look forward to the date is usually a couple of months later than the trailer so it causes a marketing buzz and this trailer has done this.

SoundThere is a loud non-diegetic electronic sound when the text appears I thinks it is so that the text doesn’t take anything away from the footage and it blends into the trailer but also keeps the narrative them and the mood.

Page 42: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:39 secondsThis long shot shows that the characters have a chance of escaping and the viewers will have a false sense of hope this is common to have in a horror because the false sense of hope means that the audience is vulnerable to a scare or change of narrative.

Page 43: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:40 to 1:41 secondsThese shots show the enigmatic antagonist watching the characters and pressing a button all of these shots are making sure the audience know that the main characters are being harmed by someone and it is almost impossible for them to hide. The over the shoulder shows how the antagonist can watch them and the close up shows that it is him pressing buttons.

SoundThere is some Foley diegetic sound for when they press the button to give the scene verisimilitude.

Page 44: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:41 to 1:42 secondsThese shots show the audience the power that the antagonists have over the main characters and the consequences of escape. The over the shoulder shows the explosion and the long shot shows the reaction.

SoundThere is Foley sound for the explosion and for when the rocks are hitting the floor to give the scene verisimilitude because the sounds are diegetic.

Page 45: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:44 secondsThis wide angle shot shows the characters realising that it is almost impossible to escape as they look down at the sheer drop.

Page 46: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:46 to 1:47 secondsThese shots show that one of the character is wondering what the camera is and possibly figuring out what is happening to them, the way they explain what he is looking at is they use a point of view of the antagonist looking at the computer screen to show that it is a camera. This is effective because it has changed the 3rd person view to a 1st person.

Page 47: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 1:49 secondsThis low angle shot shows the power of the characters the enigmatic monster is peering down at his victim, its scary because the monster has higher ground and the shot emphasises this.

Page 48: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Text- 1:49 to 1:57 secondsThese pieces of text pop up throughout the trailer they are giving the cabin enigma and giving the audience some narrative to think about and wonder about.

SoundThere is a sound that is used for each time the text appears it’s an electronic sound and keeps to the lab theme.

Page 49: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

I have changed the lighting so that you can see the scene easily but the dark original scene is used in the trailer because it give the scene a more enigmatic feel.

Camera- 1:52 secondsThis is a bear trap and it resembles death or pain and it is being used as a weapon it is out of the ordinary and isn't used for handheld purposes. This will freak the audience out because it’s being used out of the ordinary.

Page 50: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 2:00 to 2:01 secondsThe close up shots shows that there is some sort of lever that the antagonist is pulling and then blood is coming out a tap into a bowl. Then finally the wide angle shot shows the blood on the wall it as if the antagonists are preforming a ritual of some sort and rituals are weird because it consists of someone choosing an unwilling candidate to be killed and the audience will be effected by the fact that the protagonists are being killed for a sacrifice. The audience will get freaked out.

Page 51: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

I have changed the lighting so that you can see the scene easily but the dark original scene is used in the trailer because it give the scene a more enigmatic feel.

Camera- 2:02 secondsThis is a low angle shot of someone getting dragged into a forest and this is a conventional thing in horrors because the thought of getting dragged backwards is terrifying it shows that the antagonist character dragging the other person has more power and this makes the character getting dragged vulnerable.

Page 52: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 2:03 secondsThis two shot, close up is there for the freak factor because it is intimidating and creepy when you cant see somebodies face and masks are used a lot in a horror genre because it is a simple easy and cheap way of getting this creepy enigmatic character across to the audience.

Page 53: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 2:04 to 2:06 secondsThere are transitions it fades out to slow the pace of the trailer down and to introduce the title of the film. They are put throughout so that the scenes will run together nicely but also to cause tension. Conventionally in the horror genre the transition will be dark and if there is one it will be slow because its building up to the scare and in this trailer it does exactly that.

Page 54: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 2:13 to 2:17 secondsThese shots show that the characters have probably realised that they are being watched and killed by someone the mid shot of the character messing with the electronics shows that he is trying to mess up the system. The two shot shows the characters have found the elevator and are going to find the people that have done this to them. The final close up shot shows the blood on the elevator doors and shows that they are still in trouble as they reach the antagonists. The audience will realise that the characters still have little hope and they will get this from the last shot.

Page 55: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Camera- 2:18 secondsThe last scene is conventionally in a horror trailer a scary terrifying one to keep the image in your head thus keeping the trailer in your mind. The close up keeps the face of the terrified female in the viewers brain and it’s an effective way of doing it. This is also sticking to the conventional last female character which is used in most horrors this is because

SoundThere is a woman screaming in this shot and there is a sound bridge to the next and last scenes for spine chilling sound to stick in the viewers mind after the trailer has finished

Page 56: Cabin In The Woods Trailer Analysis

Text- 2:19 to 2:24 secondsThese pieces of text are there for advertisement such as the twitter hash tag. Also to show us the director and the writer for their own recognition but also for the audience to look for them in the future if they enjoy the film or trailer. The title gives the audience something to search for when they want to look into watching the film a researching into it. Then the coming soon is just so there so that the audience gets excited and if they liked the trailer go and find out about it quickly.

TheoryThe trailer, based on Phil Parkers theory comes under the ‘Candide’. The fundamental aim of life is not to be happy but to survive.
