Books & ReadingBOOK CLUBL First Tuesdays Book Discussion

Ages 18+. 1 hr. “Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend” by Katarina Bivald. NOTE: Call 303-8181 or register online. This program is limited to 15 participants. Face masks are required and social distancing guidelines will be followed. To learn more about current Library operations, visit wichitalibrary.org/covid-19. Broken Wheel, Iowa, has never seen anyone like Sara: Sara traveled all the way from Sweden just to meet her book-loving pen pal Amy, but when she arrives she finds Amy’s funeral guests just leaving. The residents of Broken Wheel are happy to look after their bewildered visitor―there’s not much else to do in a dying small town that’s almost beyond repair. You certainly wouldn’t open a bookstore. And definitely not with Sara the tourist in charge. You’d need a vacant storefront (Main Street is full of them), books (Amy’s house is full of them), and...customers. The bookstore might be a little quirky. Then again, so is Sara. But Broken Wheel’s own story might be more eccentric and surprising than she thought. L Women’s Suffrage Book ClubAges 18+. 1 hr. “African American Women in the Struggle for the Vote, 1850-1920” by Rosalyn Terborg-Penn. In honor of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the U.S. in 2020, the Library is hosting a quarterly book club dedicated to reading about the history of that event. The current selection is African American Women in the Struggle for the Vote, 1850-1920 by Rosalyn Terborg-Penn. Analyzing the women’s own stories, the author examines why they joined the woman suffrage movement in the United States and how they participated in it - with white women, Black men, as members of African American women’s organizations, or simultaneously in all three. Co-hosted by the League of Women Voters Wichita-Metro. A limited number of books are available for check-out at the Evergreen Library. Registration is required; call 303-8181 or register online. This program is limited to 20 participants. Face masks are required and social distancing guidelines will be followed. Ages 18+. 2 hrs. Their efforts were documented in this film, which serves as a cautionary tale in this election year. Following the film showing, we will have a panel discussion of the Kansas and Sedgwick County experience.
