From the Editor … Mr. Paritosh Pawar (Librarian)
I just want to bring into the readers of this column, a fact, that is already there in the common knowl-edge but seldom reflected on by the Indian gi-gaminds (when it comes to proposing and propa-gating innovation in education, India is seen as a land with a plethora of isms) The recent Times Higher Education world university rankings has shown that China has stepped up its ascent in the world stage, with it now having the top institution in Asia for the first time. Till recently it was the National University of Singapore that had this place of pride, which has now been overtaken, by Tsinghua University of China. How did China, which was much behind India till 1995, achieve this marvellous feat?
Although we focus only on the available in-expensive Chinese products, what we don’t realize is, that China has invested time and

thought in shaping the destiny of its youth, and through its concerted and time bound efforts, in bringing up the quality of education. Till recent, China was also a country which basked in its past days of glory. But in the last two or so decades, Chinese administrators and academia realized the need for giving wings to their best minds and help these young torch bearers reach elite universities in the world, and, from there, bring back the current devel-opments in technology, best practices in fi-nance, economics, humanities, literature, the accounting patterns, trends in medicine etc. They even gave a fillip to English education.
Isn’t it time, that like the rest of the world, In-
dia too sat back and took notice?
In the fast changing IT era, we are see-ing a shift in the reading habits as well as in the information seeking behavior of students and teachers. The new generation is more comfort-able with the digital media than the print me-dia. Accordingly, the library is also making re-sources available in the digital format. The li-brary has been subscribing to more than 6,000 online e-journals and more than 3,35,000 e-books through N-LIST. We are also planning to add more online e-journals to our electronic resources collection. Students, researchers and teachers are all welcome to access these fully downloadable resources. Why does the library need to pay for e-journals and e-books when ‘everything’ is available free on the Internet? This is a question asked by teachers and students alike. When-ever there is a need for any information, the first reaction is to use the mobile phone, search the information on Google and get the informa-tion. But nobody thinks about the authenticity,

validity and reliability of the information available and whether the contents are fac-tual or not. Information hosted on websites may have content which may not have been verified or scrutinized. Also, there is a differ-ence between textual information on web sites and research articles and published scientific literature. E-Resources material available through paid platforms is scrutinized, peer reviewed, checked for its authenticity and is the output of research. Hence, this information is more factual, tested and reliable. Access to e-journals and e-books is available through the E-Resources webpage on the Library Website. I hope that library users take optimum benefit of the e-resources made available by the library. Library users are requested to send their suggestions and feedback about the newsletter as well as the library to the email –

phasizes the changing patterns and traditions of history writing in, and the contestations
between, Western and non-Western perspectives—especially Indian—with their inter-
nal contradictions and confrontations, external associations, and mutual influences over
