C16 THE MUSKOKAN, Thursday, June 28, 2007. A love affair...

ical note complete the book. There are over a dozen titles in this outstanding series of Canadian histor- ical novels. Although aimed at girls nine and up, boys too will find many a kindred spirit in these pages. Tweens and teens From Boneshakers to Choppers: the rip-roar- ing history of motorcy- cles by Lisa Smedman. Toronto: Annick Press, 2007, 124 pages, $14.95 paperback A friend of mine, who is the principal of a large secondary school in the GTA, hinted that for her 50th birthday she’d like a motorcycle. The big day came and her husband and four grown daughters handed her the keys to a brand new Harley- Davidson! We know them all — kids in tattered jeans on trail bikes, Italian busi- nessmen in high-fashion suits on sleek little Vespas, hippies of the ’60s on “choppers,” biker gangs in black leather and chains on monster machines, law-abiding seniors cruising sedately into town for a pit stop at Tim’s — our love affair with motorized wheels never ends. If you or your kids have ever gazed longingly at a really cool bike’s chrome, leather, power and pizzazz, you’ll love this book. Vancouver author Lisa Smedman indulges her own passion for motorcy- cles in 120 pages of amaz- ing photographs, vintage ads, information boxes and succinct, clearly pre- sented text. She covers the history and evolution of the production and marketing of bikes, bikes in wartime, outlaw gangs, biker jargon, stuntmen, biking as an extreme sport and as a hobby for anyone. A bibliography and index are included. Fascinating to look at, fun to read, Boneshakers to Choppers will have wide appeal. Family fare 211 Things a Bright Boy Can Do by Tom Cutler. London: HarperCollins, 2006, 300 pages, $23.95 hard- cover Red Rose tea may be available “only in Canada,” as the sad British voice used to lament on a popular TV commercial, but it’s only in Britain that one finds writers like Tom Cutler. With that classic Rabelaisian humour for which the Brits are famous, or maybe infa- mous, he brings us a handbook of activities, advice and admonitions which, in his own words, are “aimed chiefly at boys, guys, geezers, blokes and fellows between the ages of about 16 and 106 who find themselves at a loose end on a wet Wednesday afternoon.” The blatantly sexist title seems destined to tempt female readers to secretly flip the pages of this allegedly “boys” book and when they do, they’ll laugh just as shamelessly as the guys at the gags, titillating trivia, practical jokes and earthy humour. Actually, everyone can pick up some useful tips here on such pastimes as canoeing, fishing, camp- ing, cooking and crafts, but only if you can stop guffawing long enough while reading lines like “exactly when it was that the idea bulb went on over the head of the first fart lighter is lost in the mists of time. Perhaps one of our Neanderthal ancestors let rip too close to the fire and shed a sur- prising light on a new world of cheap entertain- ment,” or “some chaps have a desire to flourish a freshly killed snake for their photograph albums. Don’t fall for this one. Many a pith-helmeted hero brandishing his kill has been bitten on the nadgers because freshly executed snakes have excellent reflex actions.” The cover, illustrations and layout of the book are a spoof of its serious early 20th century counter- parts and the British vocabulary telly, bangers, blokes, gormless — are fun. Leave this one in full view around the cottage this summer. And yeah, let the kids read it out loud at the dinner table if they want to, unless of course, Great Aunt Agatha has just brought them a gilt-edged edition of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare.
