Research, Teaching, and Clinical ContributionsMy clinical expertise and research interests, broadly defined as Cognitive/Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry, involve the intersection between Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery, Neuropsychology, and Cognitive Neuroscience. Typical physician-referred patients regarding brain-cognition-behavior relationships include those with:

Neurodegenerative DiseasesComplex Partial SeizuresTraumatic Brain InjuryAtypical Psychiatric Syndromes Confusional StatesStrokesDevelopmental Syndromes including Attention Deficit Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Mental Retardation, Autism, and AspergersHypoxic EncephalopathyComplex Movement DisordersMultiple Sclerosis

4

Page 5: C U R R I C U L U M V I T A E.doc.doc.doc.doc.doc

Viral and Bacterial Encephalitides including HIVBrain Tumors

Areas of clinical research include:

Psychiatric Neurosurgery Brain Dysfunction in Violent and Criminal BehaviorCognitive and Behavioral Changes in Focal Brain DiseaseEEG Abnormalities in Psychiatric Patients: The Effects of Traditional and Atypical AntipsychoticsHemineglect/Right Hemisphere SyndromesMovement Disorders in Neurology and PsychiatryDementia and Supranormal aging: Neurology, Neuropathologic and Neuropsychological CorrelatesDepression: The Integration of Neurology, Psychiatry, and NeuroscienceComportment: Insight, Self-Awareness, Judgment, Social Adaptation, and EmpathyMeasurements of Competence and Coercion in Patients with Neuropsychiatric IllnessIntersection between law, ethics, neurology, and brain imaging

In 1999, I established a McLean-based, foundation-funded fellowship in behavioral neurology/neuropsychiatry open to physicians trained in neurology. The ten fellowship graduates are an immense source of pride for me. I have received a $456,000 grant from the Sidney Baer Foundation to continue the fellowship through June 2009, $100,000 will fund a clinical research component. Our fellowship is one of eleven programs approved by the United Council for Neurologic sub-specialties. In 1996, I co-founded a two year fellowship program in neuropsychology which has now graduated sixteen fellows. I co-direct the McLean neuropsychology and psychodiagnostic testing service. My teaching commitment includes the direct supervision of more than 20 psychiatry, neuropsychology, geriatric, and neurology residents and fellows and approximately 40 Harvard medical students who rotate through McLean Hospital per year. My principal teaching method involves twice weekly multidisciplinary inpatient consult rounds where our team evaluates patients with complex cognitive and/or behavioral disorders. As a teacher-clinician, I hopefully convey the rigor, elegance, and excitement of the clinical interview, examination, and synthesis with laboratory data while emphasizing the patient’s humanity and dignity.

As chief of a Neurology department since 1994, I spend a considerable amount of administrative time insuring that operations run as smoothly as possible. This involves the coordination of eight part-time adult neurologists with a FY-2006 outpatient volume of 750 visits, inpatient consult volume of 420 patients, EEG volume of 400, and neuropsychological and psychodiagnostic testing volume of approximately 600. I have a weekly outpatient clinic as part of the MGH Cognitive/Behavioral Neurology Unit, attend at MGH one month per year, participate in a Partners Behavioral/Cognitive Neurology bi-monthly forum, serve as the neuropsychiatric course director for the MGH/McLean PGY II and PGY-IV psychiatry resident lectures, have directed 12 lectures per academic year for PGY-IV psychiatry residents at Cambridge Hospital since 1989, have directed the behavioral neurology/neuropsychiatry consultation service at Tewksbury State Hospital since 1992, and am a rotating course director of our yearly Partners Neurology CME course on “Dementia: A Comprehensive Update,” now in its twelfth year.

My most compelling educational mission is the further integration of the clinical neurosciences-neurology, psychiatry, neurosurgery, and neuropsychology. Historically, neurology and psychiatry have become separated by a common organ. However, given our now common foundation of neuroscience, the traditional boundaries are becoming increasingly indistinct. My position as Chief of the McLean Hospital Department of Neurology allows me to convey this message in theory and practice. I have been an invited lecturer at numerous medical, neurologic, and psychiatric conferences throughout the Northeast. I’ve also advanced this issue as an invited

lecturer at major national and international forums in Cambridge, England, Madrid, Istanbul, Mexico City, Havana, Hawaii, Aspen, Colorado, Chiappas, Mexico, Riyadh and Medina, Saudi Arabia, and

Antayla, Turkey. I have chaired relevant programs at the American Psychiatric Association and the American Neuropsychiatric Association. Locally, I serve as a neurologic emissary to the Departments of Psychiatry at McLean and MGH as well as within Harvard Medial School. I serve as an ambassador for behavioral neurology/neuropsychiatry within neurology, adding legitimacy to this relatively young discipline. I also serve as a consultant to the Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico City where a Neuropsychiatric Institute has been opened in honor of Emil Kraeplin.

Recent publication highlights include a Current Concepts article on “Memory Dysfunction” co-authored with Andrew Budson which appeared in the 2/17/05 New England Journal of Medicine; an article in collaboration with my nursing colleagues at McLean Hospital entitled, “Traumatic Brain Injury in Psychiatric Inpatients”, which was published in the 2/05 Journal of Neuroscience Nursing; an article summarizing our 11 year experience at McLean Hospital, “Coalescence of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Neuropsychology. From Theory to Practice” published in the May/June 2006 issue of the Harvard Review of Psychiatry; senior author of a chapter (with my psychiatric colleagues at MGH) for the second edition of The Human Frontal Lobes (Bruce Miller and Jeff Cummings, editors) on “Psychiatric Neurosurgery: Past, Present, and Future”; and senior author of six chapters in major psychiatric and neurologic textbooks to be published within the next year. A relatively new interest is the intersection between neurology, law, and ethics, which has lead to an article I co-authored with two forensic psychiatrists, “Is a picture worth a thousand words? Neuroimaging in the courtroom” published in the August 2007 issue of the American Journal of Law and Medicine. I recently completed my tenure as the President of The Boston Society of Neurology and Psychiatry, an organization which was founded in 1880.
