“Rejoice and be glad” in Latin ‘Gaudete et Exsultate’, is the title of therecently published Apostolic Exhortation by Pope Francis (April 9, 2018).The document is a call for all of us, not only priests and religious, tobecome holy. This universal call to holiness echoes the Second VaticanCouncil. I would like to highlight some paragraphs of the Pope’s writing for ourprayer and the ongoing formation of our Christian consciences. Theentire Exhortation will be available on the Vatican website: Vatican.va

Pope Francis is a Pope who repeatedly advocates for those who live on the peripheriesof society - the poor, the powerless, and the migrant fleeing persecution and deprivation. HisExhortation reflects that consistent papal theme - the Peripheries; where Christ is found indisguise.

“… Jesus clears a way to seeing two faces, that of the Father and that of our brother. He doesnot give us two more formulas or two more commands. He gives us two faces, or better yet,one alone: the face of God reflected in so many other faces. For in every one of our brothersand sisters, especially the least, the most vulnerable, the most defenseless and those in need,God’s very image is found. Indeed, with the scraps of this frail humanity, the Lord will shapehis final work of art. For ‘what endures, what has value in life, what riches do not disappear?Surely these two: the Lord and our neighbor. These two riches do not disappear!’”The Corporal works of mercy - “The text of Matthew 25:35- 36 (“For I was hungry and yougave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, nakedand you clothed me, ill and you cared - for me, in prison and you visited me.”) – is ‘not asimple invitation to charity: it is a page of Christology which sheds a ray of light on themystery of Christ’. In this call to recognize him in the poor and the suffering, we see revealedthe very heart of Christ, his deepest feelings and choices, which every saint seeks to imitate.“Given these uncompromising demands of Jesus, it is my duty to ask Christians toacknowledge and accept them in a spirit of genuine openness, ‘sine glossa’. In other words, without any ‘ifs or buts’ that could lessen their force. Our Lord made it very clear thatholiness cannot be understood or lived apart from these demands, for mercy is ‘the beatingheart of the Gospel ’.”

POPE FRANCIS REAFFIRMS OUR CALL TO HOLINESS

The Unborn, the Born, the Poor - “Our defense of the innocent unborn, for example, needs tobe clear, firm and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of the human life, which is alwayssacred and demands low for each person, regardless of his or her stage of development. Equallysacred, however, are the lives of the poor, those already born, the destitute, the abandoned andthe underprivileged, the vulnerable infirm and elderly exposed to covert euthanasia, the victimsof human trafficking, new forms of slavery, and every form of rejection.”

The Migrant - “We often hear it said that, with respect to relativism and the flaws of our present world, the situation of migrants, for example, is a lesser issue. Some Catholics consider it a secondary issuecompared to the ‘grave’ bioethical questions. That a politician looking for votes might say such a thing isunderstandable, but not a Christian, for whom the only proper attitude is to stand in the shoes of thosebrothers and sisters of ours who risk their lives to offer a future to the children.welcoming the stranger we welcome him?”

Can we not realize that this is excactly what Jesus demands of us, when he tells us that in welcoming thestranger we welcome him?

Happy Easter! Christ is risen, Alleluia!Father Bruce

”God is a Father who forgives. His mercy is greater than our sin.”

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FORTHE WEEK

Why are you troubled? Life can easily get the best of us.Anxiety, worry, doubt, and uneasiness are just some of thethings that can trouble our hearts. Often we are troubledabout temporal things. Sometimes our faith troubles us andwe wonder where God may be. If we allow Jesus to open ourminds so we can understand the Scriptures and thesignificance of his passion, death, and resurrection, we canbegin to trust that God’s plan includes something muchmore than the current concern of our minds. Jesus can thenbecome a light of revelation who helps us keep our lives inperspective and persevere.

A recent conference hosted by Catholic Charities of Rockville Centre addressed the epidemic ofaddiction, which affects us all. Among other things, we learned that the majority of people of faith whoare either afflicted or affected by addiction say that they never considered reaching out to their church

for support. We are all touched by the disease of addiction. Our pastoral team may not have a solution, but we may

know of some resources that you haven’t tried. Or perhaps you may simply need someone to talk to.Please know that there is no need to suffer alone. For information about additional resources, call ParishSocial Ministry at 516-756-9656; for an appointment to speak with one of our priests, call 516-249-0127.
