Congratulations to all our cross runners who competed in the Zone Cross Country. You can all be proud of your efforts. Twelve of our runners have qualified for the CPSSA Cross Country finals. Thank you to Mr Harper for organising training and to the parents who supported the team on the day.

We have a very talented designer at Cotswold School. Congratulations to Zoey Marshall who won a design competition. Zoey designed a new set of race silks for Canterbury harness racing driver Dexter Dunn to wear at the World Drivers Championships. Well done Zoey. During Term 1 parents with children in the Junior School celebrating birthdays during Term 1 & Term 3 had the opportunity to attend Junior School Interviews. Parents of students in the Senior School had the opportunity to attend Senior School Interviews where teachers shared with parents initial data gathered from testing and discussed how parents could support their child's learning. It was pleasing to see that 95% of parents eligible for interviews took the opportunity to meet with their child class teacher. During the last two weeks of this term we will be holding Junior School Interviews for children in our Junior School who will be celebrating birthdays in Terms 2 or 4 and Senior School Learning

Conferences for all Senior School students. We encourages all parents to be involved. Your child's education is a real partnership between your school and yourself. Before attending an interview or conference: Think about what you have noticed about your child's work - parents often notice things when they are helping their

child with homework

Talk to your child about how they feel about school and anything that they are really enjoying, finding too easy or too difficult

Ask them if there's anything they want you to talk about with the teacher. If it's a three-way conference they can ask these questions

New To School - Parent-Teacher Meetings Usually a couple of times a year you (and often your child as well) will have the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher and talk about the progress your child is making. Here's what to expect from these meetings and some tips to get the most out of them.

What Is A Parent-Teacher Meeting? This is a meeting between you and the teacher to talk about your child’s learning and progress. They might be called parent-teacher interviews, parent-teacher conferences or even learning conferences. Many schools and kura organise them for early in the year and then after a mid-year school report has been sent home. They might offer you a set time, invite you to contact them to arrange a time, or more and more schools are asking parents to book a time that suits online using a parent-teacher interview website. Some schools hold meetings before or after school, others run them in the evening.

More than one person can go to the meeting - you are welcome to take other members of your family or whānau. They are useful, positive meetings where as well as hearing from your child's teacher, you can ask questions and share your thoughts so that you and your teachers can become partners in your child's education. In more and more schools, students attend the meetings as well. These meetings are often called three-way conferences. If your school doesn't do this, and you want your child to be at the meeting with you, check that it’s okay with the teacher.

Cotswold School - Building Brighter Futures – He Ara Whakamua Page 4

Do I Need To Do Anything Before The Meeting? Meetings are usually short, so it's worthwhile for you and your child to do some preparation and make some notes to make the most of the time:

Think about what you have noticed about your child's work - parents often notice things when they are helping their child with homework

Talk to your child about how they feel about school and anything that they are really enjoying, finding too easy or too difficult

Ask them if there's anything they want you to talk about with the teacher. If it's a three-way conference they can ask these questions

What Sort Of Questions Might I Ask?

Does my child participate (take part) well in class?

Is my child progressing as expected?

What do they do well?

What do they need help with?

What can I do to help?

Does my child seem settled at school? How do they get along with others?

Are there any areas for concern?

What's the best way to contact you if I want to follow up on anything we've talked about? Should I Talk To My Child About What The Teacher Said? Even if your child doesn't ask, they'll probably be keen to hear what you talked to the teacher about. Share the positive things that the teacher said and give them plenty of praise. Then talk about anything the teacher suggested you could do at home to help them. If you didn't agree with something that the teacher said, it's better to stay positive about the teacher or the school in front of your child. If you have concerns about anything that was discussed, you should arrange a separate appointment with the teacher to talk about this further. Can I Talk To The Teacher Outside Of A Parent-Teacher Meeting?

Yes you can talk to the teacher anytime. In fact, you are in a partnership, and both want your child to do well, so you are encouraged to talk regularly with the school. Ask the teacher what the best way to contact them is. You can follow up on things that were talked about at the parent-teacher meeting, or discuss an issue or topic in more depth. You can often talk to the teacher in person for brief discussions without needing to make an appointment - just make sure you approach the teacher well outside of class times. If you want to have more time for a longer conversation it's best to make an appointment so that you all have plenty of time to talk.

After 7 books have been read they will receive a ‘pizza wheel’ from Mrs Collins in the library that can be taken to Hell’s pizza for a free 333 kid’s pizza. PARENT ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER JUNE 2017

**This term we are fundraising for our new junior adventure playground** Disco This Friday the 9th of June. The Junior disco (years 0-3) is from 6pm-7pm at a cost of $3 a ticket The Senior disco (years 4-6) is from 7.30pm until 9pm at a cost of $4 a ticket Tickets will go on sale that morning at the canteen window from 8.30-9am (door ticket sales will also be available). We have a variety of “glowing” products on offer and these are from $2 each and will be sold at the disco only (not in the morning as we do not want the children to be playing with them in class). Please do not bring your own Glow Sticks with you. In previous years we have had incidents where they have broken and the liquid inside has stained the hall floors. We are also looking for parent help on the evening. Sometimes the hall gets very hot and we open some of the doors for fresh air. Therefore we require parent help to be security guards on the doors so no children can leave unattended. If you can help out at either or both of the discos, please ring Helen on 021 277 1117. Thank you. Parents and Caregivers please note that we do not let any children leave the school hall by themselves. Please do not wait in cars outside the school gates for your child to come to you. Each child must be collected from the school hall doors by a caregiver. We also do not provide child care between the junior and senior discos, we use that half an hour from 7pm until 7.30pm to clean up and prepare for the next disco. Please wait with any children outside until the doors open at 7.30pm. Parents can also purchase tickets for pre-schoolers so they can have access to the drinks and chips. Stuck on You Please check out https://www.stuckonyou.nz/affiliate/fundraiser/COTSWOLDSCHOOL We will be receiving a percentage of sales through this link. It's an opportune time with the new school uniform to order some clothing name labels so those uniforms, if lost, can make their way back to their owner!! Quiz Night This will be on Friday the 25th of August. At the moment we are collecting items (such as vouchers for services, products, discount coupons…..anything considered!) that we can use in a raffle or for spot prizes. Sausage Sizzle This will be on Wednesday the 14th of June. Sausages are $2 each, purchased before school (8.30-9am) from the hall kitchen window. If you can help with cooking please come at 10.30am to the kitchen or for handout at 12.30pm. Please be aware we will cook for gluten-free students, however you must provide the sausages in a named container in the morning, and we will ensure your child gets their sausages heated for handout time. There is no charge for this service (make sure your child has appropriate bread etc in their lunch box, we cannot provide this). Pizza Lunch The next date for this is the 28th of June. This term we will be operating pizza lunches like we operate our sausage sizzles. Instead of pre-ordering your pizzas we will now sell tokens at the hall kitchen window (8.30am-9am) and your child can redeem their token for pizza outside the school hall at the start of lunch. All slices (Hawaiian, Beef and Onion, Ham and Cheese, Vegetarian, and Gluten-free Cheese) are $2 each. We cannot omit ingredients from these pizzas; they are standard pizza choices from Dominoes. Next Meetings These will be held on Tuesday the 27th of June and the 25th of July. Located in the school staffroom in the office block. We start at 7.30pm, and generally finish around 9pm. Everyone is most welcome to come along, you do not have to become a member, and we don't assign jobs unless you want one!
