Rabbi Idstein, Menahel

A Torah Thought from Rabbi Idstein...

Mr. Cleary’s Corner

Mr. Cleary, General Studies Principal

The commandment had gone out—”They shall make Me a Sanctuary so that I will dwell among them” (25:8). This charge set off a vast undertaking of contributions for the necessary building materials, including gold, silver, precious stones, rare skins, and cloths. Additionally, a monumental labor effort was required to transform the materials into the Mishkan, its vessels, and the priestly garments. To fulfill the requirements of the fine detail and intricacy of the construction, great skill and craftsmanship was needed. After much effort, care, and devotion, the Mishkan and it components were finally complete as the Torah records “All the work of the Tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, was completed” (39:32).

The Ohr HaChaim comments that the verse testifies to just the completion of work. The desire

and longing of the people to draw close to HaShem, however, remained unquenched. Notwithstanding the great efforts already spent, their commitment to do what they could to nurture their relationship with HaShem was as bright as the day they had begun. This is the stamp of a Jew and the beauty of the Mishkan!

This pure flame of inexhaustible pining for HaShem’s intimacy has been the hallmark of the Jewish people throughout the millennia. Even during the darkest times of the long and bitter exile, this “Pintele Yid” shines bright with love and knowledge of a Father above, caring and concerned for His children below.

May we all merit to soon feel HaShem’s full embrace, in Jerusalem!

Education at Torah Academy is more than just reading and math in the classroom. Students learn how to interact with one another as well as adults. They are provided opportunities to see things outside of school. Our students also learn how to be pushed and challenged and have the right might-set doing so. I am proud of the well-rounded education Torah Academy offers and I will continue to look for more unique opportunities to offer our students.

Our students are not typical. They are around each other constantly. They have to learn how to interact with people who know them very well. This is a learned process and some groups are better at it than others. We teach students how to interact with each other and how to do so respectfully. Students also need to understand how to interact and respect adults and authority figures. I am constantly reminding students that when an adult starts talking, they should stop talking. This is a lesson that will carry them a long way in life.

This week, our kindergarteners went to Orchestra Hall and learned about instruments and even had the opportunity to hear a mini-orchestra on the stage!! It was such an amazing experience. On Thursday, the 7th and 8th grade boys were able to listen to an inventor speak about the challenges of intellectual property. Daily, 1st and 2nd graders check out the “eagle cam” in Iowa. Recently, the middle school girls were given a tour of the University of Minnesota’s School of

Pharmacology. These are just some of the ways we strive to provide our students with the opportunity to experience more than just books and paper.

I have written about the concept of “grit” in previous articles. I am really learning to appreciate that grit is an acquired skill. We have the opportunity to help our students acquire and improve their grit (strength of character). My favorite thing to hear lately is, “I don’t know how to do this.” I get excited and respond, “That’s great, that means you are going to learn something today!” We are constantly trying to change each student’s mind-set. “I don’t know how to do this” should be “I don’t know how to do this yet.” Our teachers do an amazing job of pushing their students and working on their grit.

We are constantly looking to provide opportunities for our students Opportunities to learn how to function in a group, opportunities to experience parts of culture and the world they are unfamiliar with, even opportunities to be uncomfortable and uneasy about learning. My goal is that we provide our students with a well-rounded education with challenges and new opportunities.

Classroom Close-upMrs. CR Weinberg & Miss S. Mandelbaum~2G Judaic Studies

Attention all passengers, please fasten your seatbelts and make sure all your personal belongings are stowed. All cellphones must be turned off or on airplane mode (including your eraser “cell phone” prizes). Shushan Airlines welcomes you aboard today to join us flying to…

The rumors have spread and believe us – they are true 100%! Every Tuesday and Thursday, Kitah Beis boards a flight, passports in hand to a destination in Megillas Esther. We cover TEN learning targets each flight! It’s incredible to see how much the class learns and retains while taught in this unique setting – an “airplane”. After each flight, we journal about our trip in Hebrew! We get our passports stamped for neat kesiva (handwriting). We’ve had our noses pressed against the windows of the airplane as we heard and “saw” the miraculous story of Purim unfold before our eyes! But that’s not the only thing we use our eyes to see….

Monday – Thursday we use our eyes to “spy” shorashim in Chumash. Each possuk is sure to have some, so we keep our eyes open wide on the lookout. We’ve become experts at highlighting, translating, and decoding pesukim with the help of our Lihavin U’lihaskel workbooks. Speaking of Lihavin U’lihaskel, we almost forgot to mention one of our favorite parts of the day, singing our Lihavin songs which teach us important skills like identifying/translating prefixes/suffixes etc. What better way to learn than with fun tunes, motions, and… Chumash dollars!!! Chumash dollars are given for participation and a “Dollar Store” is opened each Rosh Chodesh when 2G can cash in for prizes.

The fun doesn’t stop there! Biur Tefillah comes on Wednesday and Friday, where we learn Birchos Hashachar through various mediums and then we scrapbook one page per tefillah. We can’t wait to bring them home and show you!

Yes, we do a lot of learning! Yes, we do a lot of working! Yes, our Morah has great expectations for each of the talmidos! And yes, we have a lot of fun through it all! But more important than all the learning, working, and meeting expectations is the achdus (camaraderie) and Bein Adam L’chaveiro which takes precedence over all the above. The fun and games, play, and group work provide a supervised social setting for the morah to be able to guide the girls in improving and enhancing their interpersonal relationship skills.

Keep up all your fabulous work! Have a wonderful Shabbos!Miss Mandelbaum

I have the privilege of joining the 2nd grade girls for the last hour of the school day. After a short transitional break with a snack (with a beautiful !), this exuberant group of girls is ready to learn! The three main goals of that hour include:

—perfecting the handwriting that was introduced in 1st grade—completing a wonderful workbook that includes a curriculum of , general knowledge, that

“every 2nd grader” should know. We will culminate the learning with a “final exam” at the end of the school year. is very exciting as we review these facts on a regular basis with a variety of fun activities and games. As a matter of fact, the girls know that they are usually asked a question before they leave at 4:10 p.m.!

—there is a true love for felt by all (including me!) in our classroom. The exciting drama, , and life lessons provide the important foundation for the students as Torah Jews. The girls take home their “Parsha Binders” each week with the new packet to share with their families and… of course, to study for the weekly quiz on Monday.

It is a true nachas for me to see how these girls are maturing as students and, most of all, as true .Mrs. C.R. Weinberg

The View from The ClassroomTorah Tot Two Year OldsWelcome to Shushan! You may think it’s Torah Tots,

but we have gone back in time to learn the Purim story! “Hear ye, hear ye...” was coming for our classroom as adorable 2–3 year olds became real looking likes of Achashverosh. We invited everyone to our party, even Vashti. Did she come? Ask our little adorable Vashtis! Stay tuned for next week as we become more characters of the Purim story!

Rosh Chodesh on Thursday was fun too as we looked so cute and made everyone happy with our real looking clown faces! What a fun week! See you at the Torah Academy banquet!

Mrs. B. Weinberg & Mrs. Rotkin Torah Tot Three Year OldsWe are so excited that it’s Rosh Chodesh and that

Purim is coming. We can’t get enough of the Purim story...we especially love the Queen Esther puppet and we’re making our own puppets so that we can act out the story. Music with Miss Angela from MacPhail was so much fun--we learned about so many instruments and then we even got to play them. Thank you parents for attending the conferences; may you continue to schep much nachas from your kinderlach!

Mrs. Fishman, Mrs. Lynn, & Mrs. ChodosOpen our door and a smile will spread across your face.

Our clowns were adorable. We were literally squealing with excitement! The Purim story is well on its way. We also intertwined the letter Q with the Queen, Esther.

We really know all about the Mishkan and its Keilim.Thank you, Morah Channah, for arranging our highly

successful music class with McPhail Center for Music. The children absolutely loved it and learned so much. This week the focus was on drumming. What will it be next week?

Have a great Shabbos,Mrs. Goldberger, Mrs. Heisler, & Miss B. WeinbergPre-KindergartenPre-K knows so much about Purim and Megillas

Esther! Ruach Day was fantastic! We are in the Purim spirit. We split up into different groups to build all the parts

of the Mishkan. We used Legos, blocks, Magna-tiles, and other materials to create each assigned part of the Mishkan. We came together, just like in Parshas Pikudei, to put it all together. Our Mishkan looked great!

Have a wonderful Shabbos!Mrs. Heisler & Miss WeiswasserWe started our Friendship unit! We learned what being

a good friend looks like and sounds like by making a book saying what we like about each other, and by crafting small gifts for classmates.

Mrs. Wenner

KindergartenWow! The Kindergarteners are experts with the new

nekuda, ! Next week will be our last new nekuda! As the plot thickens in the Megilla story, the children

are sitting “at the edge of their seats (or rug” as they listen to the exciting details. The class enjoys illustrating their own Megillos, decorating Haman groggers, and singing Purim songs!

Mrs. C.R. Weinberg & Mrs. BorensteinPurim is really in the air in our class! Kindergarten is

working on thier megillahs, puppets of the characters in the megillah (called cuppets - ask a Kindergartener why), learning the story of Purim so well and singing lots of Purim songs.

Getting ready for some great Rosh Chodesh Adar fun!!Mrs. Smith & Mrs. BodnerKindergarten had the most wonderful time at Orchestra

Hall this week. After trying out child-sized stringed instruments, we had a special mini concert onstage. We loved hearing the musicians play to the children’s story “Perfect Square.”

Ms. Haase, Ms. Kittleson, Miss H. Weinberg, & Miss H. Prero

First GradeWhat a fun week in Kitah Alef. We continued with

our ivrit unit on numbers. We did a few more activities to help us remember the numbers. We also finished learning ALL the letters in kesiva (script Hebrew)!! This is a huge accomplishment and we will continue practicing them until the end if the year!

Have a great Shabbos,Mrs. Herron & Miss E.M. Heisler

The third graders enjoyed art projects as a reward for meeting their positive behavior goals for February.

3G in the spirit of Purim!

This week, in Superkids the first graders worked on changing y to i when adding endings. In math they practiced finding ten more or ten less than a given 2-digit number. They also learned to identify numbers as even or odd. Ask a first grader the trick!

Mrs. Singer & Ms. KittlesonSecond GradeSee the Classroom Close-up!Miss Mandelbaum & Mrs. C.R.WeinbergWhat a beautiful Siyum we had! Many of the boys

brought in nosh to share with their classmates (and Rebbi), and we played an exciting search for the Shoresh game around the classroom! We jumped right in to Parshas Vayeira, learning how Avrohom Avinu treated the Malachim to a feast, and good news they brought! Keep up the good work!

Have a wonderful Shabbos!Rabbi Lichtman & Rabbi PamThird GradeThank you to all the mothers and grandmothers who

were able to join in the Siyum. The girls did an amazing job. I am confident that you

are as proud of them as I am. May we continue to make many more siyumim in the future.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.Mrs. PreroMazel Tov! This week the third graders celebrated their

siyum on parshas Toldos. We are continuing to spend a lot of time learning about Purim. We discussed about Amaleik, and Haman’s rise to power. We learned how Haman was the biggest speaker of lashon hara!

Have a great ShabbosRabbi FriedlerThis week in math, the third graders tackled finding

the mean and median in a group of data. We learned new terminology as we looked at the probability of events taking place. These terms included certain, most likely, less likely, possible, and impossible.

Mrs. HalekFourth GradeIn Chumash, we are learning about Paroh’s dreams. Is

it possible that in the great land of Mitzrayim NOT ONE of Paroh’s officers could interpret the dream? How could that be? Ask a fourth grade student!

Mrs. IdsteinAs we prepare to greet a new Sefer Torah at our school,

we studied the laws of Sefer Torah this week. How do we fulfill this mitzvah, as most people don’t write a Sefer Torah? How many lines should each column have? How many letters on a line? Ask our fourth grade students!

Rabbi WaxmanThis week we learned about helping verbs and main

verbs, and students started to create a “newscast,” where they will be presenting what they learned from a section in our social studies chapter to their classmates in the style of a newscaster. I’m looking forward to it!

Ms. BlairIn 4th grade this week, the boys started the unit

on division. They are learned what they can do with remainders and they are practicing different strategies to divide, such as subtraction and regrouping. We are looking forward to making some posters that will help us remember the different strategies! In science, we are getting into our unit on minerals, rocks, earth, and the water cycle. The boys are getting better at recording what we are doing when completing experiments and making observations!

Ms. WaringIn math, we are in the middle of learning about

fractions. We modeled how to find equivalent fractions with fraction bars, and discussed how to find fractions on a number line. In science, we practiced using scientific measurements with an experiment where we tested which tap had the coldest water.

Mrs. WennerThank you to all the parents who stopped by on

Monday to see the state report projects. We move on to capitals next week! Just a reminder... AR goals are due next Friday, March 15th.

Mrs. HechtmanFifth GradeThe Fifth graders are working on learning the pesukim

on their own, as they continue to prepare and give over to their classmates.

In Biur Teffila, we started learning the brachos of Shmone Esrei. Hopefully, this will help us connect even more to our daily Teffilos.

Adar is here and with that comes along the halachos and lessons of Purim!

Have a wonderful Shabbos!Mrs. LichtmanWhat a great week not only a test on Mishnayos, we

also got tested on saying mishnayos by heart! All did a fantastic job!

Ask your son, what connection does Perek 8 of Bava Kama have to do with Purim?!

Have a wonderful Shabbos!Rabbi MandelbaumAnother busy week in Fifth Grade! We are hard at

work preparing for our test on the Revolutionary War (and an exciting game of Twenty Questions next week!), beginning our Health Unit in Science, learning Algebra in Math (what’s a variable?), creating our stories as soldiers in George Washington’s army, and following Lina and Doon on their further adventures. Of course, we also enjoyed a visit to South Africa, and it was interesting to learn about a new kind of farm (ostriches, anyone?). Get ready for next week’s game—we are looking forward to seeing the characters of the Revolutionary War come to life! Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Mrs. GrossChallenged is the word I would use this week to

describe the rigor in 5B. The boys started 7th grade algebraic expressions. Working together as a group we found more success than working independently.

Mrs. KarakoSixth GradeAsk us to tell you why we were discussing a three-

legged chair versus a chair with just one leg in Chumash. Everyone did a fantastic job this week on the Lamed Tes Melachos quiz! And about the rest of our week...well, we just went from one exciting activity to the next! From decorating a banner for the Hachnosas Sefer Torah, to Ruach day costumes, and G.O. a fun filled week was had!

Have a wonderful Shabbos!Miss MandelbaumExcitement is in the air as the sixth graders are off

to Cleveland this Shabbos for the annual Midwest Siyum Mishnayos. They will spend Shabbos with hundreds of boys around their age, learning and davening at Telshe Yeshiva. Just before we wrapped up the morning, we discussed how the Nidon and the Eidim could both be punished, and whether that concept is Rava’s Chiddush.

In Chumash, we are aiming to complete Parshas Beshalach before Purim! I’m sure that our budding Talmidei Chachamim will do it!

Have a wonderful Shabbos!Rabbi LichtmanThe girls are busy working on a unit of measurement,

weight, and capacity in our US Customary System. We will be done in time for Pi Day on 3/14!!

They will use Pi to calculate the circumference of a circle. Besides, we will all have pie on that day.

The boys have completed a week long project of a scale drawing of a room in their house. They calculated the area and perimeter of the room they chose. Everyone thought the project was fun, and now they can read blue prints!!!!!!

The boys have started a unit on Pi and are learning how to calculate the circumference of a circle. They were all amazed to find out that there are more than 200 trillion numbers after the 3.14 of Pi!!!!!! Most of all, they are looking forward to eating some PIE on Pi Day next Thurs (3/14).

Dr. Thorne

Most of our time has been spent working hard on getting fantasy stories finished, and they look great so far. Keep it up, boys and girls!

Ms. BlairIn 6G, we completed our winter engineering unit! On

to learning about forces and motion! In 6B, the boys are learning Newton’s Laws of Motion.

We used balloons on a string to explore equal and opposite reactions.

Mrs. WennerSeventh GradeThe “Free Bee” has begun! Ask us to share the details

about this exciting program in conjunction with Chodesh Nissan. (Yes, we know we’re a bit early.) Ask us why we looked at an optical illusion in Parsha this week!

Have a wonderful Shabbos!Miss MandelbaumEighth GradeAre you allowed to add or to subtract from a mitzvah?

No! But, why not? Maybe I love HaShem so much that I want to add to a mitzvah? Ask an 8th grade girl—she’ll tell you why!!

Mrs. IdsteinThe eighth graders are baruch HaShem deep into the

second perek! This week we got up to the next mishna. We have been discussing the status of a ger toshav. How did the topic of Avrohom and Avimelech come up?

Have a great ShabbosRabbi FriedlerMS Geography & History7th grade American History students are busy

completing their research on an immigrant group during the late 1880’s. They will be presenting their immigrant group during a culture fair next Tuesday. Look for upcoming announcements. Parents are invited to come.

8th grade Global Studies completed their unit on the Indian Caste System with an interactive activity and exit ticket essay. Next we will be exploring the landscape of this great nation.

Mrs. AmundsonMS Language ArtsSeventh grade finished the Nonfiction text, Great Fire.

Ask your 7th grader about the Great Fire newspaper they created in class. Eighth grade continues to work with the Literature Group on their class novels. Ask your 8th grader how they prepare for their Literature group.

Mrs. HechtmanMS MathematicsThis week, the section A class has been working on

simplifying algebraic expressions! With all the steps it can be challenging, but students are working hard and doing great. We will soon start solving one-step and two-step equations. In the Blended Learning class, most students are working in unit 4. Similar to the section A class they

are solving multi-step equations with variables on both sides. I am also excited that many students in the Blended class have started working on representing linear systems graphically.

Ms. WaringMS ScienceThis week in science we dove into the wonders

and mysteries of deep space. We started learning about observing deep space and the lives of stars. Students were enthralled with the way stars get bigger, collapse, and create incredibly dense things such as black holes!

Mrs. Lang

Rabbi Idstein’s Inspirational Morning Quotes! • People with goals succeed because they know where they are going!• Be happy with nothing and you will be happy with everything!• When you feel like quitting think about why you started!• For every minute you are angry you lose 60 seconds of happiness!• I already know what giving up feels like. Today I want to see what happens if I don’t!

Note: The students already have the details for the problem!

Middle School Purim Math Contest Dr Thorne is offering sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students a chance to win prizes by using their geometry skills! The question is how many Hamentaschen (triangular pyramids) will fit in a box (rectangular prism) to mail to family out of town ??????????

All entries must be in by Monday, March 18th. Prizes will be awarded on Tuesday, March 19th. Good luck to all!!

The Kolenu Parsha Page Did you Know? (Facts and Insights into the Parsha that you and the family might not have known – enjoy!)

• According to one opinion, Chazal established that we recite one hundred brachos daily to correspond to the one hundred Adanim which were in the Mishkan. (Ba’al HaTurim)

• Sheivet Binyamin was rewarded with the Yashfei stone on the Eiphod because he knew about Mechiras Yosef and could have told Yaakov about it [Yeish Peh – he had a mouth] but chose not to implicate his brothers. (Berashis Rabba 71:5)

• According to various opinions in Chazal, Mordechai’s Hebrew name was Malachi (Megilla 15a) or Pesachya (Menachos 65a).

• There are a number of views concerning the number of sons that Haman had: 30, 90, or 208! (Megillah 15b)

Torah Riddle -

Which kapitel in Tehillim is referenced in this week’s parsha? (Hint: Look in Rashi)Answer can be found below the Ayin Tova case!

Ayin Tova Case #17:

Raphy was tired at the end of the long school day and went to retrieve his bike which was locked up outside and ride the ten minutes home. Then he could relax a bit before homework and supper. When he reached his bike, he couldn’t locate the key to his bike lock. He searched and searched, yet came up empty handed. With no recourse, he set out on the twenty-five-minute walk, exhausted and frustrated.

Help Raphy have Ayin Tova for his situation. 😊😊 Ayin Tova Case #16

Nomi needed some items from the store and planned on taking her three-year-old, Chaim, with her. He was agreeable to go if he could ride his tricycle through the aisles. Nomi gently explained that stores are crowded with people and tricycles are inappropriate there. Chaim accepted his mother’s words and went along without the bike. As they approached the store, they saw Chaim’s best friend, Aharon … riding his tricycle through the crowded aisles of the store. Nomi couldn’t believe it. She was both embarrassed and felt like she lied to her son.

Help Nomi have Ayin Tova for her situation. 😊😊

Suggestions for last week’s case: Maybe next time Nomi will let Chaim bring the bike to the store but park it by the entrance before they go in.../Different people do different things. Each family has its own rules of what is acceptable and what’s not. / It could be that Aharon’s mother was against him riding into the store, and now she could point to Chaim and teach Aharon what is proper conduct in a store.

Answers – Torah Riddle – Kapitel 90 - Look at Rashi on 39:43.
