From the Pastor

Peace be with you.

Bishop Walter J. Edyvean was buried last week. He was an auxiliary bishop of Boston and a dear friend of mine. On Wednesday I had the privilege of vesting him and on Friday I was present at his funeral. Saying I “vested” him is a tradition of priests and bishops. When a priest dies, his brother priests who were close to him go to the funeral home and after the funeral director has done their work, the priests place the liturgical attire on the body (i.e. alb, stole, chasuble). I have vested a few priests close to me over the years, most memorably my uncle who was a priest, Fr. David Delaney. This was the first time I vested a brother bishop and it was a profound honor.

Bishop Edyvean was my teacher in seminary. His lectures were not the most dynamic because he spoke directly from his notes. However, any time he was asked a question, his answers were wonderful for their theological subtlety. Bishop Edyvean was later assigned to the Vatican where he worked in the Congregation for Education. We both came back from Rome about the same time; I came back from obtaining a degree in Canon Law and he came back to be the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Boston and a bishop. We lived together in Brighton and spent a lot of time with each other. I became one of his two Masters of Ceremony which means I accompanied him to Confirmations and helped him during the ceremonies. I did that until I myself was made a bishop some 15 years later. I estimate that I heard him give the same homily over 600 times. He read that homily each time and it was a very good theological explanation of Confirmation, but once again I most enjoyed our car rides together where I drove him and asked him countless questions which he always answered solidly and brilliantly.

One Confirmation I remember because it made me laugh. Towards the end Bishop Edyvean was hard of hearing so I would stand next to him to make sure he heard the Confirmation name properly. A young woman came up and her sponsor told the Bishop that the name she chose was “Shannon”. Bishop Edyvean said “What?” “Shannon” was repeated louder, but with great confusion he turned to me and so I yelled in his ear “SHANNON!” With a look of resignation he turned and with his usual great dignity Confirmed her “Shadow” - no wonder he looked so confused.

Above all, Bishop Edyvean was a scholar and a gentleman. He loved a good joke, and he loved anything Italian. The name “Edyvean” is Welsh, but his love for Italy was paramount. He was a world wide expert on Saint Pope Paul VI, and spoke and wrote perfect Italian. One last story that he himself loved to have me tell to any new audience. Although his Italian was perfect, mine was anything but. Once when I was working in the Chancery as Bishop Edyvean’s assistant for Canon Law, a bride was to be married in Sicily. I needed to give the Archdiocese’s permission for her to be married there. The bride was worried because her old Sicilian pastor insisted that the permission had to be in Italian. I assured the bride that this was no problem. So I wrote the letter in English and simply gave it to Bishop Edyvean who translated into perfect Italian - even better than that, it was perfect Vatican Italian which is a special kind of skill. Bishop Edyvean did his usual perfect job and told me to just add the date and send it. Two months later I get a call from the bride from Sicily. She was calling for two reasons: 1. She wanted to tell me how much the old priest appreciated the letter - she said he could tell I studied in Rome!; 2. Unfortunately, the letter had the wrong date (i.e. the only thing I contributed). He chuckled every time he heard the story.

The cross I wear everyday was designed by Pope Paul VI and was a gift from Bishop Edyvean. His friendship and kindnesses and theological explanations to me were other gifts. I shall miss him. May He Rest In Peace.

Blessings on you and your families,

Bishop Mark

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus invites the disciples who have been fishing all night

to “put out into the deep. . .” Despite their fatigue, they

do as Jesus asks because they have faith in him. He not

only rewards them with a large catch of fish, but he

instructs them to be fishers of men (and women). Today

Jesus invites us to take a leap of faith, to take to heart his

words that we are to reach out to others and draw them

to Christ. To whom will you reach out to in faith?
