SERMON NOTES

DATE OF SERMON: 12 Feb SERMON TITLE/TEXT: Outrageous Greetings/Isaiah 40:9 SPEAKER: Stephen Chan As we celebrate the Chinese New Year with our friends and family, let us grasp the opportunities to evangelise to our loved ones, returning to the central dogma of the gospel and embodying the image of Christ. What is the good news? According to Isaiah 40, the good news is an invitation to be comforted, forgiven and

reconciled. Central to the good news is that salvation is open to all who choose to believe in Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

As Isaiah 40:5 says, God’s glory will be revealed to all His people. Thus, it is imperative for us to spread the good news and proclaim God’s message,

especially during this Chinese New Year season when we meet our relatives. How should we do so?

Preaching the Good News To start off, let the good news be seen.

Some of us may be apprehensive to preach the good news to others. However, we should not be ashamed, knowing the power that resides in the good

news – Roman 1:16 declares the power of God in bringing us to salvation. Furthermore, it is crucial that we spread the good news to many as possible and be

heard. Mark 16:15 reminds us of our duty and calling to preach the gospel to all creation.

Finally, let us be bold and declare the good news with conviction and confidence. As the Lord commands in Joshua 1:9, let us be strong and courageous in preaching

the gospel. However, more than mere speech, it is important to demonstrate our faith

through our deed. Returning to the central dogma of the gospel, we can do so through loving, forgiving, reconciling and offering an invitation to non-believers in our midst.

Show Outrageous Love 1 John 3:18 compels us to show our love not only in words or speech but with action

or truth. We can do so by extending acts of love to those around us, especially to those who may have hurt or are seemingly undeserving of love.

In doing so, we can give others a glimpse of the agape, unconditional love that God extends to us, thereby embodying the faith. Indeed, we love because God first loved us.

But how can we know that God loves us? John 3:16 clearly outlines how God loved us so much that He gave His one and only Son for us sinners to enjoy eternal life and salvation.

SERMON NOTES

Extend Outrageous Forgiveness As we recite in the Lord’s Prayer: forgive us our debtors as we forgive our debtors. While we may hold on to anger and grudges due to our pride, we should forgive

because God first forgave us. In the words of CS Lewis, “…if God forgives us we must forgive ourselves. Otherwise, it is almost like setting up ourselves as a higher tribunal than him.”

And this applies to all of us as all have sinned. Romans 3:23-24 gravely notes that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God due to mankind’s sinful nature.

Having received the boundless grace of God, it is on us to similarly extend it to others. Make Outrageous Reconciliation During the Sermons on the Mount, Jesus declared in the Beatitudes that blessed are

the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God (Matthew 5:9) Notably, forgiveness is not encompass reconciliation: after forgiving, we need to take

the first step to make amends in order to heal our relationship. Otherwise, the relationship will remain broken.

While it is not easy to take the initiative, let us remember that Christ died for us while we were still sinners and had first loved us, even if we did not.

Conclusion Let us extend an outrageous invitation, be it a colleague or a relative and reach out to them in the love of Christ.
