by Donald “Don” E. Beaver, Jr., CCM, CCE - Club Manager

t the time of authoring this column, the weather

is darn near perfect for both tennis and golf, and both the LSU Tigers and Saints are winning at an eye-popping pace!

Tennis leads the monthly calendar with their largest fund-raiser of the year. The Boys’ and Girls’ Hope Tennis Tournament will be contested Thursday, November 8th through Sunday, November 11th.

Golf EventsGolfers will enjoy a number of events including three BCLGA Wednesday events, a Putter Demo Day on Saturday, November 10th, LWGA Championships on November 10th and 11th, the year’s final BCCC Men’s Member Flighted Tournament on Saturday, November 17th and introductory golf (SNAG) for the youngsters during Thanksgiving break – November 19th – 21st.

Dining HighlightsAs for the social side of our calendar, our monthly Bingo Night is slated for Wednesday, November 14th where you and/or the kids can try your hand at one or more of the 10 bingo cash jackpots while enjoying a delicious buffet dinner.

Next up, we will be pairing the hand-crafted wines of Justin Vineyards with a reception and a spectacular five-course gourmet dinner specially created by

Executive Chef David Ramey for just $75/person on Friday, November 16th from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Attendees will not only be treated to a splendid culinary evening, but will also have the one-time opportunity to purchase the highlighted wine at cost + 15%, a deal that is just too good to beat. (Note: Evening Sitter Service will be available.)

Speaking of that day, for those of you who are placing orders from our Thanksgiving catering menu, all orders must be picked up by Wednesday, November 21st.

Of course, November is not the same without our annual Thanksgiving Feast and Beau Chêne CC is out to make that happen. Whether you choose to dine at the Club or order from our catering menu, we are proud to be a part of this family tradition (See Chef David’s article for catering options.). Naturally, our Thanksgiving Buffet Feast will be served on Thursday, November 22nd and from 11am to 2pm (see the front page for menu) all for just $38/adult and $17/child ages 4 to 12 and free under 4. This should give you plenty of time to get across the causeway prior to the 7:30pm kick-off to cheer for our Saints against their arch-rival, the Atlanta Falcons.

Food and beverage can be enjoyed at more than just the special social events at BCCC. Check out the many dining options that are offered every week for your consideration:

• Both our Wednesday and Thursday Evenings with their featured value-centric

From the Manager

A entrees are designed to give you, the BCCC member, an opportunity to casually dine quicker and more economically than on weekends. Of course, we also offer our full a la carte menu in addition to those specials.

• Fridays are always popular with the 4-7pm Happy Hour, the weekly Bar Bites and the weekend specials that complement our full a la carte menu that is served in both the Oak Grill and Morgan’s Thursday – Saturday evenings, unless a private event pre-empts service in Morgan’s.

• Finally, there is near unanimity about the fresh and expanded Sunday Brunch Buffet served 9am to 1pm that has been offered the last several months.

Reminder: Please remember we “gain” an hour of sleep as Daylight Savings Time ends as of Sunday, November 4th.

December EventsDecember is always popular for traditional holiday/family events and in an effort to assist you with planning, (i.e., you may want to make your reservations early to guarantee a spot) please be aware of the following events/dates:

• A new event, Christmas Open House, (adults only), will be held on Friday, December 14th from 6:30pm to 9pm. Honestly, I stole this idea from Metairie CC some 20 years ago and it has been a big hit everywhere I have managed. Members and their guests are invited to attend in their Christmas finery – whether that it is dressy attire, funny sweaters,

lighted necklaces, Santa hats, antlers, etc. – and enjoy free-flowing open bars (bar and call brands along with a variety of wines and beer); multiple action food stations – that will provide attendees with a “full dinner” utilizing carving and sauté stations, plus desserts. Christmas carols will be performed by the extremely talented ensemble, Bon Operatit, where members will have the option to sing along – all for the price of $50/person for those making reservations no later than December 12th and $60/person at the door (Dec. 14th). Sitter service will be available during the event. Speaking from experience, this will become a new and exciting tradition at Beau Chêne Country Club!

• Two Breakfasts with Santa will be held on consecutive days from 9am to 11am, on Saturday, December 8th and Saturday, December 15th. Additional details will be provided in next month’s newsletter.

• We will provide a pre-Christmas feast complete with a live pianist performance on Sunday, December 23rd with our special Christmas Eve Grand Buffet – served from 11am – 2pm – leaving everyone time to get to the 3:30pm kick-off for the Steelers at Saints game.

• In recognition of the many members who will be hosting family members, we will open the golf course, golf shop and Oak Grill on Monday, December 24th, but only until 2pm.• In keeping with recent tradition, BCCC Continued on page 6

Then on October 10, Neil shot two shots better with a great score of 74 which was witnessed by Nick Trist, Royce Dunn, and Bob Case.

Monty Hall shot one better than his age on October 3, while playing in the same group as Neil Wiseman. Monty shot 78 which was witnessed by Tom Terrell, and Neil Wiseman.

Fall Junior Tennis LeagueWith regards to Coach Oscar’s fall junior tennis league, it has been a huge success with the kids and we’ve seen tremendous improvement among our juniors. This league, the first of its kind here at Beau Chêne, has gotten some of these kids learning to play matches for the first time and for some of our more experienced players, it has provided them with regular competitive matches as well. Coach Oscar plans to run this league again in the Spring so please be on the lookout!

t’s November and the holidays are already upon us! Boy how quickly

this year has gone by.

November is a month of thanksgiving, it’s a time to pause and reflect on how important and precious our family is. At Beau Chêne our community is our family. I’m very grateful and appreciative to be a part of this family and totally enjoy helping you with your health and fitness goals.

Two for OneFor the month of November, I would like to offer a 2 for 1 sale for personal training for 4 weeks as a big “Thank You” to all who have joined our Fitness Program. So grab a friend and get some personalized attention each week for 1 hour and let’s get fit for the holidays!I’m so excited to see so many people coming on a regular basis to workout.

This month I would like to highlight a couple who has been coming not only to the fitness center to workout, but also come to most all of our group classes and who play tennis as well, Barbara and John Pasqua. What’s that saying? Couples who work out together, stay together… There are many couples I see coming to the gym who work out together. It’s such a great way to connect, motivate, encourage and support each other for a healthy lifestyle. It’s very hard for a lot of people to stay on their regimen of exercise and eating healthy, so when you have a partner who has the same goals as you it makes it so much easier. This month I highlight Barbara and John as our Fitness Couple of the month.

Fitness News

IMary Piper, Fitness Director

Fitness Coupleof the Month

John & Barbara Pasqua

How long have you all been Beau Chêne Fitness Members?Since the opening of the Fitness Center.

How long have you been working out together? We’ve worked out for 4 years together.

Have both of you always been into fit-ness? It was off and on until a few years ago.John: “I’ve always run, biked and golfed. Barbara: “I’ve played tennis for 20+ years”.

What made you decide to join the Fit-ness Center? The convenience and cost definitely influ-enced our decision. 18 hours/day accessi-bility, close to home, tennis facility, and golf was ideal. Working out with friends and neighbors is a bonus.

Did you have any fitness or weight loss goals? Barbara: “I was looking to improve my strength and flexibility for tennis”.John: “My goals were for greater flexibility and weight loss”.

What classes do you take together?Circuit Training, Sculpt, Gentle Stretch Yoga. Barbara: “I like Posture & Balance class”. John: “I like Kettlebell and TRX.”

Do you find there are benefits working out together as husband and wife?John: “Yes, because it helps to nudge each other, although we can be competitive with one another, which is generally help-ful too.”

Would you encourage couples to work out together? If so, what would you tell them?Barbara: “It may or may not be for every-one, but worth the effort to try, realizing that starting off slowly and building may be the best approach.”

Statistics show that most people start off great when they join a gym but then af-ter a month or 2 never go back. What motivates you both to keep going?John: “We like the social aspects of the group classes, and we like the energy we gain from exercise.”

How do you feel incorporating fitness into your lifestyle has helped in other ways besides physically? Barbara: “Great, when I couldn’t work out this summer due to an injury, it was

easy to get depressed. Mentally, exercise provides a release of tension and yoga is great for learning to relax.”

What would you say to people who are residents but are not Fitness Members at Beau Chêne?John: “It is certainly a bargain price-wise and the convenience will allow you to ex-ercise more, even if just for shorter periods of time.”

Do you have any advice you can offer to those who want to start with a fitness program but just can’t seem to make that first step?Barbara: “Everyone always thinks they will look silly or slow others down, but when doing a program/class you realize everyone is so focused on themselves, they do not care about others. Start slow and build!”

Golf Course MaintenanceTed Smith, Director of Agronomy

n the fall, as the temperature drops and day length and light intensity

decrease, the growth and vigor of our Bermudagrass slows down drastically. With lower growth rates, the recuperative ability of the turf is compromised and foot traffic and mechanical damage from mowers and other machinery may have detrimental effects if the greens are not cared for properly. In an effort to provide healthy greens, we will continue our weekly supplemental nutrient applications of Nitrogen, Potassium, Calcium and micronutrients. To maintain a balanced soil and improve winter hardiness and disease resistance in the turf, we will apply granular potassium fertilizer and gypsum once a month. This fertilizer program in combination with preventative fungicides and daily monitoring of soil moisture and disease will allow us to provide you with smooth, consistent putting surfaces.

This month, we will also be taking steps to improve the condition of the bunkers.

This project is labor intensive and will include removing the contaminated sand, re-grading the floor to provide proper slope to the outlet drains, and installing new drain pipe and gravel. In an effort to prevent the sand from washing out during heavy rain storms, the shape of the bunkers will be slightly modified to include more sod and less sand on the bunker faces (steep slopes). This design modification will help reduce maintenance inputs and extend the life of the bunkers by reducing the amount of silt from the subsurface that contaminates the sand and migrates downward through the profile, therefore, clogging the underlying drain network. Weather permitting, we plan to commence this project by renovating the greenside bunkers on #2 Oak. As a friendly reminder, please remember to adhere to cart path rulings, repair ball marks on greens and fill your divots with sand. Following these rules and practicing proper course etiquette will go a long way in helping us maintain course conditions. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to send an email to [email protected].

appy November!

As the weather changes and flu season is approaching please make sure your kids are washing their hands regularly, as it is one of the best ways to keep from spreading germs. Encouraging them to cough or sneeze into their arm is another way to prevent germs from spreading. The safety of your children is our number one priority at the childcare, so we will continue to clean toys frequently and use healthy precautions to maintain a clean and healthy environment for the kids.

Since this is the month to be thankful, I just want to share that this year I am so grateful and thankful to have met some amazing

Please note that we will be open for evening sitter service on the evening of Friday, November 16th for those parents who may wish to attend the Justin Wine Dinner. Also, we will be closed November 22nd for Thanksgiving Holiday. Hope you all have a safe and fun holiday.
