FROM THE PRINCIPAL Lisa Morresey
Greetings to you all, talofa lava, malo e lelei, bula vinaka, fakaalofa lahi atu, kia orana, fakatalofa atu, malo ni, anyong haseyo, namste, kia ora koutou katoa. Nau mai, haere mai ki Te Kura Takawaenga o Mauao. Welcome to Mount Maunganui Intermediate School, 2020. For those of you who do not know me, my name is Lisa Morresey and I am very proud to be the principal of Mount Maunganui Intermediate School. I have been the principal at MMI since July 2010. I feel very fortunate to work with such a positive and dynamic team, in a diverse and supportive school community and to have the opportunity to work with emerging adolescents, on a daily basis. No day is ever the same! Roll Growth - Our roll has grown again and in 2020. We have 392 year 7’s and 370 year 8’s, with 21 international students from Switzerland and South Korea. Due to the number of staff who are currently on parental leave, roll growth and Community of Learning positions, we welcome nine new staff, in 2020. Welcome to Danielle Craill, Ashleen Fahy, Sandy Hubers, Shannon Kingsland, Jordan Langton, Bronwyn Marshall, Kristie Rihia, Natalie Workman and Jo Weldon. Communication - As a school community, I encourage you to continue to be involved in your child’s education. If you have any worries or concerns about any aspect of your child’s schooling, contact your child’s teacher sooner, rather than later. Teachers can be contacted by their school email or you can call the main office and be transferred to their classroom, outside of class contact hours. If you feel that these concerns may not have been addressed, then please contact a member of the leadership team. I do have an open door policy and I will always endeavour to meet with you, as the need arises. Please do not hesitate to pop in, or make an appointment to meet with me. Transparency - I will always communicate openly with the school community about issues and concerns involving student behaviour and happenings in the school. I will respect the privacy of individuals, but I will communicate concerns and what we are proactively doing, as a school, to address any issues that do arise. We communicate in this way to allay any parental concerns, to dispel rumours and as a teaching tool for our students. Bullying and Inappropriate Behaviour - This is the first time that the Mount Maunganui and Papamoa community comes together as one. This, coupled with the age and stage of emerging adolescent’s, means that we can expect some challenging times, as the small minority test the expectations and boundaries in our school. I have included the Kia Maia Code of Practice and the Majors and Minors Chart later in the newsletter, so that students and parents are aware of the school wide expectations and behaviour plan. If you have any concerns about student behaviour, friendship issues, bullying or other issues, please contact us immediately. We cannot deal with concerns unless we know about them. Also, if you or child needs additional support or TLC, we need to know that too. We have a zero tolerance approach to bullying and we work with students and families to address friendship issues, disagreements, name calling and bullying. All schools have incidents of bullying at times and bullies can only bully in secret. Students can speak openly to any of the adults in our school or come to chat with me. They can also email [email protected].

School Donations Scheme - We have opted into the School Donation Scheme in 2020. This means that the government will contribute $150 per child to our school operations grant, based upon the 2019 July roll return. We have opted into the government scheme, in good faith, in order to reduce the burden on families. In 2019, we asked families for a school donation, specialist fees and fees for day trips and education outside the classroom (camps). In 2020, we cannot ask for any fees related to curriculum, with one exception. We can ask families to make a voluntary donation towards the cost of camp. We believe that EOTC/School Camps is a very important part of the curriculum for emerging adolescents. All children will attend school camp regardless of whether camp fee donation is paid or not, however, we are sincerely hoping that as many families will make the voluntary camp donation in 2020. We may not be able to sustain the EOTC/School Camp programme if we do not receive your support, in order to cover costs. Click here to read about the school donation scheme: https://www.education.govt.nz/assets/Documents/School/donations/MOE-Donations-Scheme-Info-A3-FA-Web-2-DEC.PDF Further detail of our EOTC camp programme has been included in the newsletter. Have a wonderful week. Naau te rourou, Naaku te rourou, Kaa ora te iwi, With my food basket, And my food basket, The tribe will thrive and flourish. Kia ora mai tatou, Lisa Morresey Principal

WHOLE SCHOOL INQUIRY FOR TERM 1
Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua:
‘I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past’
This term the whole school is participating in an inquiry which looks at how the past influences the
present and the future. We discovered two artefacts buried in our garden; one a tea chest, and the
other a kete. The students have spent some time wondering what might be in these historic time
capsules and their curiosity has been piqued.
The key understandings for this inquiry are:
● NZ today is influenced by the Tangata Whenua of the land and subsequent migrants.
● People remember historical events with different lenses (perspective).
● Student driven inquiry.
During the term we will be going for a trip to the Elms Mission Station, visiting the Mount College
Marae and touring Pukehinahina to learn about the Battle of Gate Pa. The staff visited The Elms and
the marae during their teacher only day and are excited about what it offers to our inquiry.
There is a great buzz in the school grounds and we are looking forward to seeing how our students
develop this inquiry.
If you are able to add value to our inquiry please come in, or contact us, as we would love to have
our community involved.

CAMP INFORMATION Historically, students have had the option of two alternate camp experiences. In 2020, due to the whole school moving to composite classes, each class will be going to camp with their house/motu group. This means that there are some children who may go back to Ngatuhoa in 2020. Teachers are aware of this and will plan and alter the camp plans accordingly. Organisationally, it is just too difficult to have classes split, dependent on their 2019 camp. We understand that some children may be disappointed but we know that they will enjoy the camp experience, no matter where they go. We are no longer offering the sibling discount (apologies to those classes who were misinformed of this) as we are now only allowed to request donations to cover the cost of camps.
Costs Ngatuhoa $120 Finlay $250 Waitawheta $135

POLICE VETTING SCHOOL PARENTS
The BOT has revised its Child Protection procedures, and in the interests of pupil safety, all parents likely
to help in the school, will be encouraged to undertake a police vetting check.
The Board of Trustees hugely appreciates the excellent support that parents provide to our staff and
pupils. If, as a parent helper, it is likely you could participate with pupils in an unsupervised position, or
you provide transport for other children, then you are encouraged to undertake a police vet.
Examples of the types of activities requiring parent police vetting are:
sports coaching/management
transporting pupils to events beyond the school eg class trips, elite sports events, competitions,
tournaments
parent help on school camps
If you would like to read about the police vetting process, please go to:
http://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publication/online-vetting-user-guide
The police vetting process takes approximately 3 weeks to complete and will remain current for a period
of two years.
The police vetting forms are included with this newsletter and are also available at the school office.
Once completed, please return confidentially to Karen McGovern – [email protected], who
will then processes your police vet through the online police vetting service.
NB Proof of identity is also required, please attached a copy of your drivers license.

Summer, Sun and Softball!
The Western Bay of Plenty Softball Association has Softball and T-Ball available as the perfect summer sport. It’s easy to learn and play, only involves a couple of hours a week and very inexpensive to play.
Junior Softball season starts again on 8th February for Term One 2020 and we would love to see you at the park, enjoying Softball. Beginners are very welcome and don’t worry about having a glove at this stage, but please wear trainers.
Games are on a Saturday, at Carlton St Reserve, Ngatai Road, Otumoetai from 9am and run between 1 hour (U8 T-Ball, U10 Primary Softball) and 1:30 hours (U13 Intermediate and U15/U18 College Softball) - age cut off being 31st December 2019. The season runs through to 21st March 2020.
Ask your school sports person if the school has a Softball team first or come down to the park on Saturday 8th or 15th February at 8.30am and we can put your child into a team.
