Invitation ‘Webinar Meat Chinas Demand - 2030’
Meat China’s demand
Past, present and future
Webinar MCD-2030
Webinar ‘Meat China’s Demand – 2030’
As a MSc student of Sustainable Agriculture and
Food Security of the University of East Anglia in
Norwich, United Kingdom, I am pleased to invite
you to the Webinar ‘Meat China’s Demand – 2030’
to be held online on July 4th and July 17th . The
Webinar is part of my dissertation on the
implications of the future of China’s meat demand.
Together with a team of experts and stakeholders
we will explore the socio-economic and
environmental implications that influence the
future of China’s meat demand through scenario
writing for the year 2030.
Scenario writing is a relatively new methodology
that is getting more and more attention as a
means to explore future trends in complex policy
arenas where formal predictions are difficult.
Scenario writing is beneficial for the participants as
well as for policy and decision makers to learn
what the future can offer and what needs to be
done to avoid negative outcomes.
Aim of the study and why is
it important?
The aim of the webinar is to
explore how socio-economic
and environmental
implications of the Chinese
production and consumption
of animal protein will evolve
from now until 2030. China is
currently the biggest
producer of meat in the world,
and has seen a true livestock
revolution in the last three
decades; the revolution has
not stopped yet. However,
China’s livestock revolution
potentially brings severe environmental and socio-
economic problems. By exploring how these
socio-economic and environmental implications
might evolve in the future, scenario writing helps
stakeholders to contribute insights and visions for
what their sector can look like. In addition it gives
policy and decision makers an idea of the
consequences of production methods and
consumption trends of animal protein.
Why should you be involved?
Scenario writing is an important method to enable
stakeholders to think more creatively about the
future, enhance appreciation of the
interconnectivity of processes and stakeholders at
different levels and encourage more proactive
attitudes towards decision making and policy
change.
How does it work?
The Webinar ‘Meat China’s Demand – 2030’ will
take place in an online workspace called Teambox.
All you have to do to join is send me an email
stating that you would like to participate in the
core scenario writing team (CSWT). There is a
possibility to join the core writing team
anonymously as well. After you submitted to the
webinar an open ended questionnaire will be send
to you to give your thoughts on key drivers of
change. The questionnaire should take you no
more than 5 minutes to complete.
Before the online webinar starts, you will be sent a
comprehensive report on past trends and
consequences of China’s livestock industry so you
can orientate yourself on past trends. During the

Invitation ‘Webinar Meat Chinas Demand - 2030’ live webinar you can interact with your core
scenario writing team in a text-based chat to
discuss ideas, knowledge and views about the
impacts of the key drivers. If you are not available
on this date you can participate in the group
discussion by adding your valuable input and
feedback on others in your own time, at any time
from July 4th until July 10th. Time schedule of the
webinar:
After this discussion, based on your inputs, I will
construct four scenarios which will be added to
Teambox for you to review and provide feedback
on as you wish. The second round will be on the
17th of July and will focus on backcasting which
involves identifying, what we need to do today to
reach successful outcomes and avoid negative
ones. This can involve the identification of policies
at regional levels to enhance positive elements
and attenuate negative ones. The composition of
the core scenario writing team will consist of
specialised scientists, NGOs and stakeholders. The
variety of the team will ensure that the scenarios
are based on a range of views rather than the
representation of the status quo.
The final report is aimed at being a guideline for
policy and decision makers of the future of the
production and consumption of animal protein. I
would like to try to get my thesis published, and I
will add the core scenario writing team as co-
authors to the publication, if they are interested in
this.
