Smart Housing Småland is a 10-year program that aims to highlight potential innovation environments. In July 2013, the project received funding from the Vinnova Vinnväxt Programme and began its work in autumn 2013.

[What is our mission] A winning innovation environment • New ways to combine glass and wood creates new values for future smart housing. • Smart means housing and built environment that is desirable, flexible, durable and affordable. • The innovation environment redirects a technology-driven industry to a market-focused business with increased service content. New ways to combine glass and wood are central to the strategic concept. Transparent intelligent glass products are combined with new bio-based materials, and industrial construction for increased functionality, attractiveness and environmental benefits (including energy efficiency). Building on the existing strengths of wood and glass, new forms of collaboration between industry, academia and the public sector are created. In our environments for testing and demonstration, new values in the form of products, services and business models that are globally competitive will be created. Housing construction as an industrial process – move construction from the building site to the industry = more cost-effective construction, higher quality.

By establishing communication forum between the companies of the core group, researchers and students, users and clients, development opportunities can be identified and partnerships created. Pilot studies and business development projects will demonstrate innovation opportunities. Short-term projects with quick decision-making. The intention is for companies to develop their business and to create a continued willingness / ability of the company to develop individually and in networks. Projects are largely initiated through venues. Prototypes and demonstration projects will create demand and interest from customers and users of innovations that bring smarter construction and housing with high architectural values and thus commercialization. Individual products and components as well as the whole housing prototypes. Urban Development projects should stimulate innovations in urban development with focus on housing. Projects both in Sweden and internationally to create a demand for innovations in customer-/client side and in municipalities. [Why Småland (Sector map shows the clustering)] Why in Småland? Why now? Småland is a center for construction and development in wood and glass. In Småland or in direct vicinity is the largest clustering of glass and wood which creates a unique platform for the development of this innovation environment. In addition, there are relevant research and a strong backing from public organizations in Småland. This effort is also done at a time when the housing crisis increases and pressure on housing, especially in cities, is great. This creates an opportunity for development in Sweden and, with this as a base, also internationally.

[Who can participate – Critera] Open to all but at least one company and academy / institute in Småland is a mandatory requirement. Priority is given to proposals that develop the innovation environment by: - Open projects (ie, that the project is public and transparent). Trade secrets can be protected but transparency is important and a priority for knowledge to be disseminated and used by others. - Several companies involved. A high proportion of own business action is deemed positive. Companies are expected to put in working effort in the projects. Smart Housing Småland will primarily fund the costs of academies / institutes in projects that support the participating companies. Although the cost of consultants / architects can be funded if they do not have their own business interests in the projects.
