M O N S M ! Matthew Camp — Administrative Assistant For the earlier part of my life I lived in the Northwest, spending a fair bit of time helping out the family farm in Montana. Once I finished homeschooling my way through everything prior to college, I went to Christendom College in Front Royal, VA, which I graduated from in 2013 with a BA in History. After living on the east coast for nearly two-and-a-half years, I returned home to my family in Montana. Shortly after moving home, I got engaged to my wonderful fiancée, Therese, who moved down to Phoenix for her work. Through a process of prayer, discernment, and job hunting, God provided the opportunity for me to join the wonderful staff here at Corpus Christi. I moved down to Phoenix mid-July, following my fiancée, and feel very blessed to be a part of this devout parish. I really enjoy music and have studied piano and singing extensively, and have also learned to play the organ. I look forward to seeing you at Mass and around the parish! Cristin Kern — Office Clerk I am an Ahwatukee native and am grateful to be back in my home parish with my son, Jackson, after many years away. I graduated from Xavier in 2004 (go Gators!) and received my B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona in 2007 (Bear Down!). Afterwards, I worked as a Research Assistant at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA in cell biology and neuroscience followed by a few years at Novartis in automated cancer diagnostics. I am currently a medical student at Midwestern University with an interest in Pediatrics and disease prevention. I have greatly enjoyed my first month as the evening Office Clerk, as it has helped balance the many stresses of school. I am looking forward to learning how I can serve our Catholic community. Kathy Luger — Director of Evangelization Greetings, Corpus Christi parishioners! I am so excited to be here as a new member of the staff working in evangelization! I cannot imagine a better calling than to walk with you in deepening your relationship with the Lord. What motivates me is the incredible invitation which the Lord extends to each of us to share in His own life and spend eternity in the fullness of joy and complete fulfillment of our deepest desires.

I come to Corpus Christi having worked and volunteered at the parish-level, the diocese, and university Newman Center, as well as in international and humanitarian aid, and in the business field. I have directed formation from children’s catechesis up through adults, worked in Catholic social teaching, marriage preparation, youth ministry, clergy formation and have led a Catholic non-profit that serves African youth living in poverty. My passion is helping others to come to know Jesus more intimately and live a holy and virtuous life.

I am truly looking forward to getting to know you and growing together in love of the Lord and service of our neighbor! Thank you so much for your warm welcome!

CATHOLIC EDUCATION

Atrium — Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Would you like to help your child

enjoy a relationship with God?

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in Sacred Scripture, Liturgy, and

respect for the child’s rich relationship with God. Central to CGS is the Atrium, a room containing beautiful materials that focus the child’s attention on key scripture passages or liturgical moments. After an introduction by the catechist, the children are invited to work with a material on their own to continue their meditation. Because children learn by using their hands, working with materials allows them to enter more deeply into meditation, nurturing their relationship with God.

Atrium is offered for children 3-5 years of age on Tuesdays at 9:30-11:00 AM and 4:15-5:45 PM, as well as on Wednesdays at 9:30-11:00 AM.

For more information, please contact the CE Office at 480-893-1160.

Caring, kind, compassionate people who like to work with young people.

Reward Offered: Joy, Satisfaction & Purpose!

Catechists ar e needed for var ious Catholic Education sessions. Training is provided.

Corpus Christi will be hosting B C programs to help our kids grow in V

Boys - Ages 5 to 8 (Fathers encouraged to attend)

The Blue Knights is a national Catholic boys club that teaches the concept of Knighthood based on VIRTUE. Boys have a great time participating in this program and growing in their faith. The

first year program builds a suit of armor - the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, etc... The highlight of the year is the “Knights of the Round Table Celebration” for the boys, fathers, priests, grandfathers & godfathers.

Girls - Ages 5 to 8 (Mothers encouraged to attend) The Little Flowers is a national Catholic girls club which teaches them VIRTUES. Each month they will memorize a scripture verse, complete crafts and earn badges. This exciting program helps girls become who God desires them to be. The highlight of the year is a “Tea Party” that the girls host for their mothers, grandmothers, godmothers and religious sisters. M :T S M B A .20

WHY AREN’T MORE MEN KNIGHTS? The real question is: Why aren’t more CATHOLIC men, Knights? Seriously, we’d like to know. We would like to address REAL reasons, not excuses.

What can current Knights do to assist Catholic men, 18 years of age or older to

join the brotherhood of men dedicated to the serving God and His church through the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism?

In the Garden of Gethsemani, when Jesus found his disciples asleep, He remarked, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Perhaps, today’s society, with its electronic devices and multiple distractions, is lulling many Catholic men into a false sense of spirituality. Maybe many Catholic men visualize themselves as a disciple but lack the courage to actually be one.

The Corpus Christi Knights of Columbus has over 50 activities/projects that can use the time and talent of men who really want to serve God, Church, and community. Wait no longer, contact any active Knight for an application or contact Grand Knight Dave Rak at 602-579-7500 or [email protected].

FIRST DEGREE INSTALLATIONS As a matter of information, The Honors of the First Degree (Initiation) are tentatively scheduled for the last Saturday of each month, i.e., August 27th, Sept. 24th, etc.

COUNCIL MEETING REMINDER The Knights of Columbus, Corpus Christi Council 10062 will conduct its next business meeting on Thursday, August 4th at 7:00 pm in Rooms 5 & 6. ALL members are encouraged to attend and participate.

LEADERSHIP/PLANNING MEETING On Thursday, August 20th, at 7:00 pm, ALL members of the Council are invited to participate in the monthly meeting to discuss upcoming events, how many men are needed for successful execution, and other related matters. It is also the best time to discuss topics for inclusion in the next business meeting (Sept 1st).

The Jubilee Year of Mercy Dec.8, 2015 -Nov. 20, 2016

A scriptural reflection by Father Anthony Giambrone, O.P.

“Son of David, have pity on us!” The two blind men in Matthews Gospel (9:27-31) broadcast in stereo a firm messianic faith. Christ is not addressed simply as “Hey Mister.” He is recognized as the embodiment of the promised mercy of the Lord. When the blind man in Jericho calls out the same words, Jesus asks, “What do you want?” (Luke 18:41) and with good reason. “Have mercy!” was a panhandling formula. Like us, most beggars surely asked far too little of the Lord: a dime for a cup of coffee, when the Creator of all things stood ready at their service. As beggars in Matthew call out, however, the Lord simply asks, “Do you believe that I can do this?” When we cry out for mercy, we must not be so cramped in our expectations that we make God parsimonious with his gifts. [The Lord] became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich (2 Cor 8:9). The Lord longs to lavish upon us everything he has — to empty his pockets in proportion to our belief. “Let it be done for you according to your faith,” (Matthew 9:29). Let us, then, beg for a full flood of light to heal our darkness.

What does it mean to be a registered parishioner? How do I register? All Catholics living within the Parish and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs.

Adult children, 18+, need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get mar r ied, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors.

Also, in order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program.

You can register by coming to the Parish Office and filling out a short registration form. The registration form can also be downloaded from our parish website.

How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. Preparation classes are also required for parents prior to the child’s Baptism.

How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at 480-893-8770 DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as “Last Rites,” waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive.

How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.
