BASIC IDEA FOR INNOVATIVE DETECTORS

The Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) for applications such as the detection of very faint sources and very fast transient phenomena alone are not sufficient, and thus different detectors are needed.

5

There is a strong need for a significant R&D advances in technological areas as:• integrated optics • wavefront assessment and control • high speed and efficient IR and optical detectors• specialised electronic integrated circuit (ASIC and FPGA)G. DETECTORS CHARACTERIZATION• Characterization of detectors is of

fundamental importance when developing scientific instrumentation.

• The characterization is used to optimize and maximize the detector performance. That means, for example, choosing the best set of working parameters.

• Characterizing the detector allows also to supply the manufacturers with the feedback necessary to improve the detector's performances.

Temporal statistics of the photon streamThe temporal statistics of photon arrival times gives a measure of ordering (entropy) within the photon-stream, and its possible deviations from randomness.Such properties are reflected in the second- (and higher-) order coherence functions of light, observable as correlations between pairs (or a greater number) of photons. The information content lies in the correlation in time (or space) between successive photons in the arriving photon stream, and may be significant if the photon emission process has involved more than one photon at a time.

The activity has been started during the development of the CCD controllers for the TNG, collaborating with an electronic small business company located in La Spezia, and is continuing with the STM (see funds contract 2007) and various local hi-tech small companies (see funds UIT-INAF and POR Sicilia). This activity allows the companies to :• use of scientific methodologies on the development of their products,• realise scientific instruments by them self,• be able to make proposals for future instruments,• claim national/international patents on new devices.
