St. Paul in his letter to the

Philippians from which today’s sec-

ond reading is taken, puts the Palm

Sunday event in a beautiful per-

spective. Paul included this particu-

lar part, a hymn, to present an ex-

ample to follow in the daily trials of

Christian living. Despite its warn-

ings, Philippians is called the

“Epistle of Joy”. The short letter is so

warm and cheerful that the words

“joy” or “rejoice” appear about a

dozen times. It’s hard to envision

that Paul wrote most of it from jail,

and it’s very moving to realize that

Paul, right in the middle of the let-

ter, breaks out into today’s hymn.

The hymn is a summary of Jesus’

life, especially the mystery of free-

dom from sin and death, “the Gos-

pel in a nutshell”.

The joy of salvation over-

whelms suffering. A week’s events

in the life of Jesus are compressed

into one hour this Palm Sunday; the

story of triumphal entry of Jesus to

Jerusalem to the last supper, to Je-

sus’ arrest, crucifixion and burial.

Throughout this week we will reflect

on these important events in a less

hurried way. If

we could all get

to the Liturgy

on Holy Thurs-

day and Good Friday, we would not

need to hear the Passion read today,

but no everyone can get to church

during the week, so we need to hear

the Passion read today so we can

celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection next

Sunday.

‘Till then ¡Adios!

Fr. Brendan

Padre Brendan

Hosanna! Waving leafy branches, we proclaim Our King with exaltation. We celebrate the Pass-over meal with him, but then the ritual’s mean-ing stretches far beyond the meal itself: ordi-

nary bread and wine become the very presence of Jesus. We dare to keep watching with him in the garden, but we cannot bear his suffering.

We want to flee. Can we, however, follow Simon of Cyrene and Mary Magdalen and bide with Our King on the way of the cross? Can we join our trials to his, assured that he is with us al-

ways in the Eucharist? Isaiah 50:4-7; Philippians 2:6-11; Mark 14:1-

¡Hosanna! CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING-

SOLIDARITY

"Jesus preaches solidarity in his Ser-

mon on the Mount when the Son of

God tells the disciples he is the hun-

gry, the thirsty, the naked. Solidarity

begins with an encounter. People

practicing solidarity understand that

all of humanity is part of one family

'whatever our national, racial, eco-

nomic, and ideological differences

may be' (USCCB) The practice of soli-

darity demands that we tend to the

needs of ALL individuals, especially

the poor and vulnerable. As the say-

ing goes, when one hurts, we all hurt.

Pope John XXIII put solidarity to a

more global context, reminding peo-

ple that countries depend on each

other to prosper (Pacem in Terris).

Van a hablar sobre cómo notificar a

las personas que necesitan refugio,

los lineamientos de los refugios y el

personal.

DOCTRINA SOCIAL CATÓLICA -

SOLIDARIDAD

(Pacem in Terris). Jessie Bazan in US
