Saturn in Sagittarius

Experiential Wisdom?

Or "My Way or the Highway"?

By Wendy Guy

Saturn ventures into Sagittarius for almost 6 months, and returns to Scorpio for 3 months because he forgot to pack something for the long trip. He treks through Sagittarius again for another 2 years.

Last December marked his first entry into Sagittarius since 1985-1988. If you were born during that time, you're going through or heading into your first Saturn Return – a crossroads where you start to redefine

yourself as an adult and therefore must take more responsibility for what happens to you.

Before that, Saturn was in Sagittarius from 1956-1959. Those born during that time are at their second Saturn Return. This is again a crossroads where you reinvent yourself and reconstruct your life.

This time you build on the foundation of what you've already accomplished and regenerate or reinvent what is incomplete or didn't work out as planned.

And if you were born in 1926-1929, you're at your third Saturn Return. Not much is written about this transition time since not everyone makes it to age 88-ish. However, in the spirit of Saturn's agenda, this is probably a time of reassessment and reinvention too.

Contradictions Saturn being in Sagittarius is a contradiction. Saturn contracts and prunes back. Sagittarius expands and embellishes. Saturn is conservative and practical. Sagittarius is flamboyant and excessive.

Does the planet influence our experience of the sign, or does the sign influence our experience of the planet? The answer is: yes. The sign is like a piece of clothing with the

5

bare-naked planet underneath, but the same piece of clothing will also look very different depending on who's wearing it.

So how about this for a visual? Think a stone-faced Easter Island statue wearing a splendid King Louis XIV outfit. You can see that these two energies are a bit of an odd couple!

They can fight with each other or they can enhance each other – it all depends on how we use them. It also depends on what kind of circumstances and potential these energies find when they come knocking on the door of our lives.

The Saturn-ttarius Effects At its best, Saturn in Sagittarius can bring practical planning and disciplined methodology to grandiose ideas of possibilities and what-ifs. This is what makes it possible to bring dreams and inspiration into manifestation. With Saturn's hammer and nails of construction and structure, Sagittarian dreams can become reality.

On the other hand, at its worst Saturn could put a pessimistic, overly cautious damper on the Sagittarian optimism and faith, insisting that all must be proven and minimized to its lowest common denominator, and disparaging anything that isn't purely scientific or tried-and-true.

If this happens to you, check to see if the Saturn side of you may be trying to warn you about something in your blind spot. You can also watch to see if you're a bit afraid to fly free toward a dream, preferring to stay where it's safe. You might decide that you're not up to the trip through Sag-land at the moment, but at least acknowledge the part of you that yearns to go there.

Sagittarius also influences Saturn, forcing this often serious, rule-bound energy to look beyond the immediate territory to see out near the horizon and beyond. Sag can bring imagination, vision and a greater perspective to Saturn's usually structured, logical approach to life.

On the other hand, Saturn might just want to get the job done and isn't in the mood to wax philosophical about how many angels can dance on the head of a nail – it just wants to get the right nail for the job and move on to the next project.

In this case, Sagittarian energy could seem like it's annoyingly in the way of progress and results. You might find yourself irritated with people who want to put everything in an otherworldly spiritual context, when all you want to do is stay focused on what needs to be done in this world. If you keep tripping over Sagittarian-type people who annoy you, check to see if the spiritual part of you might be feeling

neglected or bored and schedule some time to reconnect with it.

Another way these two could combine is in regard to wisdom and understanding. Sagittarius is about inspired wisdom – principles, beliefs and ideals. Saturn is about a different kind of wisdom – that which is constructed out of experience, hard work and what we learn from making mistakes.

At their best, these two can forge a powerful alliance that can incorporate a higher standard of behaviour, action and integrity that is based on both principles and practicing what you preach. This is the most glowing horizon to aim for while Saturn is in Sag – learning how to talk the talk, walk the walk and focus a clearer understanding of what that is. This can bring a way to believe in the best you can be, as well as to accept that your human mistakes and imperfections are

part of the package and not grounds for condemnation.

On the other hand, if you think Sagittarius on a bad day can be judgmental, blaming and intolerant, wait until it joins forces with Saturn's critical, demanding and exacting side! This could be dogmatic, insistent on being right, and rigidly

Mistakes are human; to

learn, grow and evolve from them

divine.

cut-and-dried in terms of who/what it considers worthy. Perfection and the expectation that you "should" live up to it could become quite over the top.

This can manifest as a rigid "my way or the highway" attitude. However, a more positive version of this is to help you envision and define clearer boundaries about what you're prepared to tolerate (in the name of higher principles) versus what feels like it will stretch your personal integrity beyond acceptable limits.

After Saturn in Scorpio has pared you down to your more essential, authentic self, Saturn in Sagittarius challenges you to aim to be the very best of that self. It's not enough to simply be who you are; it's also important to aim to live up to the highest truth and integrity that you know.

Mistakes are human; to learn, grow and evolve from them divine.

Out of Bounds Planets

By Samantha Samuels

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.

Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away"

- Henry David Thoreau, Walden

II NN TT RR OO DD UU CC TT II OO NN Planets that are out of bounds have been documented to behave in an outstanding manner, such that the characteristics of the planet are especially well developed, extreme in functioning or in some cases contribute to abnormal behaviour in the domain of the planet. By definition, an OOB planet is one that exceeds 23 degrees 27 minutes either North or South of the equator. The more OOB planets a person has and the further declination each planet is, the more creative thinking they display and the more their interests, values and preferences differ from those prominent in the society in which they live.

On the positive side, OOB planets are visionary, inventive, inspirational, original and deeply cherish their freedom of thought and action, especially in the area governed by the planet. On the negative side, OOB planets can contribute to insanity, abnormal thoughts/ feelings and complete disregard for the law.

The Sun, Saturn and Neptune will never be OOB. Jupiter very rarely goes OOB and even then does not go too much past. The Moon will go OOB most frequently and reaches a maximum of nearly 29 degrees when the North Node is at 0 degrees Aries every 18.6 years. Mercury, Venus and

Mars are next in frequency and usually go to a maximum of 27 degrees but it should be noted that both Venus and Mars have on rare occasions gone to 28 degrees. Uranus and Pluto do not go much beyond 23 degrees 27 minutes and when they do they have generational effects. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of OOB planets by examining the effects they have on people who were born with them.

MM EE TT HH OO DD I created a sample of 165 famous people from the entertainment, science, literature, corporate and visual arts fields who have made commendable contributions to society. For comparison, I included 40 infamous people who had committed serious criminal acts (gruesome murderers and rapists) to show what is possible when the boundary breaking nature of an OOB planet goes in the wrong direction. The comparison is also made to provide evidence that OOB planets are neither inherently good nor bad, their special energy is used according to the level of consciousness of a person.

The use of well-known people rather than non-famous people is so that the general public is familiar with their life history (or can easily become familiar if desired) and are

Page 8: C a nadian s o a t i c u d l a c i g o ro fnoit cia IDEAS

THE NEWSLETTER OF THE CANADIAN ASSOCIATION FOR ASTROLOGICAL EDUCATION

8

able to see for themselves how the energy manifests in each case. It is important to note that having more OOB planets is not expected to incline one towards fame or infamy, to show this a sample of non-famous people is included. Each famous or infamous person is listed under each planet that they have out of bounds; some people are listed multiple times because they have multiple planets OOB. People who do not have any OOB planets are not listed at all. The non-famous people are not listed due to privacy reasons and because the general public is not familiar with their life history.

The birth charts were obtained from Solar Fire astrological software and Rodden's Astro Data Bank and had at least a B rating on Rodden's Rating Scale.

It must be remembered that when analyzing a natal chart, there are multiple factors to be considered and modification of aspects is influential. Although , this is only the case when all other planetary factors are equal. There are some notable extraneous circumstances to be kept in mind. For example someone with Venus at 24 degrees 10 minutes of a sign and features such as Venus closely conjunct an angle or Venus as an unaspected planet or having a stellium in the 2nd or 7th houses (Venus's houses) may display more prominence of Venusian traits than another person with Venus at 24 degrees 50 minutes but Venus does not possess any of the aforementioned features. This is the reason why a perfect linear link between progressively higher declinations and strength of expression of an OOB planet is not expected.

RR EE SS UU LL TT SS Out of 205 people, 111 (54.1%) have at least one out of bounds planet, 37 (18.0%) have exactly two OOB planets, 6 (3.0%) have exactly three OOB planets and 2 (1.0%) have exactly four OOB planets.

Famous: Out of 165 people, 91 (55.2%) have at least one

out of bounds planet, 29 (17.6%) have exactly two OOB planets, 5 (3.0%) have exactly three OOB planets and 1 (0.006%) has exactly four OOB planets

Criminals: Out of 40 people, 20 (50%) have at least one out of bounds planet, 8 (20%) have exactly two OOB planets, 1 (2.5%) has exactly three OOB planets and 1 (2.5%) has exactly four OOB planets.

Non Famous: Out of 40 people, 22 (55%) have at least one out of bounds planet, 7 (17.5%) have exactly two OOB planets, 1 (2.5%) has exactly three OOB planets and 0 have exactly four OOB planets.

In this sample, there was no one with Jupiter out of bounds, therefore there will not be a discussion on its manifestation.

The percentages are very similar in the famous, non-famous and infamous populations suggesting that OOB planets are neither inherently good or bad, confirming that their special energy will be used according to the level of consciousness of any given person.

As expected there is not a perfectly linear link between progressively higher declinations and more extreme manifestations of any given OOB planet. However with all else being equal, the general relationship does show that higher declinations are associated with more extreme manifestations of energy.

President’s Message by Joan Ann Evelyn

March 1, 2015

The Certificate and Graduation Party held on March 1 at Janet Markham’s home was a tremendous success. Six people, including students and teachers, from Ontario, received CAAE Diplomas. The graduates were Lina Grosso, Jim Schaefer, Gabriele Schwarz and Dianne Stathopoulas. They completed three levels of Astrology Classes and finished six Elective Courses. Brian Trussler and your truly were grandfathered in, due to our long involvement with CAAE. Kate Preston, CAAE’s Registrar, prepared forty-five certificates. Forty-one were given to students in Ontario and four were sent to British Columbia.

The most important item on the AGM Agenda was the election of a Treasurer. Lisa Evelyn was elected Treasurer. Lisa has been a full cycle bookkeeper/accountant since 2005. She owns her own business White Picket Fence Accounting and Taxation Services. Her goal is to help businesses meet their financial needs and obligations. This is her fourth year running the Income Tax Clinic at Centennial College in partnership with the School of Business and the Student Association (CCAAI). She is in her third year at Centennial College working towards a diploma in Accounting. She is looking forward to bringing her experience and knowledge to the CAAE as Treasurer.

The other elected board positions stay in place: Joan Ann Evelyn, President. Shannon Cunningham, Vice President and Milada Sakic, Secretary. We welcome Lisa as a new member of the team.

The Appointed Positions are: Kate Preston, Register, Alison Price, Board Consultant (Vancouver) and Janet Markham, Educational Consultant. We are delighted that Don Keith has rejoined the board. He will work as a CAAE Board Consultant in Ontario.

We welcome new teachers Lina Grosso and Samantha Samuels. Lina is a CAAE graduate and Samantha teaches Vedic Astrology and Numerology. We would also like to welcome new member Wendy Guy.

The exam date this year will be May 2. The location and time for the Level One and Math Exams will be announced. The Level Two and Three Exams will be emailed out on May 2 and should be returned by May 18

(the end of the long weekend). Exam information is published elsewhere in this newsletter.

The website continues to be a work in progress. But thanks to Reagan designing the final product and Alison communicating with the website company, most of our problems have been ironed out. Special thanks to Alison for training board members how to use the new website.

Alison will also take over as newsletter editor and the board wishes her great success.

Be sure to like us on Facebook.

We started 2015 in a much stronger position. Our goals this year are:

To continue to improve the diploma program and develop curriculums and study guides for all Elective Courses.

To create a Course Evaluation Form for all classes.

We would welcome a Marketing Person on the board to come up with new promotional ideas.

The recent improvements to the website have helped tremendously. Students continue to join. Our goal is to develop CAAE into a Canada Wide Organization and this is happening slowly. Many of our teacher’s hold SKYPE classes. Right now, your President is teaching students in Oshawa, Halifax, Perth and Edmonton.

The recent improvements to the website have helped tremendously. Students continue to join CAAE and pay their memberships on-line.

Special thanks to all board members whose contributions made 2014 a successful year.

We will move forward with new enthusiasm to accomplish CAAE’s goals in 2015 and we ask for your support.

Joan Ann Evelyn

Ask An Astrologer A client asks: “What was happening in my chart when the sewer

backed up in my basement?”

When my client went into the basement, the clear water came up to her knees. It took a while to realize she was experiencing a sewer back-up problem. She had a finished basement and everything was ruined. She even lost some antique furniture she had inherited from her Mother.

There was a great deal going on in her chart that day. Her birth Saturn is in Libra, Pluto in the sky was in Capricorn, her birth Uranus is in Cancer and Uranus in the sky in Aries formed a Cardinal Grand Cross. Her progressed Moon in Cancer was also a part of the Grand Cross. The Grand Cross involved her 1st, 4th, 6th and 10th houses.

Saturn rules the 4th house of her home. On the same day, Venus (Venus ruler of her 8th house of insurance) conjuncted Neptune and Neptune opposed her Progressed Midheaven. When she discovered the flood in her basement, the Ascendant for the Flood Chart conjuncted Uranus to the exact degree and Mars in the sky conjuncted her Progressed Sun.

The transits, that day, ensured that her life could not remain the same. Thank goodness she had sewer backup insurance.

Book Review Venus Signs – Discover Your Erotic Gifts and Secret

Desires Through Astrology by Jessica Shepherd

Book review by Alison Price

This book is about how your Venus placement will express itself through your chart and it is an easy read. There is much thought given to the many facets of Venus which is refreshing.

Venus in your chart is not typically a difficult planet and can be often ignored in favor of understanding more demanding planets like Saturn or Pluto.

Shepherd has brought each Venus sign placement to life and we can all benefit from a more rounded understanding of the brightest planet in the sky. I found my personal Venus in sign beautifully expressed which brought me another dimension to understand this much loved planet.

This is the type of book that you may not read from cover to cover but dip into as and when you need more understanding of the twelve possible Venus sign placements.

My copy was a PDF eBook suitable for an iPad or iPhone. The pages are clearly formatted and it is easy to read.

It is a beginner’s book and could be understood by all. There is a handy list of the Venus placements in the back although if you are over 65 you can't get your Venus sign here and you will have to search elsewhere.

I recommend it as a Venus specific book for your astrological bookshelf.

Graduation Presentation Address by the President at the AGM on March 1, 2015

Winston Churchill said: “The further back I look, the further ahead I can see.”

Astrology had been an interest of mine since I was a teenager, but it actually came into my consciousness with a bang in 1976. I was feeling depressed for no valid reason. Materially, everything was great. I had a great customer service job at General Motors, a comfortable place to live, owned a ski chalet in Collingwood and travelled on a regular basis, but could not shake the feeling “is this all there is”? Around the same time, I read in the Horoscope Column of the Toronto Star: that usually sunny Leos were feeling the blues as the planet Saturn moved into their sign. So, instead of going to the Doctor for an antidepressant, I enrolled in an Astrology Class. It was a short six week class. I could not go any further, since the teacher moved out of Oshawa. In the early ‘90’s, that feeling of depression came back. By now, Saturn was opposing my Sun. It was time to leave my job at General Motors. I had to tell the company I would take an early retirement on February 15 that year. A month later, my sister brought home a Learning Annex Calendar and I learned about Robin Armstrong’s Astrology Classes. I enrolled in his beginner class and from that very first class I knew what my future would be. When I started to learn Astrology and began working on an Astrology Database, I was joyous, the depression totally went away. I

learned that Leos must have an outlet for their creative expression. Once I completed Robin’s classes, I wrote the CAAE Level 1 Exam and passed. I then took the CAAE Level 2 class and wrote and passed the exam. I went on receive certification for the Level 3 class. I also took some elective courses. I knew I could not do anything seven days a week and not get paid for it, therefore I had to work as an Astrologer. I started out doing birth charts. It took about two years before I began doing transit charts. A group of Actuaries in the United States said that being an Astrologer was one of the ten best jobs in world. I find working with clients totally satisfying. Astrology is not for the faint of heart. I am glad that I did not know the long road that lay ahead when I first started studying it. Following certification, I started to teach the three levels of Astrology at Durham College. That lasted for six years until Durham College started the university. Once UOIT was up and running, the college no long offered special interest courses. Once that window of opportunity was closed, I began to teach at home. It is wonderful in the winter not to have to go out. From the early years, clients booked sessions. I either met them at networking groups or they came by referral or found me on the internet. It has been an amazing journey “this road less travelled”. I started out as Secretary on the CAAE Board and had no desire to be President. But my term as President

has been an incredible learning experience. I have become a much better teacher since serving as President. Since the Fall, I have been teaching by SKYPE and that too has been a great experience. I want to thank all the board members that make the CAAE possible. It takes a whole lot of different talents to make it all work. We are all at different levels of development. And even though Astrology can be challenging subject at times, at least we have a pretty good idea of what is going on in our own lives. I really appreciate the board’s decision to grant me a diploma since I do not plan to stop doing Astrology anytime soon. I wish you every success on your Astrological Journey.
