BYU Hawaii Curriculum Proposal Number [10-19 v1]

Section 2 – Overview (Support)

Summary: This proposal changes the status of one class (HTM 270) from optional to required for HTM majors. It also expands the number of options in the HTM finance track and the HTM marketing track. The proposal increases the total required credit hours to 64 (including 6 GE credits).

The change in the status of HTM 270 is desirable because the focus of this class, convention and destination marketing and promotion, has become increasingly important in the tourism industry of our target area. The change will also help to even out faculty class loads and meet the “traction” goals of the administration.

The addition of ACCT 301 and ACCT 302 to the HTM finance track options is precipitated by a request from the Marriott Corp. to produce HTM graduates that have completed the intermediate Accounting series.

BUSM 422 is added to the HTM marketing track. It is a newly created marketing class.

Hospitality and Tourism Management

The program applies the general principles of the business, management, and advanced managementcores to a specific industry. Close ties with the Polynesian Cultural Center provide students in thisprogram with a unique opportunity to study and analyze one of the most successful touristdestinations in the world. To earn a bachelors degree, students complete a departmental mini-core,then pursue a program track in either Hospitality Management or Tourism Management.

The department also offers a minor designed to allow students in other School of Business majors andin other disciplines across campus to explore an industry where their skills and interests might be wellutilized.

All Hospitality and Tourism majors are required to complete an internship or other practicum of 1-12credit hours. An internship will provide "real world" experience that will augment the student's majorcourse studies and will enhance the student's career opportunities.
