Byron Bay Public School acknowledges and pays respect to the Arakwal people of the Bunjalung Nation, the traditional custodians of the land upon which the school proudly stands.
Young Leaders Day I was fortunate enough to attend the Young Leaders Day in Brisbane on Friday with our SRC executive, Captains and Vice Captains, Year 5 SRC representatives and Miss Stanton-Gillan. Please read the article in this newsletter written by Eden and Molly. I was particularly proud of the students not only for their exemplary behaviour but also for the positive attitude and ability to listen closely and come away with some important messages from very inspiring speakers. All of these students were excellent ambassadors for our school.
Student Safety Student safety after leaving school grounds is paramount. Last week’s newsletter contained information reminding parents about being safe when collecting their children from school. Concerns from parents and staff continue to come to my attention, so I have included a separate note about safety tips for Drop-off and Pick-up zones. Please read this and help us to keep our students safe. It is everyone’s responsibility to follow the street signage and abide by them. Here at school, Road Safety is part of the school curriculum and during the year all students will be taught lessons on Road Safety. Please role model correct road safety behaviour so that your child learns through a combination of school and home experiences. For more information on Road Safety please go to Transport for NSW website https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/schools/backtoschoolsafety.html.
Working With Students Yesterday, I worked with 3 year 6 girls on the mathematical concept of long division. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Camilla, Eden and Molly and look forward to seeing how they apply this knowledge to more complex problem solving. Thank you for being such motivated students. Visible Learning Goal setting is an important part of developing skills and knowledge and having success. Each of the speakers at the Young Leaders Day on Friday had set goals along their journey to success and overcoming challenges. All students here at BBPS have been asked to set a reading, writing and numeracy goal. Please speak to your child about their goals and maybe set a goal for home.
Building Update A letter was emailed to all families yesterday regarding the removal of soil from the building site of our new classrooms. This work is due to commence today, Wednesday 6 March and continuing through to Monday 11 March. All soil removal works will be carried out outside of school operational hours.
Have a great week everyone, Natalie Lennon Relieving Principal

Growth Mindset Last year Byron Bay Public School Community were introduced to the idea of a GROWTH MINDSET. This year we will continue to work with the students and parents in understanding why having a positive mindset is important. Our focus in class for the next 5 weeks is the ‘LEARNING PIT’. The Learning Pit is a place that we all go when we are learning a new concept. It is the strategies that we use to ‘get out of the pit’ that allow us to achieve new learning. The lifelong skills of determination and persistence will be a focus. Strategies that the students will be taught include self-talk, helping us to work out what to do when we are faced with a challenge and why going into the pit is essential. It would be great if you could have a discussion with your child/ren about the ‘Learning Pit’.
*What is the Learning Pit?
*How do you get in?
*What sort of things can you do to get out? For more information about the ‘Learning Pit’ watch this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwsmicqjyFg Growth Mindset Committee Michelle Spry AP St2
Band News Thank you to the Parents who attended our first Band Meeting for the year. For those students new to the Instrumental Program, Bunyip Band will begin in Term 2. This gives new students an opportunity to settle into lessons before starting in the Band. If you sent back an expression of interest to the school, to be part of the Instrumental Program this year, the next step is to contact the Conservatorium in Lismore. Currently most spots on the tutors’ timetables are full, however the Conservatorium does have a waiting list. (Northern Rivers Conservatorium, 152 Keen St Lismore NSW 2480, www.nrcac.edu.au Ph: 02 6621 2266 | Fax: 02 6622 0244) I heard Senior Band playing ‘Advance Australia Fair’ last Thursday morning and it sounded great, numbers had also increased to 15. Cameron commented that Wilderband were also in fine form on Wednesday morning. Don't forget to claim the $100 Creative Kids voucher, if you haven't done so already. For more information regarding the Creative Kids program, or to claim your voucher, visit service.nsw.gov.au Due to soil removal from the school, Senior Band will commence at 8.15am on Thursday morning for this week only. Have an enjoyable week, Cheryl The online ordering system (Flexischools) experienced a technical issue again last Friday which resulted in a number of families being unable to place an online order. Unfortunately however, as with any technology, problems do on occasion occur. If for any reason you are having problems with placing an online order, please contact Flexischools directly on 1300 361 769. If you are unable to place your order or get through to Flexischools by phone, please either provide a lunch from home or you are welcome to fill in a handwritten lunch order bag the "old fashion" way (cut off is 9:15am). As we have limited cash on-site, if at all possible please send in either the cor-rect amount or small notes. Most online issues occur in the morning peak period and generally on a Friday when there is high demand, therefore Mandy and Jodie (canteen) highly recommend placing online lunch orders the night before. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

SRC Young Leaders Day On Friday the 1st of March, all the Stage 3 SRC, SRC executive, Captains and Vice Captains attended the Brisbane Convention Centre for National Young Leaders Day. We all had a great time listening to inspiring speeches from Cate Campbell, Matt Cosgrove, Tim Diamond and John Coutis. They each had their own amazing stories to tell. We all learnt new leadership skills and made some new friends. We played some fun games and met new people. Some of us were lucky enough to meet the speakers and get autographs and photos. Each and every one of us have taken something away from this trip and are ready to be leaders and face the world. Edie & Molly 6C
Staff Car Parking Thank you to all the parents and community members who contacted a Byron Bay Councillor last week and for your support in this matter. Unfortunately, the council have voted to implement a paid Interim Parking Permit to the timed zones in Kingsley Street. Staff will either have to purchase an e-parking permit ($55 residents, $110 non-resident) per car to receive an Interim Parking Permit or purchase an Interim Parking Permit for the same price as an e-parking permit.
Selective High School Placement Test Information for Year 7 Selective High School Placement for 2020 is now available. Information about the process is available from our school office.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) This week’s focus is once again about using toilets appropriately.
