The School provides a unique learning environment based on high expectations where like our motto, we are constantly Aspiring to Achieve. We are proud to offer an all-round education that promotes student achievement in all areas, including academic, cultural, creative, philosophical, environmental, technological and sporting pursuits. We are continuing to focus on the more traditional three Rs – reading, writing and arithmetic. In 2018, the four Cs have become equally important with creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration coming to the fore as we equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need as 21st century learners. Visible learning, growth mindset and STEM education are key initiatives in our 2018-20 School Plan. Our robotics and coding programs are the envy of many schools. I would like to acknowledge the tremendous support we receive from our parent community, we are fortunate to have parents who are interested in school affairs and supportive of our endeavours. You help to make our school the great place that it is. I would also like to acknowledge our teachers professionalism, hard work and commitment to student learning. They are working hard to inspire our young children to create a world that they can be proud of. Our students of today, will eventually become the leaders of tomorrow, the leaders of our future world. They might be leaders in their field, leaders in the community, leaders in family matters or a good role model for friends, family and future generations. Education Week is a time to celebrate the high quality of teaching and learning that is occurring every day in our classrooms. We have an outstanding reputation for good work, good behaviour and wearing our school uniform with pride. A BIG thank you to the parents, carers, grandparents and friends who came into our open classrooms on Monday afternoon. The students were very excited about your visit and thoroughly enjoyed having you at school with them. School Donations: Building A Better Foundation The school has established two tax deductible funds to enable parents, relatives and friends the opportunity to make donations. The Building Fund has provided financial support to complete our school hall renovations, install reverse cycle air-conditioning units in every classroom and construct classroom computer centres. During the next three years, the Building Fund will be used to improve playground facilities. The Library Fund has provided reading materials for guided reading, home read- ing and the Reading Eggs technology program. This fund will continue to expand reading resources and technology for literacy learning. You can visit our website to download and complete a donor card. Your support is sincerely appreciated. Education Week This week we are celebrating Education Week which provides us with the opportunity to acknowledge the great work being done by our whole school community, including the teachers, support staff, office staff, parents and volunteers. The theme for this year’s Education Week is ‘Todays schools – creating tomorrow’s world.’ Together, we are creating the future. We are celebrating the immense impact of public education and Byron Bay Public School’s commitment to futures focused, quality teaching and learning, student wellbeing, leadership and creating stronger ties with our community, which are the centre pieces of our 2018-20 School Plan.

Students are at the centre of our decision making, we believe in excellence, opportunity and success. The School provides a unique learning environment based on high expectations where like our motto, we are constantly ‘Aspiring to Achieve.’ We are proud to offer an all-round education that promotes student achievement in all areas, including academic, cultural, creative, philosophical, environmental, technological and sporting pursuits. Visible learning, growth mindset and STEM education are key initiatives in our 2018-20 School Plan.

Thanks to our wonderful P&C and their contributions to fundraising, all classes have access to a range of technology that supports teaching and learning and further engages our students.

Infants Athletics Fun Day Congratulations to everyone involved in the Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 Athletics Fun Day activities. The students enjoyed competing and learning about running events, demonstrating considerable skill and talent on the day. Thank you to the organisers, also to the parents for coming along and supporting the boys and girls, and to the students for their sportsmanship.

Staff Car Parking Dilemma Last week Byron Shire Council notified us that we would no longer receive parking permits which enable staff to park in the 2hr and 4 hr zones around the school. They have instructed us to abide by the 2hr and 4hr parking restrictions, which is impossible for us as we cannot leave students unattended in class. They have previously offered us free parking in Butler Street, but this is too far away and staff would be unable to carry teaching resources that far. They are now insisting that we pay an additional $110 to park in timed parking areas around the school. All staff are already paying to park in metred parking areas, with residents paying $55 and nonlocals paying $110. This has been brought upon us by Council at very short notice at a time when parking is going to be at a premium with the new buildings proposed start by the end of the month. The Councils new system means that staff who do not live in Byron will be paying $220 a year to park outside school.

I’ve been told that when Council were trying to introduce paid parking into Byron Bay, to get community onside we were used as the sweetener in the deal. This is obviously not the case now. Staff are not happy about being slogged another $110 to park outside school. If you feel the same, please contact the Council and let them know.

P&C Meeting Tomorrow Our next P&C Meeting will be held tomorrow evening, Thursday 9 August in the staffroom. The P&C are keen to commence planning for 2019 and beyond and will be working on a strategic plan over the next few months. Everyone is welcome to attend the P&C’s meetings and we would love to see some new faces. Child minding is available, please contact the school office if this is required.

Band Committee Meeting Our next meeting is at 3.30pm this Thursday 9 August, in the band room. I encourage all Band Committee members and interested parties to attend.

School Uniform – Jumpers Whilst it is fantastic to see the majority of our students in full school uniform every day, there remains some students who need reminding to wear the appropriate coloured jumper and shorts. It would be greatly appreciated if parents could support the school in ensuring that all of our students wear full school uniform every day. Black shorts and jumpers are not part of our school uniform. The school jumper colour is navy blue and the colour options for shorts, tights and long pants are navy blue or grey. The NSW PSSA jumpers can be worn on Fridays only. Thank you for your continued support in this matter. Until next time, Mrs Linda Trigg Principal

P&C Place Monthly Meeting Change of Date The next P&C monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, 9 August. Child minding available. Please contact the school office. All welcome.

SRC Fundraiser for Farmers! Our SRC met last Monday and decided that BBPS would like to contribute to Rural Aid's 'Buy a Bale' Campaign, to help our farmers and their families, suffering in the drought. Tomorrow, Thursday 9 August, there will be a feeder trough located under the 'Hat Tree' from 8.30am - 9.20am. All students are encouraged to bring in money to place in the trough. All money collected from the feeding trough will be counted and donated to 'Buy a Bale'.

As well as the feeding trough on Thursday morning, there are two other initiatives running from Monday 6 - Friday 10 August (this week). Families wishing to donate larger amounts of money can do so via the 'Buy a Bale' box in the front office. Students who purchase from the canteen and receive change will have the option of donating loose coins at the canteen collection point.

We are aiming to raise $1000 to purchase 10 large bales of hay and have them transported where they're needed most. The SRC have promised to match the total donation amount raised by students, to double our donation. Please dig deep to help us support our farmers. We look forward to giving you an update on our donation success, in next week's newsletter. Thanks in advance for your generosity towards this good cause.

Drama Workshops The Bangalow Music Festival has offered our school a number of drama workshops for students. The workshops are run by Cirque de Soleil performer Clint Bolster and expert in children's education Bethany Simons, who are both part of the Homunculus Theatre Company. All workshops are free and will be held in our school hall over Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 August. Six of our classes will be attending the workshops: 5W, 4PV, 3/4S, 3M, 3D and 1G.

Arts Extravaganza The Arts Extravaganza provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents of our students. The second Arts Extravaganza will be held in Week 10, the final week of the term. Classes participating are 4PV, 2T, 6S, 1G, 3D, 2W, 2V, 5I, 4P and 5W. The Wilderband and Bunyip Band, together with Year 2, Stage 2 and 3 and choirs will also be performing.

Tech rehearsal will be held on Wednesday 19 September, with the dress rehearsal on Friday 21 September. The evening performance will be on Wednesday 26 September. Auditions for ‘filler items’ will be in Week 5, with Stage 3 on Tuesday, Stage 2 on Wednesday and Stage 1 on Thursday. All talented students are encouraged to audition for ‘filler items’. These acts are performed in front of the house curtain, in between the main class acts. Students can play an instrument, mime, dance, perform comedy skits or do magic acts. Students will need to bring their music on a USB to the auditions. All performances should be entertaining and appropriate to the auditions. Successful students will be notified in Week 6.
