What???It is called Universal Solvent because

water can dissolve many substances once mixed.

Real World Example #1Using Kool-Aid mixtures with water is a

quick way to make Kool-Aid because the water is able to dissolve the mixture into a flavored water because it is the universal solvent.

Real World Example #2Lime is dissolved in the waterfall Havasu

and makes the water turquoise.

Definition/Example

DIFINITION: The ability or tendency to float in water of other fluids.

EXAMPLES: ice cubes in water, boats float on ride on water, helium balloons are an example of buoyancy in the air.

SPECIFIC HEAT

DEFINITION OF SPECIFIC HEATThe number of degrees required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1°C.

SPECIFIC HEAT RELATED TO WATER

Water has a high specific heat, which means it takes a lot of energy to heat water.

An abundance of energy allows for water molecules to move faster and become a vapor that is released in the air.

EXAMPLESOne example of specific heat is a pan on a

stove top. Metal pans have a low specific heat because they warm quickly from the heat of the stove. This property makes the metal pan ideal for cooking.

Another example is the specific heat of water. Water is used to cool down machinery because it has a high specific heat and needs an abundance of energy to become hot.

DENSITY

Information Definition- The amount of mass per unit

of volume. Things that float on water are less dense

than water Water has a density of 1 g/ml

Polarity of Water

Definition of polarity of water

Definition: The uneven distribution of charges across a molecule.

Responsible for attraction to other polar molecules.

Water does not attract non-polar substances; such as oil.

Examples of Polarity of water

Surface tension- the tightness across the surface of water.

Cohesion-the act of uniting or sticking together with other water molecules.

Surface Tension

-The tightness across the surface of the water that is caused by the polar molecules pulling on each

other.

Real world

Water tension is the reason insects are able to walk across the water.

It is also the reason that raindrops to form round beads when they fall onto a windshield.
